The product, in the report: Ride on Mower Tractor serial # 1A278H20272 Tractor model # T3200
This consumer is reporting her riding lawnmower just purchased May 31st, 2019. With the first use on the day of purchase the unit was not cranking over easily and she noticed fuel shooting out from exhaust port. She contacted the retailer who told her that he would be more concerned if it was diesel fuel and she should just be sure to remove the key when not in use. Once she spoke with him and started mowing with it and this particular problem seemed to solve itself until the day of the incident being reported. Sometime around June 25th, 2019 after mowing and putting the mower in her garage. she turned it off and removed key then the alarm on the unit began sounding loudly, she checked the unit traced it to the starter but when she attempted to start it again it was dead. Alarm was still sounding, starter was very hot. She disconnected the battery, however she remembered verbiage from the manual that instructed to remove spark plug wires first which she did then began disconnecting the battery, however it sparked and the motor started turning over. She pushed the unit out of her garage. She now cannot disconnect the battery because it is sparking causing the motor to continue trying to turn over. With the wires disconnected it will not run but does continue to crank as if beginning to run. She contacted the place of purchase to advise them that she had a safety issue going on but the person she was speaking with asked whether she had an extended warranty. She asked the representative when she could get it in to him but she states that he told her that it was first come, first serve at which time she said her thought was that the word “safety hazard” was not understood. The consumer called the manufacturer, she spoke in depth with their technician who provided her with case# [REDACTED] contact# 800-227-3798 She is reporting this unit as a severe fire and burn hazard and that no safety feature worked to prevent this. (1) Seat safety switch. Did not work. (2) Having to depress the break to start. Did not work. (3) Key out of ignition. Did not work. (4) No fuse blew There are no injuries being reported The manufacturer was contacted multiple times

The product, in the report: Lawn Tractor 724cc engine / 22.5 HP
Consumer reports that the lawn tractor transmission is failing again. He stated that he noticed while using it in October 2016 that the braking system had begun to not fully engage when in use. Consumer stated that it doesn’t appear to work as designed. Consumer stated that when in reverse, he took his foot off the pedal and that the tractor didn’t stop for another 4 to 5 feet.
He advised that this is the same problem he had with the two previous transmission failures. The consumer stated that this will be his third transmission failure and that if the manufacturer doesn’t refund him, he will junk the tractor out rather than sell it to another consumer.
The consumer advised that when he previously communicated with the manufacturer and attempted to get them to replace the tractor with a different model they denied his request. The consumer stated that he fears that the tractor could be hazardous to an unsuspecting operator.

The product, in the report: Ride on Mower 24hsp 42” Serial # not temped on frame the number melted from under seat
This consumer is reporting his zero turn rider lawnmower purchased from Sears in Dodge City, Kansas during the Fall of 2014.
The caller had no problems with this mower until the evening of Saturday, July 9th, 2016 when he was mowing after taking breaks between mowing his five acre property.
He had taken a break of around two hours, went back to the mower and began working again, there were no indications that there was any problem with the unit, no noise, no bad odor etc., however after only thirty minutes he felt the heat from flames due to the mower catching fire.
He did smell something but it was not a bad odor and though maybe someone was grilling.
He measured the area using gasoline leaks, burn marks on the grass beginning 15 feet from the turn, to 63 feet to where he realized that it was on fire.
He immediately got off the mower & rushed to his house to contact the fire department to extinguish the approximately seven foot high flames. The lawnmower is burned beyond repair.
He calculated that riding about 5 miles per hour that would be approximately 10 seconds from the time the leaking began until the time it burst into flames.
He is reporting this incident as severe fire, burn and explosion hazard.
There are no injuries to report.
He did contact the retailer July 11th, 2016 but he believes he may have gotten the runaround.
He contacted the manufacturer July 12th, 2016 and spoke with [REDACTED] at 1 (800) 659-5917 where he was transferred to her.
She assisted the caller with completing a report and said he would be contacted.
Caller checked with Great Bend, it’s Sears Store. He look at new Zero turn mowers. the gas tank is made with real light gauge plastic. He could push in the tank. which is not protected with any thing. from the tank to the wheels of mower.
He believes something hit the gas tank rupturing it, causing the fire,

The product, in the report: Sears craftsman 46” 19hp Briggs and Stratton riding lawnmower.
Sears 46” riding lawn mower. When blade activation is moved to off the blades stop, but when I lift the box height adjustment the blades turn on. I purchased first one in Feb. 2015. Had this issue as well as mower stopped working so I returned the mower to Sears. I told them of this safety issue. I received a new mower, same model, and used but again had this safety issue happen again. In April 2016 the mower again stopped working. I again told Sears of this safety issue and they offered to have a service repair done. I am waiting to take with this service repair person. Iwhen this issue first happened I did nothe know the blades had reactivated when I moved the height adjustment. When I drive to put the mower in my shed, a mat I had on the ground was shred up by the moving blades. This is a dangerous situation.

Re: Recall on Craftsman Lawn Mower Model 917.28990 Tufftorq Transaxle Model K46BT The two bolts that attach the transaxle to the chassis were missing. This caused the mower drive belt to fall off and the brake lever broke. These bolts cannot be seen unless the mower is taken off, and even then, you have to feel for them. While replacing the brake lever, it is necessary to take the transaxle off the tractor. At that time, I noticed the worn parts, where they attach to the rear wheels. Also, I discovered two bolts that were missing where it attaches to the chassis. An enclosed picture shows the worn areas and the place where the two bolts should have been. Also enclosed is a printout showing the worn parts and the parts that were replaced. My concern is for what could have happened if the transaxle had detached from the chassis. If the mower was in motion, the driver could have been seriously injured. I feel that a recall of this Tufftorq transaxle should occur as soon as possible. Husqvarna, who also builds Craftsman tractor, and [REDACTED], are three that I know use this transaxle. I purchased this Craftsman tractor, from Sears, April2010 and this problem occurred on July 2015; after the 5 year warranty had expired. I would appreciate a prompt response to this issue.

No one hurt Made Dec 7, 2015, sent to the company Feb 8, 2017, published by CPSC Feb 23, 2017
The product, in the report: Sears Craftsman Lawn Tractor Model # 917.203900
I purchased a Sears Craftsman Lawn Tractor Model No. 917.203900 in about March 2014. About four months after I purchased it I noticed that the transmission began to malfunction. The tractor has a transmission which is called a “Variator SD Pedal Transmission”. To operate the tractor in forward or reverse direction, it is necessary to step on a pedal with your right foot. When you remove your foot from this pedal, the lawn tractor is supposed to STOP. As the transmission continued to deteriorate the transmission began to drag. When I removed my foot from the pedal, the lawn tractor would continue to move forward or reverse whichever direction I had been going until I stomped on the brake to stop the lawn tractor. At one point before I knew that I was going to have to stomp the brake to stop, I was into some large photinia bushes before I could stop. I might have been scratched up a bit, but at least it was only bushes I ran into. What if there had been a child or pet in front of me? For this reason I felt I am obligated to report this product to you so you might consider a recall. I called Sears explaining what had happened and they sent a technician out. Upon inspection, the technician determined the lawn tractor needed a new transmission. He ordered the new transmission and came back to install it.
Now, beyond belief, just over a year later, I am experiencing the same problem. The Sears technician has inspected my lawn tractor and determined it needs another new transmission. I have talked to and emailed Sears describing my concerns about safety of this lawn tractor and the fact it has burned up two transmissions in less than two years, and all they have agreed to do is replace the transmission again. My request to exchange this lawn tractor for one that does not use this particular transmission has been flatly denied. The transmission part # is [REDACTED] and my most recent repair order # is [REDACTED].
The new transmission has arrived at my home and the Sears Tech. is supposed to be out to repair it on December 11, 2015. If at all possible, I would like to have someone from CPSC visit my home and see exactly what my concerns are regarding this lawn tractor. If necessary I would be willing to postpone the repair until someone from your agency could see the dangers this lawn tractor exposes the operator and anyone or anything around them to. I will attach the emails I have had with Sears to the bottom of this report.
Thank You, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Sears Craftsmen 30” Riding Mower with Briggs & Stratton 13.5HP engine
I sent this email to sears as soon as I noticed gasoline on my garage floor. Name:[REDACTED] Comments: I have a Craftsmen 30” Riding Mower with a Briggs & Stratton 13.5HP I C Engine with Automatic Drive. The mower Model = 28R707, Type = 1120 E1 & Code = 030513 ZE. When I went out to my garage, I smelled gasoline and noticed a small amount of gas had dripped onto the floor and was still dripping from the sears mower plastic fuel tank. I have moved the mower out of the garage and put a tin can under the tank to catch the fuel still dripping (slowly) from the tank. I told Sears that I was aware that this mower was part of a class action lawsuit about a year ago, what I wanted to know IMMEADIATELY) was IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS MOWER FOR FUEL DRIPPING ON REAR /TRANSAXLE AND POTENTIALLY CAUSING A FIRE?? I asked them to please advise if there is or is not a recall. SERAS RESPONDED WITH THE DUMBEST “CANNED RESPOSE” THAT TOTALLY AVOIDED THR QUESTION. They responded with” Good Morning Valued Customer, Thank you for contacting Sears.com. We regret you are experiencing difficulties with your mower. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide the information you have requested. Our product support specialists are not certified technicians and do not have the expertise to answer technical repair questions. We recommend that you review the troubleshooting guide of your owner’s manual. I WOULD LIKE TO FORMALLY NOTIFY YOU OF THIS PRODUCT FAILURE, THAT COULD EASILY CAUSE A POTENTIAL FIRE PROBLEM AND/OR INJURY OR DEATH. If gas drips onto a hot motor anything from simple fire, to loss of life can happen; since the tank hold about 2 gallons of gasoline. Can you (or I) force Sears to answer the recall question &/or disclose if these tanks have leaked in the past??? \As an accredited auditor for about 25 years, I know that reporting “near miss” is just as important as reporting an accident after the fact. Near miss is usually a warning of things to come.

The product, in the report: 21.0 HP lawn tractor with 46” Mower
We purchased a new 21-hp Craftsman riding lawn tractor from sears. THe first time I started the engine and put it into gear, there was a terrible grating sound coming from the rear axle. After driving the tractor 25 feet and parking it in my garage I turned off the engine and lifted up the seat to see if I could spot an obvious problem. I found that the box which holds the battery in place had broken. the box, and the battery were now resting on top of a pully/fan above the rear axle.
When I pulled the battery out, I found that the bottom of the battery was all wet. The pully/fan that the battery was resting on had rubbed through the plastic box and the wall of the battery. My hands were covered with battery acid. This resulted in a minor chemical burn with itching and redness on my hands.
This product needs to be redesigned with a more durable battery retention system and the battery needs to be relocated to a spot where if the retention system fails, the battery will not fall onto moving parts.

The product, in the report: Riding Lawn Mower
Incident Description Sears Craftsman Mower (Model 536.270280) fuel tank started to leak gas on floor of garage. Gas tank part number is 7601040. I first noticed that garage smelled of gas, but it took me two days to see a puddle of gas on the floor of the garage under the mower. I removed and drained gas tank and filled it with water to check for leaks. Leak appears to be coming from the hole where Bolt (no. 23) holds tank to mower frame. I am wondering if this is related to other Murray manufactured mower fuel tank leaks reported in the news.

I purchased a riding lawmower for my husband as ours was getting up in age and this one with model number #247288810, seerial number #1C231B40023. Purchased on June 1, 2011 and delivered a week later. Due to the rains in St. Louis, MO he did not use the mower and then the rear bagger fell off, the seat shifts and almost fell off. the bagger came off in one trying to mow the law on 18 occasions. technicans came out and he did not know what to do. Whey would you place a bumjer on the rear bagger. When we comparied our two lawn mowers, what a difference. This needs help as the mechanical items on it do not work. then our sone-in-law tried, it and fell off, what if he were killed on it. I then had our engineer a medical degreed individual with a BS and a Masters and h said the same things, the rear bagger is not properly affixed to the mower and needs correction. He even idnicated to us that we have a leom and I tried over a rear to have it worked on and each time the service gusy did not know what to do. they have no knowledge of engineering, etc. So here we have a dude and cannot use it. Kindly recall this item for checks on it before someone has a serious accident on it, possibly dead. Thanks.
[Additional information from the submitter:] Also, regardless if there is one or several complaints, all should be legally taken as such. When an individual falls off and the bagger falls off each time utilized, there is a mfg issue.
