The product, in the report: Miracle Gro Organic Raised Bed and Garden soil.

I bought 5 bags of Miracle Gro Organic Raised Bed and Garden Soil from The Homedepot in annapolis Maryland. I opened them when I got home and began to fill the raised garden beds I just bought, as I broke up the soil, I nearly cut myself on a razor blade that was inside one of the clumps of dirt from the bag. I contacted the store to warn them, they were less than helpful. I looked up other reviews of the product from my area, I found review after review showing bits of plastic and metal debris contained in the soil (none of which is organic like the bag claims).

The product, in the report: Miracle Gro AeroGarden see photos for more!

Purchased Miracle-Gro Countertop Garden #5001783 Date Code 3417.

When repositioning the unit water spilled into base. Base has drain holes to prevent a potential problem but the area where the circuit boards are located do not. Water accumulated around the circuit boards and the unit caught fire melting the base and damaging the surface where the unit was sitting. I contacted the company they first told me the unit was only warranted for 1 year but they needed the purchase information, they also requested the serial number and date code. When I provided the serial and date code I advised them the date code on the circuit board was later than the date code on the bottom of unit! Here is their response: Unfortunately, taking the garden apart completely voids the warranty all together. I will not be able to replace the garden for you. We can offer you a new Harvest for $65.00 plus tax. If you would like to order the new garden please call us at 1.800.476.9669 as we cannot take payment information over the phone.

My point is, this is a fire hazard, I would have been willing to purchase a circuit board and base but if that is their response I feel others have had this problems and everyone needs to be aware of the fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Potting Soil

Caller stated that the Miracle Glo potting soil spontaneously combusted in her vehicle causing her total loss of vehicle. She stated that she was driving her vehicle when she saw smoke she tried to open the trunk but it would not open. The fire department was called out and they pulled down the rear seat and noticed that the soil had caused the incident. They advised her that the soil should not have been in the vehicle for the duration of time. The container was destroyed the fire department used some device to contain the fire.

Caller stated that there is no warning label indicating that the soil can cause combustion if it is stored in the trunk of her vehicle. She stated that the product was stored in a car for about a week.

(5/3) The manufacturer was contacted and they advised her that someone would contact her. She was given a claim#.

The product, in the report: Garden Soil for Palm, Cactus & Citrus

I purchased 5 bags of garden soil in Home Depot. In one of them - Miracle Grow Garden Soil for Palm, Cactus & Citrus / 032247305136 / when I spread it under the tree I found a syringe .

I saved the bag and the syringe and informed the Miracle Grow company about it too.

I don’t know what was in the syringe. May be I was exposed to some bacteria or viruses or some toxins. I would like you to tell me where I should send the syringe and the bag in order to find out.

But I do have a problem with the whole situation. There are many reports of fruits and vegetables being contaminated with Listeria and Salmonella. Now I have an idea why. All medical and biological hazard waste has to be incinerated but obviously that is not a case. I found an intact syringe in the bag of garden soil. It means that this syringe wasn’t incinerated. It was just mixed with the garden soil that people use for the growing fruits. Who knows what else they are putting in their product.

The product, in the report: Miracle Gro Potting Soil

I am a Certified Fire Investigator with the ATF and recently investigated a fatal fire that was caused by the ignition of potting soil (specifically Miracle Gro potting soil). The container was plastic, half-filled with dried out potting soil on a covered balconey, sitting adjacent to wood siding and below a window. Aided by wind, cigarettes that had been discarded in the container ignited the potting soil and the plastic container, which then spread to the siding and into the adjacent apartment. This fire spread throughout a 12 unit apartment building and resulted in the death of an occupant who was not able to escape in time.

I have been a fire investigator since 2007 and have encountered multiple fires caused by the ignition of structures after dried out potting soil or peat moss was ignited when cigarettes were discarded within plant containers. In talking to victims, everyday average people, and even other fire investigators, this fire causation is not widely known. The publication Fire Findings did a study on this phenomenon in its Spring 2009 issue, Vol. 17, No. 2.

I believe that lives could be saved and millions of dollars of fire damages could be avoided every year if warning labels were present on bags of potting soil, peat moss, and other similar soil amendments. The general public is not aware of the fire hazards associated with these products and needs to be educated about the dangers.
