The product, in the report: Troybilt Pony 42 (42” riding lawn mower/tractor)
Re: Troybilt Pony 42” riding lawn mower purchased from Home Depot. Mower is equipped with only a single clutch-brake pedal (not two separate drive/gas and brake pedals). When mower is in motion it remains in motion until the clutch-brake pedal is depressed - similar to cruise control on an automobile. If the clutch-brake pedal become obstructed, is caught on an object, or if for any other reason the operator cannot depress the clutch-brake pedal, the machine will remain in motion with blades engaged. This situation occurred on 7/21/20 when the clutch-brake became entangled in a child’s swing, which prevented the clutch-brake pedal from being engaged to stop the machine. As a result, the machine continued in forward motion while entangled in the swing chain, raising the front end of the mower off the ground, spinning the mower 90 degrees left and crashing the mower into the swing set frame and finally a tree which was sufficient to stop the mower until it could be turned off. If the mower had the ‘normal’ configuration of two separate drive and brake pedals, the operator could have simply removed their foot from the drive pedal and the machine would have stopped without the need to engage the brake. In the dual pedal configuration, the operator must actively and continuously engage the drive pedal for the machine to move. Without such engagement, the machine automatically comes to a stop. In the case of the Troybuilt Pony 42” the opposite is the case - the machine will by default move forward (or reverse) at the ‘cruise’ speed setting until the clutch-brake is engaged. Of secondary concern, there have been several prior instances where the clutch-brake engages rapidly, particularly at higher speed settings, causing the mower to lurch forward. In other cases, the clutch-brake does not engage. In my opinion as an engineer and safety professional in the construction industry for more than 30 years, this is a potentially dangerous product.
