No incident, no one hurt Made May 12, 2026, sent to the company May 15, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 1, 2026
The product, in the report: SCAG Liberty Z 42-inch zero-turn riding lawn mower used for residential lawn mowing. Model SZL-42H-22-KT. The mower is equipped with a 42-inch cutting deck and Kohler gasoline engine. Color is primarily orange and black. Product includes a plastic fuel tank with fuel shutoff valve and rubber mounting bushing. The mower was purchased new on 06-14-2024 for residential use. The reported incident involved the fuel shutoff valve and bushing pulling out of the fuel tank during operation, causing gasoline to leak and splash near the hot engine.
I am reporting a safety incident involving my SCAG Liberty Z 42-inch zero-turn mower, model SZL-42H-22-KT, serial number 1000592, equipped with engine serial number 5304404793.
On a hot and windy day while mowing a residential lawn under normal operating conditions, the fuel shutoff valve and rubber bushing unexpectedly pulled out of the fuel tank while the mower was in operation. The fuel tank was full at the time of the incident, causing gasoline to splash and leak out of the tank near the hot engine and exhaust components.
I was the operator and was using the mower as intended for residential grass mowing. The sudden fuel leak created a serious fire and safety hazard because gasoline was spraying and splashing onto and around a hot running engine during windy conditions. There was significant risk of ignition, fire, burns, or explosion.
No physical injuries occurred, but the defect presented a serious consumer safety concern. The mower had been purchased on 06-14-2024 from Empire Seed Turf and Irrigation and was being operated normally at the time of the incident. I believe the fuel tank connection, shutoff valve mounting, or retaining bushing may be defective and could present a fire hazard to other consumers.

No one hurt Made May 4, 2023, sent to the company May 9, 2023, published by CPSC May 30, 2023
The product, in the report: Scag Cheetah 61 inch zero turn commercial lawn mower.
On May 17, 2019, I purchased a new Scag Cheetah zero turn lawn mower and bagging system from J.M. Hayden’s Power Equipment in Newfields NH. for $14,295.00 This mower is used by me only for residential use at my home. On Saturday 11-19-22 while doing light mowing for approximately 15 minutes, my mower caught fire and is a total loss. This mower had less than 100 hours use and was recently serviced for a warrantied engine repair. I am fortunate that this incident did not result in any personal injury and or property damage. Myself and my attorney have contacted Scag with letters, pictures and the fire dept report. We have received no reply to date.

The product, in the report: Scag Tiger Cat 61”
Imagine having a $10,000 machine go up in flames immediately following a full service and quality check by your certified dealer. Worse yet, imagine having a family member on that machine when it burst into flames.
This happened to us. Our Tiger Cat was just serviced at [REDACTED]. The fire department ruled the fire a mechanical malfunction. Neither [REDACTED] nor Scag will take any responsibility for this failure. We are all very fortunate that my wife was not injured or killed.
Neither [REDACTED] nor Scag will stand by their equipment and service.
Shameful and dishonest. Save yourself and perhaps a family member and avoid [REDACTED] and Scag. It’s not worth losing your life or that of a loved one.

The product, in the report: Scag wildcat mower
Caller was cutting grass and noticed there was a flame in the grass area he just cut. Caller noticed flames coming from the engine which is located behind him while he is riding the mower. Caller hopped off the mower and after a few seconds the whole mover was engulfed in flames. Caller contacted the fire department who had to put the flames out. Caller believes this product is a fire hazard. No injuries.
*Caller has had to repair the crankshaft seal twice which was the cause of oil leaks.

The product, in the report: SCAG 61” TIGER CAT RIDING ZERO TURN MOWER
I OWN A SCAG TIGER CAT RIDING MOWER. I HAS DEVELOPED NUMEROUS LEAKS IN THE LEFT SIDE MOLDED PLASTIC GAS TANK. THE RIGHT SIDE TANK IS OF A DIFFERENT MOLD AND IS FINE. THE TANK, IN MY OPINION, WAS MADE OF FAULTY PLASTIC OR A FAULTY MOLDING PROCESS. THERE ARE SMALL PINHOLE LEAKS AND SEEPS IN THE TANK , ESPECIALLY AT THE SEAM THAT ATTACHES THE TOP AND BOTTOM HALVES OF TANK. IT IS A FIRE HAZARD. I ONLY USE THE NON LEAKING RIGHT SIDE TANK NOW. IF YOU LOOK INSIDE THE EMPTY TANK YOU CAN SEE PLACES WHERE THE PLASTIC IS NO LONGER PROPER. THE INNER PLASTIC IS FAILING AND AND ALLOWING THE OUTER PLASTIC TO DEVELOP LEAKS AND SEEPS.
I CONTACTED OEM AND HE SAYS NO RECALL ON THIS ITEM AND SUGGESTED I CONTACT THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM. I HAVE DONE OTHER AND THEY SAY THEY WILL NOT REPLACE THE TANK.
