The product, in the report: riding lawn mower

The consumer used the unit to mow his lawn and the leaves. After approximately 15 minutes of use, the consumer noticed smoke emitting from the front of the unit, near the hood. The consumer assumed it was an issue with the belt because it has been replaced every year. The consumer got off the unit. As he opened the hood flames went up about 6 ft. high. The consumer indicated that the leaves and grass nearby caught fire. The consumer indicated that the unit is almost completely burned and not operable. The consumer believes the leaves or grass that were underneath the unit caught fire and caused the gas tank to melt. The consumer indicated that the gas tank was full.

The consumer used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

The consumer has read multiple reports online of similar incidents.

The consumer contacted the firm to inform them about the safety hazard and the incident. The consumer was told that they could not assist because they already warn consumers about this hazard in the manual. The consumer has now realized a statement in the manual that warns about grass, leaves or debris under the unit causing a fire hazard. The consumer does not understand how a product that is meant to mow a lawn would have such warning.
