No one hurt Made May 23, 2026, sent to the company May 29, 2026, published by CPSC Jun 12, 2026
The product, in the report: Cub Cadet GX54D Fast attach blade system for powered mowers
While operating the mower under normal mowing conditions, one mower blade fully detached from the cutting deck and was ejected approximately 10 feet from the machine. No injury occurred and no property damage was observed, however, this constitutes a near miss safety incident involving a high energy rotating component failure. Machine Information Model: Cub Cadet XT2 GX54D 61.2 hours Purchase date: 5/31/2025. Service history: Blades installed by authorized Cub Cadet dealer approximately 2 months prior to incident 4/2026 at 50 hours. Incident Description During normal operation, the center blade separated completely from the mower deck assembly and was propelled through the discharge shoot approximately 10 feet away from the machine. The mower had not been modified by me since the dealer-installed blade service. The event occurred without prior warning of impact or obstruction at the time of failure. There was also a witness present at the time of the incident. Current Status: Mower has been taken out of service immediately Upon initial inspection, not only did the center blade eject, the blade next to the discharge shoot was found to be not only wobbly but loose and not seated correctly. What I’m seeing is that dirt / debris is entering the fast attach collar system and the debris builds up in the housing over time. As this debris builds inside the housing it actually pushes the mechanism in an upwards direction, slowly unlocking the pins. As the mechanism rises from debris build up, the locking pins to the blade start to retract from the blade. The more build up, the more they retract. This is also exasterbated by using the deck wash system. The debris inside turns to fine silt and gets washed into the mechanism which then hardens and layer after layer it builds and progressively gets worse. All of the build up within the housing / mechanism is clearly visible and identifiable. Its also noted that the blade holes for the locking pins are rounded which indicates improper seating of blade to spindle and visible damage to corner of left blade from center blade ejection.
No repairs or alterations have been made post-incident Deck wash system was used after each use

No incident, no one hurt Made May 4, 2026, sent to the company May 7, 2026, published by CPSC May 21, 2026
The product, in the report: Cub Cadet Zero Turn Lawn Mower. Ultima Z2 50”, Fabricated Deck, 23horse power Kawasaki V twin engine, Dula hydrostatic transmissions. Yellow and Black. DIM H 45.4” W 60.5” D 80.5”
I just received a new Cub Cadet zero turn lawn mower. During the first drive, before I mowed any grass, I pushed the tiller arms all the way forward at the same time, the mower violently jerked to the right and I nearly lost control. If I had not been going slow to familiarize myself with the machine it could have caused serious injury. Upon inspection the tiller arms have stops in the form of adjustable bolts threaded into a pressed rivnut. The rivnut failed on the left side an came completely out causing the left tiller went much farther forward than it should have leading directly to the near loss of control.

No incident, no one hurt Made Aug 11, 2025, sent to the company Aug 15, 2025, published by CPSC Aug 29, 2025
The product, in the report: Product: Cub Cadet ZT1 50 Zero Turn Mower Model: 17AIEACZ010 Serial: 1G319H50013 Purchase Date: February 21, 2020 (Home Depot)
I am reporting a potential safety defect with my 2020 Cub Cadet ZT1 50 zero-turn mower (Model 17AIEACZ010, Serial 1G319H50013, purchased February 21, 2020 from Home Depot).
The mower has had repeated PTO clutch bolt shearing failures since purchase. This is a critical drivetrain component that, when it fails, can cause sudden loss of blade engagement and potential projectile hazards.
The PTO clutch bolt has sheared off multiple times despite proper installation, correct torque, and use of OEM parts. This is not due to normal wear or operator misuse. The issue was first reported to Cub Cadet under warranty in 2023 via an authorized dealer ([REDACTED]) but was never resolved.
The mower is currently at a machinist because the PTO bolt has sheared off inside the crankshaft again. The immediate cause of this latest failure was an authorized Cub Cadet dealer overtightening the bolt far beyond Cub Cadets torque specifications, making it impossible to remove without drilling. This overtightening likely created additional stress on the part, contributing to repeated failure.
This repeated shearing poses multiple safety risks, including:
Sudden loss of blade function while mowing, leading to loss of control.
Potential ejection of parts or debris at high speed.
Increased risk of injury to the operator or bystanders.
I have photos of the failed bolts, purchase receipt, and service history from authorized dealers. I believe this product should be investigated for a possible design or manufacturing defect.

No one hurt Made Jul 29, 2025, sent to the company Aug 1, 2025, published by CPSC Aug 15, 2025
The product, in the report: Cub Cadet zero turn lawn mower, model ZTS1 42”
Cub Cadet zero turn lawn mowers with a steering wheel (e.g., model ZTS1) have a safety defect wherein the steering wheel will lock without warning, preventing any directional control of the lawn mower. The steering wheel can lock while mowing is in progress with no prior warning signs to the operator. The locking occurs due to the poor design of the steering mechanism housing which allows a buildup of grass and leaves within the housing that jams the steering wheel mechanism (gears and rods). The steering wheel mechanism is not designed for easy access for cleaning -- it does not have a removable access plate. Furthermore, since the internal cavity is quite narrow where the steering wheel mechanism is located, debris accumulates at a fast rate, necessitating removing protection covers too frequently for practical usage. A redesign of the steering wheel cavity is warranted either with easy access plates, or more room to enable debris to fall without accumulating.

The product, in the report: Zero turn lawn mower
4/24/2021: The first time the consumer tried to use the mower, it would not start. The consumer took the mower back to the dealer that same day. The dealer told him that they would keep it for at least 3-weeks. The consumer pointed out that he needed a mower and could not wait 3 weeks. 4/25/2021: The consumer picked up the mower from the dealer, but when he took it home, the same problem was present. Either the mower would not start or would stall as soon as it started. The mower has been worked on 4 times for the same exact problem, at a service center. It was also serviced a 5th time, and the dealer’s technician came to work on the mower at the consumer’s home. However, the same problem was still present afterwards.
Sometimes, the mower works for approximately 90 minutes, before stalling and stopping. The consumer might have to wait 10 – 30 minutes and the mower might start again or would start and only work for 10 – 15 minutes. This mower has a push-start feature, and the ignition has been replaced one time but has not solved the problem. (02/2025) An authorized manufacturer’s service center has been working on the machine for the past 2 months. The consumer spoke with the manufacturer on 2 different occasions. One time he called them and was told they did not have any record of speaking with him. The consumer previously split the service cost with the manufacturer and paid $250 towards the repair. It was later confirmed that the prior service paperwork was not submitted to the manufacturer and that’s why they did not have the records. The consumer called the manufacturer a second time and spoke with [REDACTED] and was assigned a CASE# [REDACTED]. The consumer was asked to provide receipts and documentation for the mower and the prior services performed on it. He was told that they would send him information to reply to, but he never received the email. He followed up with the company but hasn’t been able to speak with the prior representative or anyone further about his case. The mower presents a safety matter.
(01/2026) The machine would stop unexpectedly on a hillside, in the middle of the road, while turning, presenting a safety issue

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet Riding Lawnmower 2018
Cub Cadet riding lawnmower had been running about 10 minutes. I was slowly turning the wheel and I saw a big flash of flame in the front of the lawnmower on the right side. I immediately turned the mower off. The front of the mower was now in flames. I jumped off the mower and the ground started burning around it. I ran to get the water hose and sprayed the mower down until there were no more flames. The entire right side of the front of the mower was now destroyed by the flames and was now melted or burned. I noticed that on the right side of the gas tank there were wires smoking again after I had already soaked the area good. I then soaked them again. The plastic gas tank they were next to was partially melted.

No injuries occurred. The tractor was parked at the time. I has mowed for only about 30 minutes and then parked the tractor to go make a phone call. Returning about 60 minutes later.....poof.....I can send photos if needed.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet Lawn mower with tiller capability Model 13RQ11CP056
The tractor’s engine has the following:
Model:LT1050 (engine) Serial: 3725405833 Mfr: 2011
The tractor does not appear to be included in CPSC Recall # [REDACTED], but presented the exact same problem in the recall (#12-132): “A drive gear in the lawn tractor’s hydrostatic transaxle can fail causing brake failure, posing a crash hazard to consumers.”
The dealer installed new lower drive belt, but this did not correct the problem.
The lawn mower locks up when moving forward or attempting to turn around. The mower would not move forward or in reverse, when this occurred.
The consumer believes that he has experienced the problem for approximately 8 or more years. The dealer has worked on the mower approximately 5 times, but could not resolve the issue. The consumer has been attempting to call the firm for the past 4 weeks, but has never been able to speak with a live person. He has left his phone number, with messages about his concerns, but has not received a return call.
The consumer asked the dealer if they could change the transmission fluid and the dealer’s rep. ([REDACTED]) said it cannot be changed, because the fluid container is sealed and cannot be accessed. The consumer said as the oil and fluid breaks down, this is a key factor that contributes to the mower locking up.
He has never used the tiller feature. He owns a ½ acre and has only used the machine for mowing grass.
The consumer claimed that 1 of his neighbors purchased the exact same mower near the same time that he did, and experienced the same problems. He said that his neighbor filed suit against the firm and the firm purchased his mower back.
There have never been any injuries with the consumer’s mower.

The product, in the report: this riding mower, each of the two mower blades is connected to its own motor by a metal rod. The visible parts of the metal rods that connect the mower blades to the motors are about an inch in diameter and appear very sturdy, but as the rods enter the motor, where they are no longer visible, the diameter of the rod abruptly tapers down to about a quarter of an inch of cheap, brittle alloy (see picture). This is a major design flaw that results in the thin alloy part of the rod snapping inside the motor, and completely destroying the motor, any time there’s even a slight bump on the mower blade. My husband liked this mower so much that he didn’t want to return it when one of these rods broke, destroying the motor, the very first time he mowed the yard. The company claimed it was a defective part and replaced it free of charge, so he gave it another chance. Several days later when the new mower blade motor finally arrived, my husband was able to change it quickly and easily. Unfortunately, it broke again, and again. We are on the fourth blade motor now. The cost for a new one is over $400, so this is not a minor expense. We’ve had this mower for less than 3 months. Cub Cadet should consider finding a new source for the blade motors - they currently buy blade motors made by Mingland Nanjing Electronics, and this company is obviously selling an inferior product.

I purchased a CC30H cub cadet in April 16,2020 and this spring, April 9,2021 I took it out of the shed mowed my lawn then shut it off to clean it up. When I got back on the mower the unit was locked up. The brake release didn’t work either so moving the mower wasn’t going to happen. My husband tried to move it and hurt his back. I called repair and they said the belt was probably wet and to try it the next day. I did manage to move it but again after mowing it locked up once again.

The product, in the report: riding lawn tractor with 42” cutting deck (underneath)
The consumer used lawn tractor for approximately 90 minutes and stop. He changed the lawn bags and sat back in the seat. he noticed smoke emitting from the engine. He opened the engine and saw flames emitting from the right side (right side if one were sitting on the tractor). The flames were opposite of the carburetor. Flames were also coming from the top of the fly wheel, which separate from the first location. The consumer used an entire container of fire extinguisher, but was not able to put out the flames.
The consumer immediately called the fire department and they arrived approximately 10 - 15 minutes later and extinguished what was left. The lawn tractor was a total loss. It had a 1/2 tank of fuel at the time of the incident and the fuel tank was plastic.
The consumer estimates that he used the tractor once week for 60 – 90 minutes each time.
11/5/2019: The consumer called the manufacturer and reported the matter to a Customer Service Rep. The rep. placed the consumer on hold for a while and came back gave the consumer a CASE# [REDACTED], and told him the matter would be turned over to their Risk Management Dept. The Rep. told the consumer that he could not be sure if someone would follow up with him.
The consumer is extremely concerned that there could be an unknown widespread issue with this mfr’s products.
There were no injuries.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet LT42 Tractor Lawn Mower
Dear [REDACTED], After a great deal of research into the best lawn tractor for my new home on 1.5 acres, I purchased the Cub Cadet LT42 online from Home Depot. I had a very bad experience right from the beginning, which is not your doing but pertinent to my overall dissatisfaction and deep regret of my choice. It was delivered in a crate and dropped on my driveway. After many frustrating calls to Home Depot, I was unable to get anyone to help me with uncrating and setting it up. I had to pay a handyman $75 to do this for me. Had I known I was responsible or uncrating and setting it up when I purchased it, I would never had made this choice. I was very pleased with my new tractor once it was set up and usable. However, that did not last long. As I was cutting my lawn two months later, the mower stopped engaging. After a call to Home Depot who referred me to Cub Cadet, I contacted a recommended service company. They told me that I need to bring my tractor to them for repair. unfortunately, it does not fit in my car! So I had to pay to get them to pick it up and bring it back to me. I was without my tractor for three weeks as a result. When I paid for it, I was told that the belt had broken and it was not covered under the warranty. I was out $140 to repair my brand-new tractor. Then came August and my tractor was not starting right away. I had to try several times until it started. it progressively got worse. Instead of spending money to have the tractor again transported to the service company, I hired a recommended tractor repairman who informed me that the starter solenoid was bad and that fuel was also leaking past the carburetor and filling the combustion chamber. He fixed it for $300. It worked for one cutting and once again, failed to start. The repairman came out for the second time and confirmed that the fuel had again filled the combustion chamber and muffler. He removed the spark plug and attempted to get the fuel out of the combustion chamber by cranking the engine as he had done during the previous repair visit. This time, a huge ball of flames shot out the front and sides! I had been standing close by with my dog and luckily decided to back up and avoided being seriously injured. The flames came dangerously close to my shed. And fortunately, the repairman was not injured. He is no longer willing to touch the tractor, as he said in his many years of working with them, he has never seen one do this. I am now terrified of this tractor and honestly, after seeing flames shoot out of it, I am afraid to operate any one. I am now without a tractor and have had to hire someone to cut my grass. My current total expenses for the tractor, handyman to set it up, repair #1, and repair #2, plus lawn services is $2200 and will continue to increase until I can get a replacement tractor. I am requesting a full refund of my tractor purchase and reimbursement of all of my other expenses as well. And I need someone to retrieve the tractor from my property. As I stated above, even if it were to be repaired, I am too afraid of a repeat issue with fire coming out of it. I value my life too much! My receipts are enclosed. Please call, email, or send me a reply to the above address as soon as possible to let me know how you will resolve this issue. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.

The product, in the report: Zero-Turn Riding Lawn Mower
The consumer indicates that he was mowing his lawn and simultaneously smelling gas. When the consumer was finished, he put his lawn mower away but noticed, the second time he went to use it, that the unit had no fuel in it. The consumer proceeded to add fuel and cut his grass, again smelling gas all the while. When finished, the consumer inspected his unit and noticed that it was leaking gas from the two front-bolts the gas tank is mounted to the frame on.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer (Case Number: [REDACTED]) and explained the situation; the representative he spoke to informed him that there was no assistance they could provide free of charge thus the five-gallon, plastic gas tank needed for his machine would cost him 189.99$.
The consumer states that the unit is used thirty to forty times per year for approximately two hours each use.
The consumer plans on keeping the lawn mower for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

I was storing my Cub Cadet lawn mower in the garage and noticed that there was a bad smell of gas throughout the garage. After investigation, I noticed that it was coming from the underside of the gas tank around a gasket that had broken down on my Cub Cadet zero turn s48 lawn mower. I found a recall (11-733) on the same model between January and March of 2011. When I called the manufacturer, they said that my mower was made before those dates and therefore the recall did not apply. The product, in the report: riding lawn mower
I just got finished with my weekly mowing my acre of property. Turned mower off and lifted hood to cool off as I always do before putting it back in the garage. I left it sitting in the driveway and decided to finish edging with the weed eater and blow off clippings with the blower. When I was all done with that I decided to take the riding mower again across my back yard with the deck in the highest position to “sweep” the clippings left from mowing earlier, down to back of my property to make the yard look nicer, instead of leaving rows of cut grass. This is typically what I do since I like the lawn to look ‘clean’ when I am finished. I got about 3/4 of the way done ‘sweeping’ the clippings and started to smell something burning. Thought is was a neighbor burning stuff. Then I noticed smoke out the the right side of the engine and then sudden a lot of smoke. Suddenly the mower quit running and stopped. The smoke increased rapidly. I get scared and jumped off. I walked away from it a few yards and when I turned around there were flames under the engine. By the time ran to get the hose pulled out and to where the mower was it was totally engulfed into an inferno.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet CC30 H riding mower with bagger
This relates to property damage caused by the bagger on the CC30 Rider mower made by Cub Cadet / MTD. The metal hook on the back of the bagger latched onto my fence while using it, and ripped a hole in the fence while I was riding it. It caused the machine to “rock” while I was on it because it got caugh in the fence. The design of this bagger is ridiculous. It extends a few inches beyond where the bagging compartment ends and is supposed to act as way to secure the lid of the bagger. Whoever designed this was not thinking.
To be clear, I turned around and looked back as I was backing up with this machine to make sure the bagger did not hit the fence. It did not. What it did do was latch onto the chain link and ripped a hole in the fence as i pulled away, not knowing the poorly designed hook had connected to the fence. That hook caused hundreds of dollars in damage to my fence. A new fence that caused thousands of dollars. Unreal. I cant tell you how disappointed I am in the product and the company’s response. What a ridiculous design.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet GTX 1054 54” Lawn hydrostatic mower
The steering on my GTX 1054 Cub Cadet Garden Tractor fails to respond. When the steering wheel is turned the gear may only mesh every 4 or 5 teeth. This is a large hydro-static garden tractor with a 54” deck. As you approach obstacles it may turn a little but the steering wheel may take a revolution to get turned enough to avoid the objects.
This began last season, I ordered the steering parts ( bearing, gear plate and gear) and replaced them. The mower is only 4-5 years old and this seemed early to have to replaced steering components. Actually I have never heard of anyone having to replaced steering gears on lawn mowers of any age. However this seemed to work throughout the winter and early spring. About 9 months later as the mowing season began it started again.
I called Cub Cadet to check on recalls or service bulletins. I was told there was a recall and was given a case [REDACTED] along with a list of service centers. I called the first four dealers multiple times to get in for repair, no one seemed to want to work on it, even the dealer I bought the machine from who has a good reputation for service after the sale. I called the fifth dealer who did make the repair but told me it was not under recall and they just tighten the bolts. I brought it home and the same thing is happening the first time I used it after the repair, but the steering is the worse than it has ever been. I am actually hitting things with the mower deck because it does not turn as expected.
I called Cub Cadet and this time they said there was a recall for the power steering but only if it was still under warranty. I feel there is a problem with either the design or more likely the quality of parts that is causing this problem. I doubt I am the only one affected nationwide and I would like to report this so it may be tracked and hopefully the company will make good on the safety of their product.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet Zero-turn Mower RZT 50 KW
It’s a beautiful Sunday Morning at our new home my wife says she’s going to cut grass we’ve had this mower a 50 inch deck ZeroTurn Mower cub cadet RZT 50 EW I just want to say before I go into detail that the beautiful Sunday morning on 20 May 2018 could have been one of the worst days of my life I could have lost my wife, because of this very unusual problem with thismower all I can do is thank God she is still alive, and for the two men that came over to go fishing that jerked her off the seat to get her out of harms way before the tractor at any moment could have exploded. And since this is consumer reports I would like to let you know that before I spoke with anyone about this I thought I would speak to the company in town here that I bought the mower form but they were very snotty towards me, they were very unfriendly to me I spoke with a [REDACTED] something or another I’m not sure of his name I think he is one of the owners of my place of purchase “Clermont County Equipment”They are in Milford that’s their main store and they have a Nother store in Amelia Ohio outside of Cincinnati Ohio it was not a good talk he acted like I was a total idiot just trying to get something for nothing! I was brought up a lot better than that I’m 67 years old a Veteran of the Vietnam war a Father and Husband Of 35 years we have raised 2 beautiful Daughters that are both respected and successful I love my God my Lord Jesus Christ my family and my Country and can say I have never cheated anyone!! I’m not the smartest guy in the world but I’ve been around motors cars and Race Cars stock cars all my life. So getting back to the problem my wife just filled the tank up with gas What happens next is mind boggling luckily she got off in time but the Cub Cadet - KZ 50 was already a goner there was no hope for it the only thing that saved it from totally going up into a ball of flames was a pond next to it where I filled my bucket with water to put the flames out otherwise it would’ve burnt down to a skeleton. When I went to put the fire out I had no idea where it had started from, but after a day I looked at it and the only thing I can come up with is that the clean out bowl underneath the carburetor separated and let all the gas come out which started the fire that is my guess, and I do believe it’s a pretty darn good observation that’s where the fire started. What I cannot understand is how it separated I just looked at it about an hour ago and it’s separated but the nut and the electronic piece is still attached the nut could not have turn left or right it could not have loosened up or tighten by itself yet it had a separation and I’m sure that’s where all the gas was coming from it’s got me stumped I just wish someone could look at it with a open mind and a fare opinion and find out the real problem so NO ONE ELSE GETS HURT that’s all I really have for now except we have to buy a new tractor which I’m retired and my wife is getting ready to retire and we thought this tractor would last us until we passed for the simple reason I take care of our equipment I have always taking care of my equipment and it last a long long time and also I had the [REDACTED] two cylinder engine it was in good shape I just don’t get it I could be wrong it could’ve been something else but that sure looks like some type of defect when the clean out bowl for the carburetor separates, “yet it’s still together” it almost looks like it was pressed on which I don’t know if it was or not I sure would not think so that would be a defect in itself that’s all I have I hope this will help out and hopefully save someone’s life or someone who might have a lot of troubles for the rest of their lives God bless you all thank you for your time [REDACTED]

i have a cub cadet riding lawn mower purchased april 2012. 2 weeks ago, the hydrostatic transmission failed, causing the mower to go freewheeling down a small incline in my lawn. the brake pedal did nothing to stop mower. i am handicapped so my son mows my lawn for me. after an hour, my son tried mower again and exact same problem reoccurred. i told him to shut it off and he towed it to my garage as i was researching cub cadet repairs on the internet, i learned there was a safety recall for my mower’s transmission problem. when i checked mower model and serial numbers, date of manufacture, and transmission model and serial numbers, it appears my mower and transmission were made just after your recall manufacture dates. IS IT POSSIBLE YOUR RECALL ISN’T BROAD ENOUGH? my mower otherwise is in perfect condition and maintained well above cub cadet’s maintenance schedules my mower is : Cub Cadet LTX 1050 model 13WQ91AP056 serial 1K231H30284 manufactured 11\ 2011 Hydro-Gear transmission model 618-0319 serial 1243H30306

The product, in the report: Yellow - 50” Cut Cub Cadet Lawnmower XLT 1050
FIRE/EXSPLOSION - of Lawnmower on April 24, 2018. My husband went to get the garbage cans (two) and parked the mower and came inside our home. Approx. 10-15 min later he heard the dogs barking and looked outside and the mower was on fire. He yells to me to call 911 as he runs outside, unhooked our dog who was near by, run back inside and grabbed the keys to my dads car to move it and by the time he got back outside the lawnmower explodes, throwing debris on him and the car keeping him from opening the door. This caused the top of the mower to be expelled onto the cars left bumper which engulfs into flames as the mower had a full tank of gas. My husband gets the water hose to start fighting the fire. As we wait for the Fire Department, I move our other vehicle, dog, try and get my husband to move back from this extremely dangerous fire. The wind was blowing for strong this day and every time I tried to get close to him the wind would change and I would get black smoke in my face. We start hearing Fire trucks, they pass by my house. I freak out, thinking they missed our house and call 911 back only to be told they where dispatched to another location. (We live about 1 mile from the Fire Station) The car explodes and my husband goes down, I am really freaking out now (he had a stroke in 2012 so I was scared something was wrong with him) but he gets back up and continues to try and save our house from this fire. Another Fire Truck goes by, then another... the car explodes again and again. Finally a Fire Truck pulls in and helps my husband put out this fire and he is ok only exhausted. He has PTSD and is now having nightmares about this issue over and over again, seeing his funeral. Seeing his family live without him. He is in therapy trying to work through this horrible experience we are just glad he was not on the lawnmower when it decided to catch fire/explode. I found out after the fact the company has similar “FIRE ISSUES/RECALLS” that we where unaware of on the exact same model of lawnmower. We purchased the mower new in 2013. Place of purchase: Elberta Hardware, Elberta AL 36530 / Make: Cub Cadet Model: XLT 1050 - the recall is on the Cub Cadet website for a fuel filter on the engine.

On Tuesday, October 31, I was using my 2009 Cub Cadet 1040 LTX mower to cut my yard one final time for the season. After cutting my yard, I parked my mower in our garage. I then went to get my truck from the street. As I was backing my truck into the garage I looked in rear view mirror and noticed the my mower engine was completely engulfed in flames! After putting the fire out I noticed that the exhaust manifold had broken loose and had to have been rattling around while I was cutting and the when I stopped the mower the hot exhaust manifold sparked the fire. The damage to the engine is extensive. The plastic shell around the engine is melted, the spindle is melted onto the engine, the spark plug hose and hose hose leading from the exhaust to the air filter has disintegrated. The spark plug is melted into the engine and the exhaust manifold is resting on the inside of the engine. The oil stained the mower and my garage floor and the hood of the mower is now burned and black

I have a Cub Cadet lawnmower that I purchased 2 years ago that was brand new at the time. Well today when I was done cutting grass I shut it off and the engine burst into flames in which I was able to contain and extinguish the fire before any major damage to my home but sustained injuries on my hand to include blisters and lacerations. So far after trying to contact the manufacturer I have been unsuccessful due to being transferred from department to different department. The lawnmower in question is a cub cadet xt1, 46 inch deck with a Koehler 22hp engine.
It appears that the current company in question does not have a concern in assisting me and I am looking at having to get the media as well as a lawyer to assist me in resolving this matter.

The product, in the report: Zero turn, 50” deck, cub cadet riding lawnmower
I was cutting my front yard after refueling when for no apparent reason, the engine just quit. Having had trouble with the safety seat interlock before, I raised up off the seat to see what was going on. When I did, I smelled smoke and saw flames coming from the engine area. I jumped off the unit and ran to the house to get a garden hose. By the time I got back, the entire rear of the engine was engulfed in flames.(My wife took pictures) After about 5-10 minutes, I had the fire out and kept cooling the unit with water. Later that day, after googling “Cub Cadet Fire Hazard” I called the manufacturer, MTD, in Ohio and mentioned that over 4300 units had been recalled for a fire hazard. The initial rep as much as called me a liar, he said there was only an “advisory” issued for the units. I then spoke to his supervisor and was told because my model number was not on their recall list, they would accept no responsibility whatsoever for my unit catching fire. I had taken my unit to a authorized service center for the seat problem prior to that and nothing was ever said to me about a fire hazard possibility. I purchased the unit new from Tractor Supply Corp in June 2011. The unit only had 122 hours on its hour meter when it caught fire. The supervisor had stated there WAS a recall and it was due to a grommet attached to the fuel tank that was causing the problems, but they could not/would not do anything to compensate me for my loss. I have contacted my homeowners insurance company and that is still pending.

The product, in the report: 2009 Cub Cadet RTZ zero turn mower. yellow and black
I used my 2009 Cub Cadet RTZ mower that day to mow under 2 acres of lawn, as I do each and every week as needed since the day I bought it. Please know that this mower was in excellent condition and was regularly maintained to assure proper running order and to extend the life of the mower. It has had regular oil changes, the blades are replaced every year, the pulleys are checked as well and overall maintenance is provided with extra care in spring and fall. I’ve never had a problem with the mower until May 17th? possibly 18th of this year 2017.
I mowed almost an acre and then parked the mower, cleared it from grass both on and under the mowing deck as well as clearing any grass and debri from the engine area. I had a glass of water, took a little break, even had time for an ice cream cone...then I went back to work mowing the rest of the grass.
I finished with no problems at all, parked it in the shade and again cleared grass from all the areas described above as I do every time I use it. I then proceed to raise the mower deck and drive it to the garage where I backed it in as I always do. I shut it down, took off my ear protectors, put them in the side compartment, grabbed my flashlight that I use to see under the deck when I clean it and got off the mower. I grabbed my drink and stood there for a moment drinking water and wiped some sweat away. All in all I was probably in the garage for about 2 2 1/2 minutes. I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. I finished my drink and started to walk home which is next door, about 300 feet or so.
I went into my house, immediately undressed and jumped into the shower. I showered for approx 8-10 minutes and as soon as I opened the shower door I could smell smoke. I looked out the window and black smoke was rolling across my lawn. I threw on my bathrobe and ran to the front door, grabbed the phone and ran outside to the porch. Immediately I could see a lot of smoke and flames coming from the side of the garage where I parked the mower. I called 911 and asked for help. I could feel the heat from my porch and knew that the fire was too out of control for me to do anything.
The neighbor lady, saw the smoke and came over, she walked down the road to get to the house and try to get the dog out. She said she saw flames coming from right where the lawn mower was parked. The other garage door was closed but she could tell that it was starting to engulf the entire garage.
The fire dept came out, tried to stop the fire but it took down the entire garage, the shed behind it, and burnt out the entire inside of the house. Most of the structure of the house is still standing but it’s completely burnt out. Everything is gone.
The fire dept did their investigation and stated that the lawn mower was the cause of the fire and that it looked like something in the engine area burst out of it. The company that my brother had content insurance through (is was my brothers garage and house) came out to investigate and tagged the mower with an orange tag that says Do Not Disturb, Evidence.
The insurance company is now trying to make a list of everything that was lost.
We don’t know yet if it caught fire, or if the engine blew up or what but the mower was 100% positively the cause of the fire according to officials.
P.S. The dog was rescued.

The product, in the report: Lawn Mower
The consumer states that after about a year of owning his lawn mower, his transmission cooling fan quit working. The dealership informed him that he needed to pay out-of-pocket since this was not considered part of the transmission but quit working due to normal wear-and-tear. Five hours after the transmission cooling fan was fixed, it quit working again. The consumer took the unit back to another dealership and this time they said it was covered under the lawn mower’s warranty. The consumer contacted the Manufacturer about this issue; his claim number is [REDACTED].
The consumer indicates that after approximately thirty seconds of going up a hill, the mower quits moving.
11/2014 (Approximately) - The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative he spoke to informed him that they could not assist him since the unit was out of warranty and not included in a recall.
04/15/2015 (Approximately) - After having used the unit for approximately one hour, the consumer reached down to check the fluid level in the transaxle and burned his right hand with said transaxle; his injury was treated at home.
The consumer states that prior to ceasing use of the unit in April 2015 after his injury, he used it approximately once weekly for about one hour. The consumer plans on keeping the unit for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The product, in the report: Zero Turn Riding Lawnmower
This caller is reporting the fire caused by his riding lawnmower and his 15 year old son’s burn injury to his right arm and hand. He purchased this unit from Pratts Lawncare Missouri sometime in 2010.
He had no problems with the unit until Wednesday, July 20th, 2016 when his 15 year old son was on riding lawnmower.

The product, in the report: LTX 1040 Riding Lawn Tractor
The consumer stated that on 4/7/16, he was mowing the lawn for about 1-1.5 hours. The tractor stalled so he turned the ignition key off.
The consumer noticed flames coming form the front left of the tractor. The consumer got off the tractor and opened the hood. The consumer saw flames near the carburetor and hot exhaust muffler. The consumer tried to extinguish the flames with some green lawn clippings. That slowed down the flames but did not extinguish them.
The consumer thought to turn off the gasoline at the tank but there were no valves to turn it off. The consumer watched as the flames grew larger and move towards the gas tank. The plastic gas tank melted from the flames. The gasoline in the tank ignited.
The only thing the consumer could do was water it with garden hose. This again only slowed down the flames but not extinguish them.
The whole tractor is burnt. Repair is not possible on the unit.
The consumer went on the firm’s website and saw to report the issue to CPSC.
The consumer stated that nothing hit the tractor and there were no foreign objects that got into the tractor. Before the tractor completely burnt, the consumer noticed that there were some rubber gasoline lines at the carburetor, near the muffler. The consumer believes that the rubber lines failed and spilled gasoline onto the muffler which ignited the gasoline.

Cub Cadet RZT L Series tractor after being turned off caught on fire.
The submitter added:
History of Lawnmower
Cub Cadet RZT L Series Tractor, purchased on 6/2/2014 for $2655.19 and delivered on 6/4/2014. Caught on fire on 1/15/2016 and burned to the ground:
Homeowners (State Farm) reported coverage limited by my deductible (1%) of home value, so deductible would be $3000.
Cub Cadet said that they referred people to their homeowners once the tractor was over 1 year old, since almost all the defects happened in the first year. They told me Big Reds Equipment was the authorized service dealer in Granbury, TX. I called Big Reds and scheduled a time to pick up the tractor for them to determine the cause of the fire. Received a call back from who requested the receipt and shipping information, which I scanned and attached to an email. She called back and said I needed to contact Cub Cadet and obtain a incident report number.
I called Cub Cadet and was told they would give me a number, but because of the time of ownership was greater than 1 year (1 year and 7 months) they would only refer me to my homeowners policy. The person I dealt with also indicated that since I could not come up with the model number or serial number he couldn’t do much to help. [REDACTED during PII review], service manager for Big Reds called on 1/22/2016 to discuss the lawnmower. He said he felt my best option was to deal through Home Depot, who might have more influence with Cub Cadet. Cub Cadet was not helpful at all. He also said I had several options at this juncture. He would buy the burned up mower for part, and if an agreement was reached to repair the mower he would help with that. He said they would not be able to determine the cause of the fire, but they were still waiting to hear from Kohler, who made the engine for the tractor.
1/23/2016 called Home Depot and talked with [REDACTED during PII review], and I am emailing him this information at [REDACTED during PII review]. Chris also suggested I call 1 800 Home Depot and discuss the situation with them, which I will do next.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet Z-Force Riding Mower Gas Tank Black part number 01004350
I had a gas leak coming from the bottom of the gas tank on my Cub Cadet Riding mower. The gas tank is held on by four bolts screwed into the tank from underneath the gas tank. The tank had several cracks around one of the bolts causing a slow leak and fumes of gasoline in my garage. These fumes could have been dangerous. A fire from the fumes could have burned my house down. I contacted Cub Cadet and asked if the manufacturer had a recall on the gas tank. The technical support department said no recall on my product. My incident number with Cub Cadet was [REDACTED]. I explained that their is a design defect in the bracketing of the gas tank. The vibration of the machine caused the cracking on the bottom of the gas tank. All Cub Cadet would do for me, was to sell me a new gas tank. I believe the tank should have a rubber cushion washer under the tank to prevent the tank from cracking and causing the leak. This is a poor design and potentially dangerous to anyone with this machine.

I have owned a Cub Cadet for over 20 years without any serious problems, but this model has been nothing but trouble from the first. I’m extremely disappointed in the quality and design because it’s now requiring abnormal service continually.
I’ve attached a bag with the mulching kit.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet LTX1045 Lawn tractor with 46” cutting width. Purchased through Home Depot. The Engine is a 20 HP Kohler Courage
I was on my cub cadet LTX1045 tractor mowing my lawn. About 10 minutes into the mow, I stopped to empty out my bagger. Upon returning to the tractor, I saw a fire under the hood of the tractor through the louvers. I opened up the hood and found the front portion of the engine on fire. I quickly ran to the house to get the garden hose. The size of the fire had increased in the minute it took to get the the hose over to the tractor. The fire was burning very close to plastic gas tank. I sprayed the hose on the fire for about 2- 3 minutes before I was able to extinguish the flames. All of the plastic component on the engine were in full flame and melting. The hood portion started to melt. all the electrical wires melted and bare metal was exposed. I was lucky that I had stopped to empty the bagger in a location where I could reach with a garden hose. If I was any further away, the whole tractor would have been burned to the ground and gas tank may have exploded. The tractor was less then 6 month old an only had 24 hours on the engine.

Caller’s wife purchased a ride on lawnmower as a gift for him September 7th, 2009 however he began having problems with it around a month after receiving the mower. The front deck wheels fell off when the welding gave out while he was riding the mower. He was not injured. Caller contacted the manufacturer (no date available) but had to pay for wheels to be welded back on himself. He was not injured.
Around June 8th, 2013 the left front wheel came off the caller got off the mower on the left side which seemed the clearer but the mower dipped and caused him to twist his ankle. Caller has not contacted the manufactuter yet this time but does intend to contact them.
He does intend to go to the doctor because he thought that within the past week the soreness would heal, swelling would diminish and he would feel better than he does feel now.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet LTX 1050 riding mower, a 2012 model purchased in 2012
I purchased a 2012 Cub Cadet Model LTX 1050 lawn mower this past Spring. In May 2012the right side tie rod end came off, and the mower almost overturned on a slope. Today the left side tie rod came loose, again causing loss of steering control. There appears to be a defective design, as the tie rod clamps to a smooth shaft. There is no cotter pin, safety wire, or even a lock nut used to ensure the nut securing the tie rod does not loosen, allowing the tie rod to come off. If this had happened a few minutes earlier, I would have overturned into a ditch.

The product, in the report: riding lawn mower
(05/15/2012) The consumer was riding on lawnmower and her shoelace caught on the left side of the mower. There are nubs on the top of the deck. These nubs are used to attach the garden hose. When her shoelace got caught the consumer stated she fell down on her knees. Her knee was not bruised but it keeps popping and cracking.
06/15/20120) The consumer got on the lawnmower to go over and fed her daughter’s animals. She had a pair of bellbottom pants. The pant leg got caught on the left side of the lawnmower.
The consumer considers this to be a safety hazard because of the placement of the nubs.
The consumer stated that there should be some type of cover over the nubs.

The product, in the report: Extension spring above deck of Zero Turn Mower.
An extension spring on the deck keeps breaking (two within 3 months) which shuts off the mower deck while in motion. The piece of metal off the spring comes off the deck and is hit by the mower blades which sends flying to who knows where. I took my mower to the Cub Cadet Dealer and they said this is a reoccurring problem with these mowers and Cub Cadet has done nothing to make a better quality spring. This mower is a year old and has been under warranty, but this is a defect in the manufacturing which creates a safety hazard for anyone or anything who is near the mower when the spring breaks. The cub cadet part number is 732-04229 Extension Spring, .75 x 6.02.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet LT 1042 riding lawn mower - yellow
My son was mowing with our Cub Cadet LT 1042 riding mower. He used the mower for about 10 minutes - and then came in for a glass of water. He turned the mower off prior to coming inside. When he went back outside, the front of the mower was engulfed in flames. We put the fire out with water. The entire hood was melted. It appeared the fire was more focused on the left side of the mower as you looked at it. The hood was completely melted - and also involved the forward part of the steering wheel. It did not involve the mowing deck or the rear gas tank. The oil was checked prior to starting the mower and the mower deck was free of all debris. I have noted on the internet that this is not an isolated event with this brand of mower, and that recalls for fires involving other models have already been issued.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet Hydrostatic Zero-Turn Residential Riding Mower Engine - 23 HP Kohler Courage Pro Type: Vertical air cooled V-Twin Weight: 675 Lbs Model 23HP z-Force 48 w/Fabricated Deck
After mowing the yard, I returned the riding mower to the pole barn. Within 5 minutes as I was returning to the house I heard a hugh explosion and ran to the barn to see what had happened. The Cub Cadet riding mower was a ball of flames. Although I had a fire extinguisher at hand, I was only able to use the nearby hose to water down the surrounding area until the flames slowed down to where I was able to extinguish the lawn mower. The mower was the cause and was the so engulfed in flames that there was no mistaking it was the source of the explosion.
All surrounding objects were either burnt crisp or had melted from the heat. The roof of the barn is very elevated so there was fortunately no structural damage done.
No injuries occurred (thankfully I was not still on it), however, there was a lot of damage and destruction done in the surrounding area.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet Lawn Tractor
The consumer wanted to express his concerns about his riding lawn mower. The consumer found that the cable behind the mower continues to come loose from the base of mower. The consumer mentioned that the cable is meant to level the blade of the mower to ensure that the mower cuts evenly.
The consumer feels this cable to be hazardous as if a person had wet feet they could easily step on the cable and lose their balance, causing bodily injury. The consumer first noticed this problem in the spring of 2010. (date unknown) The consumer was able to fix the problem initially but shortly after this happened again.
The consumer called the firm after the cable became loose again and the firm referred him to the a local dealer for repairs. The firm was willing to pay for the repairs. The consumer stated that this problem has persisted nearly each summer he has owned the machine and each time the firm is willing to pay for repairs done by a licensed dealer.
The consumer also wanted to report that the welding of the right front wheel had come undone while he was on the mower in the spring of 2011. The consumer didn’t report any injury caused by the mower.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet RZT 42” Mower
Purchased a Club Cadet RZT 42 on 9/3/2011. When I got home with the machine, while unloading it from the trailor, and at an incline, the machine began smoking profusely and continued to do so for a little while after it was unloaded. It also began to sputter(want to kill). The first time I used it to mow the lawn, it would begin to smoke and want to kill whenever cutting on any slight incline. I used it twice to mow my lawn and had the same problem both times. 33 days after purchasing this machine, I contacted a service center for Club Cadet. Lemann’s Farm Supply in Donaldsonville, LA kept the machine for 3 weeks, trying to repair the faulty parts manufactured by Club Cadet/Kohler. This is what the repair report states: Tech found the motor was lacking power and using oil. Tech found the head gasket was leaking compression and there was oil coming in from the breather. Tech replaced the head gasket. He also found the reed valve was bent. Tech replaced the reed valve. When tech pulled the spark plug wire from the spark plug, he found the wire in the ignition module was broken. The module was replaced. The mower was then returned to me. The next day while mowing the lawn, the machine started to run rough and sputter, during which the extreme back pressure caused the dipstick/top to fly off of the engine about 4 ft away, causing oil to spew all over the mower and me. This happened twice and I had to stop. I brought the mower back to Lemann’s for further examination/repair. The following are the service notes for the second repair visit: Tech contacted Cub Cadet Technician and was advised to follow instructions on service bulletin #309 ? Tech removed the PTO, drive pulley, engine and oil pan, as per bulletin. Tech installed breather kit. Tech re-installed oil pan, engine, drive pulley and PTO. Tech operated mower at an incline and the mower performed normal. After getting the machine back the second time, I had trouble starting the machine and a tech came to adjust the choke. During my visit to Lemann’s, I noticed many Club Cadet mowers in for repairs. I believe Cub Cadet/Kohler are manufacturing sub standard equipment and parts, with these machines being sold at large retail stores like Lowe’s and Tractor Supply, etc., and which are dangerous to the consumer and of poor quality. I have found this with [REDACTED]mowers also. I did contact Club Cadet yesterday, 11/29/2011( Ref # [REDACTED]) with my complaints and requested my money back for this mower, which is obviously a lemon. They informed me that they cannot refund my money. After research, I found out that there are no lemon laws in place for lawn mowers. I also found that Cub Cadet lists service providers according to where the machine was purchased. If purchased from a Cub Cadet dealer, then they will service the machine. If the machine was purchased from Lowe’s or Tractor Supply Co, then the service providers were individuals with small businesses. Never have i been so disappointed in a product.

I have a Cub Cadet model 1040 lawn tractor. Manufacture date is 5/ 2011. While riding the mower, somthing underneath the mower snapped or broke and I was not able to stop the mower. The brakes and gas pedal were stuck and would not operate. I did notice a lond gold colored pin on the left side of the mower frame that appeared to be loose. I narrowly missed my 4 yr old granddaughter and ended up driving into a wooded lot being stopped by a couple of logs. Turning off the engine was the only way it was going to stop. Trying to start the unit afterward was not succesful since you have to have the brake pedal fully depressed prior to starting. Both the brake and the gas pedal would not go down further then half way. This is a MAJOR defect in the design of this unit.

I was cutting my yard and was on an incline heading down the incline. Suddenly the left side rear transaxle transmission went out and I tried to gain control going down the incline. The tractor went to the left suddenly and I was thrown off and the tractor tipped onto it’s side... The tractor/mower is a Cub Cadet RZT 50’ cut. I feel that this incident was very dangerous and could have cause severe injury or fatality if I hadn’t been throw clear of the 3 blade mower deck...

Left side transmission on my Cub Cadet RZT 50 lawn mower, looses power and will neither pull or go into reversr after only ten or fifteen minutes running time. The right side performs well.
After many attempts to fix the problem, I learned the manufacture Hydro-Gear knew about the problem being caused by poor design of the transmission. I ham in the process of replacing the transmission with a new one at a cost of over $750.00.

The product, in the report: Cub Cabet Ridng Mower
The consumer stated that her riding mower caught fire last night. She stated that the mower was in use for about 25 minutes before it ignited, catching fire from the back of the mower then the grass surrounding the mower. The plastic gas can melted from the mower and leaked which the consumer feels accentuated the fire. The consumer attempted to pour water over the mover that was located on the lakeside of her home near the deck. The water was not enough to put the fire out so the consumer and her neighbor called the fire department. Prior to the fire department arriving the consumer ran to get the phone to call the fire department from inside her home and fell spraining her wrist.
The fire department arrived 15 minutes after the consumer and her neighbor placed the call. Since the fire could not be put out by water the fire department used the consumer’s ABC fire extinguisher to put out the fire. The consumer stated that the product was damaged so badly that the nearly the entire lawn mower has melted and only one tire (back right) on the mower is intact. Luckily the consumer has not spread to the structure of her home. The consumer stated that she was not directly harmed by the product. The consumer has yet to call the manufacturer or the retailer. The consumer stated that the product has “backfired” on numerous occasions including since the first time she bought the mower.

I HAVE A CUB CADET RZT50 ZERO TURN RIDING MOWER,WHICH I PURCHASED 4/24/090. HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS UNTIL TODAY. WHEN STARTING TO MOW, YOU HAVE TO PUSH THE CONTROL ARMS FORWARD TO GO FORWARD AND BACK TO BACKWARD. THIS ALSO IS YOU STEERING CONTROL. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE CONTROLS DO NOT RESPOND AND THE MACHINE EITHER WILL NOT WANT TO GO AT ALL OR YOU ARE UNABLE TO PROPERLY CONTROL THE STEERING AS YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO. THIS UNIT HAS ONLY 126 OPERATING HOURS OF USE SINCE I PURCHASED IT NEW, HAS BEEN SERVICES AT REGULAR INTERVALS AND MAINTAINED PROPERLY, AS WELL AS BEING KEPT INSIDE WHILE NOT IN USE. WITH THE STEERING AND CONTROL NOT WORKING PROPERLY, THIS COULD CREATE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR THE OPERATOR OR ANY ONE WHO MAY BE STANDING NEAR THE MACHINE, DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO CONTROL THE OPERATION OF THE UNIT. HAVE CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER, AND AM HOPING TO GET SOME RESULTS THROUGH WARRANTY, BUT NOT SURE IF THIS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED.

I have a 2005 Cub Cadet RZT 50 (180 hrs) riding mower with independent hydrstatic transmissions. The transmissions over heat and loose power. Three incidences: First-I was cutting near my pond and the left transmission failed, which nearly sent me down the hill and into the pond. Second-I was cutting near the road and the right transmission lost power, which sent me out into the road. Luckily, my neighbor was coming home and moved over considerably or I would have slammed into his [REDACTED] truck. Third-I was cutting near my childrens playset while my son was up in the structure and the left transmission failed, which sent me into the play set and scared us both. We are so lucky that the playset is built out of 4x4’s and treated wood and I anchored it into the ground to keep it from tipping over when they swing.
