  1. No one hurt

Made May 7, 2012, sent to the company Jun 4, 2012, published by CPSC Jun 18, 2012

The product, in the report: Riding lawn mower

The consumer stated that last fall he stored his riding lawn mower, with a full tank of gas. The consumer stated that on 4/16/2012 he went to turn it on and the motor would not move. After several tries the consumer used jumper cables to connect it to the lawn mowers battery, to boost battery power on the lawn mower. The consumer stated that while using the jumper cables the wires that connect to the starter of the lawn mowers motor were burning hot and were emitting smoke. The consumer stopped and let the motor cool for approximately 15 minutes. The consumer stated that he tried it again and used the jumper cables to try to turn on the motor. He stated that it would turn but it was still not working properly. After several tries by using the jumper cables the motor started to turn over. After a few more tries it started to run. However at a low speed and running real rough. It emitted a big cloud of smoke.

The consumer stated that the motor was running and emitting smoke. The consumer came out from the shed where he kept the mower because he could not see with all the smoke. The consumer stated that he left the motor running for approximately 5-7 minutes and smoke was coming out of the shed. He stated that after these 5-7 minutes the motor started to function properly and the smoke dissipated rapidly.

The consumer unhooked the jumper cables of the mower and left the mower running for approximately 3-4 minutes. He stated that he walked back in the shed and he took the mower out and cut the entire yard that approximately took 45 minutes.

The consumer stated that the lawn mower ran out of gas after using the lawn mower. He stated that it is unusual, because it usually does not take that a whole tank. The consumer stated that he went to fill the gas tank, when he opened the hood in the front he realized that there was gas all over the bottom area of the motor and the bottom frame. The tank holds 1.5 gal.

The consumer stated that he filled the gas tank, turned it on for approximately 1-2 minutes to make sure it was running properly. The consumer stated that he sprayed off a mixture of soap to the areas that were covered with gasoline and oil. He washed the lawn mower to remove all of the gasoline and oil.

The consumer let the mower sit for a couple of days and on 05/04/2012 he turned on the lawn mower and the motor would not turn. The consumer stated that he looked inside and the gas tank was down to a quart of gasoline left inside. The consumer stated that the gas tank was leaking and he was unsure from where or where it was going.

The consumer unscrewed the spark plug and over a quart of gasoline pour over the engine and the ground. The consumer stated that he tried to turn on the engine and it sprayed gas everywhere out of the spark plug hole.

The consumer stated that after analyzing the lawn mower the consumer realized that gasoline was leaking into the engine. The consumer stated that he unplugged the plug from the oil tank and at least 2 quarts of oil and gas mixture was released into an oil pan that the consumer placed underneath the mower.

If the spark plug wire was close enough to the lawn mower frame or any metal to cause a spark, it would of cause a massive fire or explosion. The consumer believes that this matter should be investigated. The carburetor float valve was stuck “open”.
