The product, in the report: Riding lawn mower
I was mowing my lawn with my John Deere S170 for about 10 mins, when I heard a loud pop at the same time as the engine died. I immediately saw wispy smoke exiting from the back right side of the hood. Immediately after jumping off the lawn tractor, I lifted the hood which was already on fire and melting from a fire by the cables at the back right side of the hood. I ran to grab a bucket and thankfully my wife was also home. It took three 5 gallon buckets to extinguish. There was no smell of fuel. It was an obviously electrical fire and very thankfully no one got hurt.

The product, in the report: John Deere D105 lawn tractor
I was cutting my grass and the transmission broke causing me to lose brakes and the tractor was freewheeling sending me into the woods. I turned to avoid getting impaled on tree branches and the tractor rolled over pinning my leg under it. This was a transmission that was replaced due to a recall that was in cooperation between John Deere and the consumer product safety commission. The letter that I received said that the tractor may lose drive, service brake and parking brake which could result in a crash causing injury or death. This is exactly what happened even though the transmission was replaced by the dealer. This was a D105 John Deere lawn tractor.

The product, in the report: Z325E ZTrack 54 inch 24 HP v twin gas zero turn rising mower, plus accessories.
Product: John Deere Riding Lawn Mower Model: Z325Eztrack mower Serial Number: 1GX325EHLRS101031 Date of Incident: November 8, 2025
Description of Incident: The John Deere riding mower caught fire during normal use. The fire originated from the mower while operating under typical residential conditions. This presents a serious safety hazard with risk of injury, property damage, or worse.
Following the incident, I contacted John Deere. I was instructed to take the mower to an authorized dealer, [REDACTED], for inspection.
However, the dealer has stated that John Deere corporate instructed them NOT to inspect or service the mower because it must be handled by a John Deere fire investigation team.
As of today, the mower has remained at the dealer for over 30 days without inspection. Multiple follow-ups by both the dealer and myself have not resulted in any action or timeline from John Deeres claims department. No direct phone contact has been provided, and communication has been limited to unanswered or delayed emails.
Safety Concern:
Fire occurred during normal operation Manufacturer has delayed inspection of a fire-related incident Dealer is prevented from taking action Potential risk to other consumers if defect exists
Requested Action:
Immediate investigation into the fire incident Review of potential product defect or safety issue Assistance in prompting manufacturer response
This delay in addressing a fire-related hazard raises serious consumer safety concerns.

The product, in the report: Lawn tractor
Caller is reporting that the riding Lawn tractor caught fire, while it was running idle, and the flames damaged the engine compartment. His mother-in-law had just got off the unit and was speaking to her next-door neighbor when the incident occurred. Her neighbor was able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. The manufacturer was contacted but they were unwilling to take responsibility for the safety hazard of the product although it is under 3 years warranty. He stated that the tractor only had 37 hours of use. There were no injuries sustained by this incident.
Caller feels that this tractor is a fire hazard and should be investigated.

Purchased John Deere Riding Lawn Mower from Lowes, Greeneville, Tn. on 9 July 2024, delivered on 11 July 2024. When operating, caught fire on 24 July 2024. Contacted Deere - they said to return to Lowes. Returned totally consumed mower to Lowes. Lowes said that JD should replace/JD says Lowes should replace. There is a 30 day return warranty through JD. There is a manufacturer warranty through JD for 1 yr. Then, an extra extended warranty was to take over (Lowes) after the manufacturer warranty ends. JD says we should use the extended warranty - does not take effect until AFTER the manufacturer warranty per Lowes. Letter sent by JD that they would not replace that cause for fire not clear. JD indicates legal steps likely necessary.

The product, in the report: John Deere z370R battery electric zero turn lawn mower
Product: John Deere z370R battery electric zero turn lawn mower. Comments/Questions: When the z370R is connected to mains power, if the mower needs to charge, it begins charging automatically. There does not seem to be a way to manually stop the mower from charging. However, if the mower is unplugged from a properly wired and grounded outlet while charging, there is a large arc between the cord being removed and the outlet. This is bad enough under normal conditions, but this issue is considerably more serious given that the mower is likely in a garage around flammable vapors.

The product, in the report: Lawn tractor/riding mower
The consumer viewed hundreds of Internet posts about this issue with the L or 100 Series mowers. He said there could be hundreds or 1000’s of posts online.
He also reported this matter to CPSC in 2018. The manufacturer indicated that they were not going to address this issue.
The gas tank design was defective. It’s a 2-piece, lower and upper half, plastic injected tank, which comes apart at the seam. If one went to the firm’s website as far back as 2018, the manufacturer sold a 1-piece gas tank, without any seams. So, they were aware of the problem.
One now must guess how much fuel they pour in the lawnmower’s tank and hope they are don’t exceed where the seam is located.
Fuel could leak on the user’s feet and start a fire from that point.
He stores his mower in his shed, so if it caught fire, the damage would be limited to his shed. However, the consumer said millions of people park mowers in their garage, which could lead to a house fire.
1/4/2002. The firm had a recall for this same issue, back in 2002, [REDACTED]. So, they have known about this issue for some time and continued to sell mowers with this fuel tank problem.
Lastly, he saw a potential fine online for automakers and their recalls. He said something similar should be done for this company. Leaking gasoline is an extremely substantial fire danger.

The product, in the report: John Deere X330 42” Deck Riding Mower
John Deere X330 Ride-On Mower Blades Hit Each Other. A 42”, dual blade mower encountered a tall grass clump and one or both of the blades rotated on its shaft causing them to collide and partially destroy each other. Metal shrapnel was thrown but contained by the deck except in the direction of grass ejection. No injuries. The image shows one of the damaged blades and an unused one. The other damaged blade is essentially identical. The cause of this problem is the lack of positive positioning of the blades which will collide unless they are mounted about 90 degrees out of phase. Upon replacing the blades, I torqued the bolts as specified (50 ft-lb) with a high-quality torque wrench and they were easy to rotate with about 40# of force at the tip. I then increased the torque to 55 and then 60 ft-lb. I could still rotate the blades. So when a blade hits an obstacle, it can rotate such that it can hit the other one. Some of the 42” decks (but not mine obviously) had an indexing mechanism to avoid rotation. These decks should be recalled and replaced with ones that don’t allow the blades to rotate relative to the mounts and crash into each other. Luckily, the shrapnel didn’t hit anything of importance.

My John Deere X380 riding mower front left wheel broke while mowing. Thankfully I was able to stop without injury, but if I had been mowing close to the highway or on a hill it could have bin worse. This riding mower has a recall for this problem but I was never notified of it. This is dangerous and all John Deere X380 mowers should be repaired.

I completed an online purchase of a John Deere S100 riding lawn mower from Lowe’s. The lawn mower was to be delivered. The John Deere lawnmower that was delivered on April 26, 2022, had a nonfunctioning seat safety device. The seat safety device is designed to stop the lawnmower blades from operating when the operator is not in the seated position, as is the case during a mower tipover. The seat safety device would not stay installed as designed.

No one hurt Made Dec 10, 2021, sent to the company Jan 27, 2022, published by CPSC Feb 10, 2022
The product, in the report: John Deere 48”, riding lawn mower (with bag catcher) Model S160 Date manufactured: 2021
A few months ago, the emergency brake broke on the mower and one of the drive belts underneath also broke, but on a different date. The manufactured covered the cost of both repairs. However, they charged the consumer for a pick-up and a delivery fee, to do one of the repairs.
11/7/2021: The mower caught fire during use. The consumer was using the mower’s bagger and had just attached a brand new manufacturer’s bagger to pick up leaves.
The way the engine is designed is unsafe, because the muffler and the hot engine are approximately 6” off the ground. This can cause leaves to back up in the front of the mower.
Smoke began emitting from the front of the mower’s tire, while the consumer was on it. She quickly tried to remove the leaves to extinguish the fire. However, within that time, the mower’s tires and it’s plastic frame, went up in flames. The consumer said that this occurred within 60 seconds of the smoke starting.
The consumer called the fire department and started getting buckets of water to throw on the fire. She used 2 fire extinguishers and threw baking soda on the flames, until the fire department arrived. When they came, they extinguished the fire with cannisters. A ground area of approximately 10’ – 15’ around the mower was burned. The consumer said that the flames rose to approximately 5’ in height.
She was extra concerned, because she had just put 2 gallons of gas in the mower.
11/2021: The consumer contacted her insurance company and they reimbursed her for the cost of the mower and bagger, minus the consumer’s deductible. The insurance company rep. told her that they would contact the manufacturer.
She said she had the mower’s deck at the highest elevation, so that it would not be closer to the ground. Still leaves were able to collect between the mower’s deck and the tires.
She also wanted it highlighted, that she saw a puff of smoke and by the time she jumped off the mower, the front tires were on fire. Within seconds, she tried to move the mower away from her home, but the wires and the fuel line were burned and the mower could not be moved.
The owner’s manual, advises not to pick up wet leaves. The consumer said dry leaves can substantially contribute the potential fire hazard. The leaves collect in front as you drive.

I was operating my John Deere X580 Lawn Tractor when the steering wheel outside ring where one holds the wheel snapped apart making it very difficult to steer and putting me in an unsafe situation as I was mowing a hill at the time. I stopped mowing and towed the mower back to my driveway. I reported the problem to the dealer and suggested the manufacturer should be made aware of this mechanical failure. No one seemed at all interested. It was suggested I replace the steering wheel which I have since taken care of.

The product, in the report: John Deere Z445 zero-turn mower Model Z445
I was finishing mowing my lawn with my John Deere Z445 zero turn lawn mower near dark and noticed a glowing ember and flame from the right panel (a fender). The source of the fire was the right side light of a dealer installed BM23575 lighting kit. The light fixture can pivot when it encounters shrubs, as I believe happened in this case. Apparently, the wiring or contacts of the bulb shorted and overheated. The bulb melted its way out of the housing and fell against the plastic fender panel causing it to melt, overheat and produce a flame. I turned the light switch off and the flame abated.
This may be a design defect as John Deere fender panels used to be metal and the lights encased in a housing. The fact that the lights can pivot and the wiring flexes allows the possibility that an electrical short is likely to occur over time. The ‘outrigger’ positioning of the lights leads to the likelihood that they will come in contact with evergreens and bushes in normal use. I can understand that plastic fenders won’t rust and are less expensive, but the lights need to be in a housing for protection.
This right fender panel includes the gas cap and though most people would turn off the mower or the lights as I did, potential contact with gasoline spillage is a possibility.
I would have thought this series of events to be very unlikely, until it happened to me in very normal operation.

The product, in the report: Riding lawn tractor with 42” cutting blades underneath
Approximately 8/31/2019: The consumer used the lawn mower for approximately 15 minutes and pulled it into his garage and got off it. The rod that raises the deck up and down to permit the grass to be cut, caught the consumer’s left shorts pants leg. This caused the consumer to fall on the tractor itself and on the concrete in the garage. The consumer was momentarily knocked out. When he came to, he reached in his pocket for his cell phone and called his neighbor.
Another neighbor saw the consumer fall and came over and tried to assist him. Another neighbor, who is stronger, came over and was able to free him from the tractor, but the consumer remained on the floor. The ambulance came, placed the consumer on a gurney and rushed him Wake Hospital and he was operated on immediately. The consumer’s head landed on the concrete.
The consumer sustained had a large gash on the right side of his head, broke his “right ring finger” and a broken hip. His vision has been affected by the incident and she sees brown spots.
The consumer was kept in the hospital for a couple weeks and has had several follow up visits to the doctor.
The consumer said that his shorts had been caught several times in the past and he has fallen, but it was always outside on the grass. He also has a nephew, who has a similar tractor and his shorts have gotten caught on this mechanism, but he has not sustained any injuries. The consumer shops at the retailer often and indicated that he shared this concern with some of the staff at the store.
The consumer does plan to contact the mfr.
The tractor was serviced by an authorized company in the past. The cutting blades used to dig into yard, but after it was serviced, that issue was resolved.
The mower did not appear to be included in a recall for this specific issue.

We recently purchased a John Deere Z535M 62 inch zero turn mower. My wife had a minor accident while mowing. The mower started to roll backwards on a small hill. She went to hit the foot brake and there was no foot brake. She rolled backwards off a low retaining wall. Lucky she wasn’t hurt or the machine damaged. We know older John Deere zero turn have foot brakes. We thought all riding lawn mowers had foot brakes.
Even the online owner’s manual says not do mow up and down hill. Apparently they are aware there is no way to stop on a hill.
We did not receive an owners manual from the manufacturer. We contacted them three week ago and have yet to receive the manual that we were promised.

The product, in the report: John Deere Riding Lawn Mower E130, 22hp, Green and yellow,
While mowing my yard with a John Deere E130 Riding Lawn Mower purchased from Lowes in Tyler, Tx. on June 29, 2019, the mower caught on fire. Within a matter of minutes, the entire mower was consumed with flames. I’m lucky I saw the flames and got off in time. The wind was blowing and the fire spread. Luckily though, no one was hurt, and I got the flames extinguished in the pasture that kept the fire from spreading and jumping the road that would have contacted other people’s domiciles. I had already called the Baxter Volunteer Fire Dept. They sprayed water on the mower that completed its extinguishing. The fireman completed a report for which I have a copy as well as pictures and videos of the fire.
I suspect that the muffler emitted a spark onto the dry grass which quickly caught fire. The mower’s muffler is very low to the ground and does not have a spark arrestor. My old John Deere LX188 has a spark arrestor around the muffler to prevent this type of incident.

The product, in the report: John Deere riding lawnmower D155 model number 90 hours of use
My John Deere riding lawnmower caught fire a couple of minutes after it was turned off and completely burned up. The engine had approximately 90 hours on it. I used it for about 45 minutes before taking a break. I contacted John Deere and sent them pictures of the burned up mower. The John Deere legal team responded by contending it was up to me to hire someone to prove it was their fault. Fortunately I had parked the mower in my driveway. If I had parked it in my garage it probably would have resulted in a major house fire. I don’t understand why a product “fire” is being treated as a trivial incident

The product, in the report: John Deere lawn tractor model D-105 2013 Transmission failed causing potential significant safety issue
While driving my 2013 John Deere, D-105, the transmission failed as I was transitioning from the road to my lawn, causing me to be in the middle of the road without the ability to move. Fortunately there was no traffic at the time, and I was able to push the mower off to the side until the equipment could be diagnosed and repaired. I believe the transmission issue to be a bad design and consistent with other D-105 transmission recalls.

RE: John Deere L110 Riding Lawn Tractor serial #GXL110A256761: The plastic gas tank separated at the plastic welded seem causing it to leak fuel. This tractor only has 144.9 hours of use. This appears to be the same issue on other John Deere lawn tractors.
January 4, 2002, Alert #02-517 Deere & Company of Moline, Ill., is voluntarily recalling about 8,000 LT lawn tractors. The tractors have a 38”, 42” or 48” mower deck, a 13 to 16 horsepower engine, and are green with yellow trim. “John Deere” and the model number are printed on the hood of the tractor. Models: LT133A, LT155B, LT155C, LT166E, LT166F, LT166G AND LT166J. PROBLEM: The fuel tank can crack and leak fuel, posing a fire hazard and risk of burn injuries to consumers.
I have contacted John Deere and they refuse to do anything about this issue.

The product, in the report: John Deere riding mower Model LA105, 42”, 19.5 H.P.
I was mowing the lawn as usual (3rd gear) when the gas tank caught fire and burned up the back of the mower. I had been mowing for about 30 minutes before the fire broke out. The engine was not involved and was not damaged. It appears there was a leak in either the gas tank or fuel line from the tank and something in the rear end was hot enough to ignite the gas. The gas tank was about half full when the fire started. I did not notice a gas smell when I started the engine and there was no indication of a gas leak on the floor where the mower was kept.
The gas tank and all plastic in the rear was melted, the fiberglass body in the rear was damaged as was the seat and the transmission is now locked up. My right leg was slightly burned (did not require going to a Dr.) but it could have been worse if I had not smelled gas fumes just before the fire broke out.
The mower was purchased new on March 30, 2010 and the hour meter shows 71 hours of use. The last use of the mower before the fire was about two weeks and there were no problems then. The mower has not required any repairs since it was purchased - only routine oil and oil filter change and air filter replacement.

While mowing the yard my nephew saw smoke coming from the top of the mower. He got off & turned it off when it then burst into flames. My wife tried to put it out with water but it got too hot. It started shooting flames & a neighbor put it out with a fire extinguisher. It totally destroyed the mower. It has 1 back tire that doesn’t appear to be damaged. I’ve enclosed numerous pictures of the tractor & ground right where it burned. John Deere’s response, without examining the tractor, was he was mowing with the deck too low & debris flew into hot components, & the claim was denied. (continued on seperate page) (continued) As I explained to their (John Deere’s) representative this could not be plausible. If the front tires were not melted off, as well as the deck wheel, the deck would be raised several inches. Also the debris would exit the shoot to the side or would travel the opposite direction of travel if they came from outside of the deck. There would be no hot components on the rear of the tractor and it was not mowing in reverse. It also shows the position of the deck adjustment handle in the puctures. We have always mowed in the positions marked on the indicator, in the suggested spot. This being said, if the fire was caused by debris on hot components then the safety issue would be the debris access to these hot components. It is my belief that this may have been an electrical fire. A portion of the battery (as seen in the photo) was separated & quite a distance from the rest of it. As of this date I have not been able to get the manufacturer or their 3rd party to examine the tractor even with me offering to transport it back to the merchant or authorized repair facility.

The product, in the report: John Deere D110 tractor (riding lawnmower}
See attached detailed description of need for replacement of rear wiring harness after 47.5 hours of use for a D110 John Deere Tractor (riding lawnmower)
RE: Replacement of rear wiring harness after 48 hours of use for a D110 John Deere Tractor (riding lawnmower)
In September 2015, I left my John Deere tractor for service at a local John Deere service center, which included correcting the sparking, backfiring, and the machine subsequently shutting down. I was subsequently informed by JD that the rear wiring harness needed replacement.
I was amazed that a wiring harness needed replacement after only 48 hours of use and subsequently went and looked under the mower tractor at the JD service place. The inspection revealed that the wiring harness was drooping low due to a push tab, which held the wiring harness to the mower deck had come loose. Photograph 1 shows the replaced wiring harness with the tab attached to the wiring harness. When the tractor is placed in the mowing mode, the tractor vibrates which could have caused the tab to come loose. I opine that the loosened wiring harness was damaged by the drive belt for the mower and the insulation was stripped from 2 wires (Photographs 3&4) in the wiring harness, causing sparking, backfiring and ultimately shutdown.
The local service center replaced the wiring harness but I was required to pay l/3 of the cost in order to get my machine back. I informed the staff I would pursue the 1/3 reimbursement with their headquarters, since I believe it is a safety issue that should be addressed at no cost despite the tractor being out the warranty period. No reimbursement occurred.
The above description, in my opinion is a significant safety concern, since the sparking, back firing of the damaged wire is close to rear fuel tank. The wiring harness under the mower deck is held to the mower deck by only one push tab and the wires under the mower deck are not enclosed in a protective shroud.
I have the actual replaced wiring harness as shown in Photograph 2, which can be furnished to the CPSC upon request. The replaced wiring harness better shows the stripped wires.

The product, in the report: John Deere model LA105, date of manufacture 03/07/2015, ID#: GXA105A086928, color is green & black with yellow seat. 42 inch edge cutting system deck which is yellow in color.
John Deere LA105 lawnmower purchased in 2008 at Lowe’s has had many issues that john deere did not help to remedy while under warranty and currently in september 2015 the mowing deck bracket broke away where it was welded to the deck from the factory. Being a similar mower deck and similar lawnmower to the d-model series of john deere sold during 2010-2011 with the 42 inch edge cutting system deck which there is a recall on the d model john deere for the same problem as my la105 model, the deck breaking away and possible causing harm to individuals around mower and causing expensive damage to mower because of a design flaw and poor materials from the john deere company. When I contacted john deere they said they will not fix my lawnmower that it doesn’t matter if the deck broke in the same manner that the d-model deck broke, it is my problem. It sickens me that john deere is allowed to manufacture such poor quality machines that could and may very well have already hurt people and property. John Deere should repair or buy back these unsafe lawnmowers.

The product, in the report: Riding lawn mower with cutting deck undernear
The consumer was cutting her grass and had used the mower for approximately 30 minutes, when the brakes gave out. The consumer was riding up a small incline when this happened. The mower started rolling backwards, downhill. The consumer was thrown off of the lawn mower and landed on the ground, on her left side. The mower flipped over and landed right beside her, but not on her. The steering wheel detached from the mower and the battery was disconnected. The lights, which would be used to see at night were broken. The consumer sustained an injury to her left shoulder and the entire left side of her body. She said it gets worse when she tries to lie down. The consumer’s mother plans to take her to the hospital later today (7/16/2015).
The consumer called the manufacturer a few minutes prior to calling the CPSC. The rep. (name unknown) told her that her model was not recalled, but she did not offer to file a report. The rep. asked for the consumer’s mailing address and an email address. The consumer told her she did not have an email address. The rep. told the consumer that she was sorry for her injury and hung up.
(Summer - 2014) The consumer had the mower serviced at a manufacturer’s dealer, Aiken, SC, because it would cut off during use. A battery was replaced and some work was done to the engine and the cutting blade was replaced. The consumer had to pay for those repairs.
The consumer estimates that she uses the lawn mower approximately once every 2 weeks.

The product, in the report: Ride on mower
This consumer is reporting his lawnmower purchased 15 - 20 years ago. He noticed that he smelled gasoline lightly as he rode when cutting grass and when stopped, however through out the years he has become more aware of the odor and then became aware of dripping of gas over the past three years. Around Springtime of 2014 he noticed that the gasoline dripping was increasing and he began calling for assistance but dealer in Russellville, AR advised him that there was nothing he could do to help him. He then contacted the manufacturer who advised him to contact the dealer. He contacted one in Dardanelle, AR where mower was purchased but this one was out of business.
There are no injuries being reported - Thank goodness the consumer doesn’t smoke This caller is asking for a new fuel tank because he took his apart May 11th, 2015 but states that he was surprised to see what appeared to be epoxy around the seams and cracks outside the seams that he states had to be placed there at factory because he had never opened it before this day.

The steering rods on the John Deere l130 riding lawn mower catch on the from tires when running, causing the mower to come to a quick and unexpected stop, causing me to hit the steering wheel of the lawn mower fast and hard. I suffered a serious internal injury from this incident on this lawn mower that required a major surgery and I spent 1S days in the hospital. Since my accident I did some research via the computer on this model lawn mower and found many consumer complaints. It seems this lawn mower had a defect In the design and Deere & Company knew there ws a problem with the steering on these mowers, as they later made some sort of kit to flx the front end problems. Many consumers have had problems with the wheels towing out on the mower and the defective design of the steering rods.

Caller had been cutting the grass for approximately an hour using his rideon lawnmower when he hit a clump of dry Ravenna grass while going down an incline. As quickly as he hit the Ravenna grass the grass caught fire but so did his lawn tractor. The entire front of his tractor is burned. The caller got off of the tractor, ran to grab the hose and extinguished the fire.
The caller’s son informed him that his tractor was recalled due to brake problems. His tractor is recalled with release# 11-325 due to laceration hazard and with release# 11-326 for brake failure hazard. I asked the caller if he had applied the brakes and he replied that he couldn’t remember whether he had applied them or not.
There are no injuries to report
The caller contacted the manufacturer May 24th, 2014 & May 28th, 2014 and spoke with [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] called the consumer approximately one hour later to advise him that he had only a two year warranty and that was over. He spoke with [REDACTED] who is also with the manufacturer on May 28th, 2014, however, [REDACTED] only repeated the conversation with [REDACTED]. I asked the manufacturer, John Deere, if he knew of a recall on my particular model and the manufacturer made no comment.
The retailer was contacted after the manufacturer would not assist this caller. The caller talked the retailer’s representative but and other retailer representatives and set up a pick up of the product on 5/30/14..

Sometime during January 2012 I noticed the smell of gasoline in my garage. Over several days I isolated the source to be my Model L111 John Deere Lawn Tractor. Further investigation led to the determination that the plastic gas tank was leaking fuel. Approx 260 hours on the tractor. This particular machine ( GXL111A051973 ) was purchased from The Home Depot on 7/10/2005. I have not heard of any factory recall for this problem.

The consumer says he used the product once per month. He says that a month ago he was mowing the lawn. After 15-20 minutes it cut off, started smoking and caught on fire.
He was near his truck and grabbed the fire extinguisher to put it out mostly but also had to pour water on it. Smoke was coming out from the front of the engine.
He contacted the manufacturer who apologized for the inconvenience. They offered no further assistance. He called his local John Deere Service dept who told him this was the second complaint they had heard of this season of a mower catching on fire.
The consumer is not sure if the other complaint was on a similar model. A local shop replaced a carburetor, and the fuel line that goes through it but they were not sure why the unit caught on fire.

The product, in the report: John Deere Riding mower model D100 prodcut ID 1GXD100ELCC309110
I recently purchased a new John Deere Model D100 (6/2012) and the unit has an issue with clutch engagement which does not allow for safe starts on inclines and provides jerky starts on flat surfaces. The clutch and brake are operated by a single foot control, pressed down, it engages the brake and as you lift off it engages the clutch. The pedal has about 8” of travel and the clutch engagement is at the very end (last 1/4 to 1/2) of the pedals travel therefore it cannot be engaged smoothly before the brake releases, when engaged it slams into gear! When the clutch does engage it causes the front wheels to lift off the ground learching the operator backward nearly tipping the unit end over end. This condition existed at the time of purchase and as instructed by the owner’s manual I contacted the local JD service center and they speculated it was an adjustment issue and that it would take 2-3 weeks for them to repair. At the end of the mowing season I brought the unit in for the adjustment at which point they took it apart and informed me that the D100 could not be adjusted and that JD had no fix for the unit. JD official response is there is no defect and the unit operates correctly. Since contacting JD I have located similar complaints on the internet. See link below.

The product, in the report: 2008 John Deere riding lawn mower model number LA105 - Color Green
I purchased a new John Deere lawn mower model number LA105 for $1,499 in June 2008. I was driving the mower on an incline in my yard when the brake seal started leaking, which caused transmission fluid to seep on to the brake disc, which caused the brakes to fail. Luckily, I’m an experienced operator and was able to divert an accident - a less experienced operator may not have been so lucky. I went to a local JD dealer to find out what is needed to correct the braking problem, they said there is a seal rebuild kit available for ($550) or a new transmission for ($650) The mower only has 45 hrs on it, it has always been parked in my garage and has been well taken care of. I called John Deere expecting there would be a recall for this seal; I was very surprised to find out they “don’t” and that they are unwilling to offer assistance to remedy the situation. I believe JD is being very irresponsible for not standing behind this very unsafe design.

The product, in the report: Riding Lawn Mower
Yesterday I had my engine mounting bolts loosen up while mowing my yard, 3 of them fell out which displaced the engine. This displacement sheered my muffler attachment, sent sparks flying due to the drive pulley being damaged by rubbing against the belt guide which eventually got sheared off as well. I don’t know of any periodic maintenance that specifically tells one to check the torque of the engine mounting bolts. I had an incident with a bolt two years ago that sheared off that was holding the blade on while the blade was in motion on the same lawn mower. Don’t know if I got a bad batch of bolts, or if things weren’t torqued to specs, but I’ve never had things like this happen to a lawn mower before. My lawn mower was bought new in 2004. It is a John Deere LT160.

The product, in the report: John Deere LX188 with a 17 hp Kawasaki motor
I have a John Deere LX188 approx 1996 model year. The fuel pump went out causing fuel to leak out the weep hole at the bottom of the pump directly on the HOT muffler below. I feel this is a hazard as the fuel could of easily ignited and burned the mower, garage and possibly the person riding it, as my internet searches indicated has already happened to other people. I called John Deere customer service and they are reluctant to offer a recall but they must have realized the dangers because the replacement pump comes with a hose to direct the fuel away from the muffler.

The product, in the report: John Deere L-108 Riding Mower
I have a John Deere L-108 Riding Mower. I see from other reports on this site that there have been numerous reports of gas tank leaking/failure.
I checked with my local John Deere Dealer, Georgetown Farm Supply in Georgetown, Texas and they would not cover the repair to have the tank replaced. I expressed my dissatisfaction with them and have contacted the manufacturer, John Deere through their website to seek a refund. I had a battery replaced and the cost of this and the tank repair was $232, of which $45 was for a new battery.
As noted in other complaints about this product, the leaking gas tank exposed me to hazard in that I keep the mower in an enclosed shed, which filled with gasoline vapors from the leaking tank. Thankfully, there was no explosion. But in routine operation, the mower leaked gas from the tank onto the lower part of the chassis and the mower deck. A spark could have easily caused an explosion, which in turn could be lethal or fatal.
Deer should have recalled this product and made good on the repair. They did not.

The product, in the report: John Deere L108A riding lawn tractor
I have a John Deere series L108 riding lawn tractor. I have a problem with the fuel tank leaking gasoline. This is an extreme safety issue as it could cause fire and potenially cause serious, if not death, to the operator. I have talked a John Deere customer service supervisor and was told to take the mower to a John Deere service center to determine the exact cause of the leaking fuel. It was then confirmed that the fuel tank was indeed leaking and needed to be replaced. This same service center indicated that they have replaced several other fuel tanks on John Deere mowers this year. However, the service representative said there was no product recall at this time and would not pay for the repair because the mower is about six years old. To that I say: 1. The fuel tank is not a normal replacement item like a spark plug, therefore it should not need replacing during the life of the mower. The motor should fail before the gas tank. 2. The fuel tank is made of molded plastic composed of several pieces. Therefore, the design is flawed because the engineers knew or should have known that composing the tank of several pieces instead of a single tank with no seams would lead to potential leaks. And due to the importance of safety it should have had a better, safer design. 3. The lawn mower is about six years old but has had excellent care. When not in use, it have been stored in the basement of my home, so it has never been exposed to any extreme weather conditions. Also the gas tank was not punctured in anyway, it is well enclosed in the body of the mower surrounded by metal. The incident number give by John Deere is [REDACTED]. The person I spoke with is [REDACTED]. Her telephone number is [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: John Deere Lawn Tractor with 287 hours of use and always garaged and well maintained. Machine has been used to cut 11,000 sq. ft. of flat grass area once a week. Since Nov. 2010 machine is not used to cut grass but is used once in awhile for spreading fertilizer.
My John Deere L-110 Riding lawn tractor was parked in my garage and had not been used in over a week. During the overnite period of May 15, to the morning of May 16, 2011 my three car garage filled with gasoline vapors to the point that it was unbearable to enter the garage. Had the hot water heater in my garage been a gas type instead of electric my house would have been destroyed by the explosion and ensuing fireball, possibly killing me, my wife and our two children. After carefully opening the garage doors manually so as not to create a spark I let the garage air out which took one and a half hours. When it was safe to reenter the garage I traced the gasoline vapors to the John Deere. Upon closer examination I could see that the gasoline was leaking out of the lower right side seam of the fuel tank and creating a large puddle under the machine. As well as filling the garage with a very large volume of vapors.
