  1. No one hurt

Made Jun 10, 2021, sent to the company Jul 13, 2021, published by CPSC Jul 27, 2021

The product, in the report: Green (dyed) bamboo stakes (various lengths)

The consumer said there are countless Chinese companies exporting these green bamboo stakes into the U.S. He has been using the product for at least 10 years.

The consumer purchased a large quantity of these stakes (various sizes) to use in his garden, but returned them after discovering the hazard. His research has confirmed that these stakes are colored with a toxic dye known as malachite green.

He believes 4’ & 6’ lengths, are most common sizes in the U.S. The dye does not adhere well and came off all over his hands during use. He searched the Internet and found a site where a person was able to get a copy of the MSDS Sheet, which confirmed the hazards.

His concern is that the dye can get on consumer’s hands, get into their foods, when used for gardening and put consumer’s at risk of ingesting the dye. He also cited that the NIH has done decades of studies on this dye, confirming that it’s carcinogenic and teratogenic.

The FDA banned this dye for food use in 1983 and Canada has banned it as well.

He returned all of the ones he had back to the dealer. The consumer said that the dealer he purchased his from indicated that these are sold all over the country by many retailers.

Lastly, he noted that the only function for this dye is cosmetic.
