The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Bad Boy Zero Turn Mower

I have investigated two accidents now involving Bad Boy zero turn mowers. One of these accidents involved a consumer and one involved an older gentleman that mowed yards. In both instances the accidents were the result of the mowers running over and onto the victims. I have inspected both mowers and they do not meet the requirements of the ANSI B71 standards to: ANSI B71.4-2004 indicates in Section 4.5.8 “Operator-presence controls” and specifically paragraph 4.5.8.1 “Ride-on units and ride-on turf tractors” that: “A means shall be provided that automatically stops or disengages the traction drive when the operator leaves the normal operator position.” The forseeability of this type of accident is demonstrated by the Appendix to ANSI B71.4 which indicates with respect to paragraph 4.5.8.1 that: “The requirement for a traction drive Operator Presence Control (OPC) is intended to address run-over type accidents associated with machine movement when the operator leaves the normal operator position. This requirement does not allow the machine traction drive to be operational when the operator is out of the normal operator position.” The design of both machines, unlike many other manufacturers, does not require the travel control levers to be in neutral and the park brake applied before the operator can dismount. This allows a travel lever to be contacted and moved from neutral as the operator dismounts or is getting off the mower such that it moves in a fast turn and can knock the operator down and run up on them.
