The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made May 8, 2026, sent to the company May 13, 2026, published by CPSC May 28, 2026

The product, in the report: Brand new $15,000 Grasshopper riding mower model 440EFI with 61 inch deck.

Purchased new Grasshopper Zero-turn Model 440 EFI gas. Immediately after delivery and using I found gas was pouring, not dripping, just past the fuel pump onto the top of the hot engine and blowing back onto the hot muffler. I shut it down after taking video. It went thru 8 gallons of gas in 1/2 hr until I discovered this. After days of troubleshooting, it was discovered Briggs & Stratton, the manufacturer of the engine, had installed the incorrect size fuel line which resulted in it falling off allowing raw gas to be poured onto the top of the running hot engine and large muffler. If you review your recalls, you will find a similar recall for this problem in 2001 for the same manufacturer. I do not want to see anyone burned or killed from this manufacturing defect issue. It appears Grasshopper is NOT addressing this issue with a recall or safety bulletin.

The product, in the report: 0-turn, ride on lawn mower

The lawn mower built up pressure in the plastic gas tank. The consumer said when the fuel would get low (less than 1/2 a tank); more pressure would build up in the tank. The consumer would loosen the gas cap and could hear the pressure release.

The consumer has owned the mower for 3- 4 years and he has 102 hours of use on it.

The consumer cut his neighbors grass and sensed something wrong with the mower. He turned the mower off and went to the rear to inspect it. The gas cap literally blew off the tank and the metal valve cover caught fire, when fuel spilled on it from the cap blowing off of it. The consumer had a rag in his pocket and he tried to put the flames out, but they kept re-igniting. Some of the hair on the consumer’s right arm was singed (no medical attention needed). Within 7 - 8 seconds, the entire motor was engulfed in flames. The consumer said that the motor and all of the plastic on the mower burned up and melted. This included the mower’s seat and the plastic controls on it. The mower was a total loss.

The consumer’s wife called 911 and the fire department responded. In the mean time, the neighbor’s son and the consumer attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher and they were somewhat successful. However, the fire department arrived and completely extinguished the fire.

The consumer believes that there was a 7 gallon fuel tank on the mower. He did not have any additional fuel with him and the gas was limited to what was in the tank at the time of the incident. The consumer said that they plastic tank is on the rear right hand portion of the mower. The tank fits on a metal tray, which heats up and in turn, heats up the fuel. As there is less fuel in the tank, the remaining fuel can heat to higher temperature. The consumer noted that over time, the measurement decals on the mower either melted off or detached as a result of this heat. [REDACTED], another person who used the mower prior to this incident also noticed the pressure that built up in the fuel tank.

The local sheriff also came out and filed a report on this incident.

The consumer paid approximately $12,500.00 for the mower.

(6/2013) The consumer called the retailer; 2901 NW. Hwy 24; Topeka, KS 6618; Tel: 785-267-9200 (alt. tell: 888-273-9990) and they arranged for the mower to be picked up. The retailer is a Farm Implement Store. The consumer worked with [REDACTED] (retailer’s rep.), when he purchased it. The retailer contacted the mfr. and they sent one of their rep’s ([REDACTED]) out to look at the mower.

Mr. [REDACTED] arrived at the dealer and looked at the mower with the consumer and the dealer’s rep. present. Mr. [REDACTED] asked where the gas cap was. The consumer told him what happened. The consumer told him that the gas cap had burned up in the fire.

NOTE: The consumer mentioned that he had replaced the gas cap on 1 or 2 prior occasions. He said that the dealer provide replacement caps, because they thought that the cap may not have been venting properly.

Mr. [REDACTED] ended up telling the consumer to turn this matter over to his home owner’s insurance.

The consumer contacted his insurance (State Farm), but they concluded that since the incident did not occur on the consumer’s property, that they were no liable. The consumer note that he had been with his insurance company 30+ years.

The consumer called Mr. [REDACTED], but prior to that, the consumer’s wife contacted their agent. The agent worked on this claim further and the insurance company reversed their decision and gave the consumer $10,200.00 for it.

The consumer called Mr. [REDACTED] and upgraded to a diesel mower by this same manufacturer ($14,383.40).

The consumer called Mr.[REDACTED] and said that his insurance company should not have to cover the entire cost of the replacement mower. Mr. [REDACTED] called the retailer and the consumer was given a $300.00 discount on the purchase of the replacement mower.

NOTE: The consumer said that the mfr. should have covered the entire cost of replacing the mower.
