  1. No one hurt

Made Feb 16, 2024, sent to the company Feb 22, 2024, published by CPSC Mar 7, 2024

The product, in the report: Lettuce Grow Hydroponic Farmstand is a white, adjustable height indoor/outdoor food growing system made from ocean bound BPA free plastic recovered from local coastal communities that is supposedly FDA approved, food safe, and California Prop 65 compliant (according to the company). I purchased a 36 plant system with 5 glow lights but only had 30 plants set up with 4 glow lights. The Glow light rings are designed and sold to fit the farmstand. The entire system is contained within four square feet.

I own an indoor vertical farming system with LED light kits that are designed specifically for the product, called the Lettuce Grow Farmstand and Glow Rings. It is designed to be self-contained, with timers for both the lights and the water pump, so that the water is pumped up through a vertical pipe to the top of the farmstand, then filters out and down to water the plants. The only interaction with the farmstand occurs when you plant, harvest, or do the twice yearly cleaning and restocking of all plants they recommend. The pump turns on once an hour for 15 minutes of watering, and the LED Glow Lights are on for 16 hours a day per the instructions provided. Otherwise there is not a common use of the product in the conventional sense. Today as I sat at my dining room table working on my laptop, I smelled what I can only describe as a hot glue gun burning. I went all over the place investigating, inside and out. I came back inside and noticed the lights were off on the farmstand but the water pump was working. As I began to dissemble the stand I found that two of the Glow Ring wires had caught fire and melted together, then began to melt the internal, vertical pipe that carries the water up and out to the plants. No injuries occurred.

The product, in the report: Lettuce Grow Glow Rings, indoor LED growing lights for Lettuce Grow Farmstand hydroponic garden tower.

Glow Ring LED lighting for Lettuce Grow hydroponic garden tower shorted out with burned/melted plastic discovered. Product being used as directed indoors, after several years of service (but still well within warranty period). Lights shorted out and presented with burning plastic smell. On investigation, discovered melted/burned plastic. Have previously had issues with lights shorting out due to moisture intrusion to connectors. Luckily was at home at the time and was able to unplug the lights to prevent further damage.

  3. No one hurt

Made Jun 3, 2022, sent to the company Jun 9, 2022, published by CPSC Jun 27, 2022

The product, in the report: Lettuce Grow Glow Rings for the Lettuce Grow Farmstand hydroponic growing system. The Farmstand is 2X2 feet square by 4 to 6 feet tall. The issue is the LED grow lights that fit between each section. In the Facebook Lettuce Grow group there are frequent complaints of this.

I have the Glow Rings from Lettuce Grow. At least a couple of times a week people say their lights have shorted out and they come home or are at home and smell of burning plastic. I have a set of these rings on my Lettuce Grow Farmstand. The rings are only to be used indoors and ALL reports have been properly used. It’s a great product, but very expensive (around $500) for a full set of 6. The Farmstand is a hydroponic growing tower for produce and flowers. It has a teardrop shape barrel that holds 20 gallons water and nutrients with a pump at the bottom. It holds up to 6 Sections that hold 6 plants each. The Glow Rings are LED light rings that fit between the sections. The electrical connectors are “waterproof” and inside the tower where the water rains down on them. The shorts and burning seem to be confined to the outside wire connectors.
