The product, in the report: 16” electric chainsaw
I purchased a Craftsman chainsaw and was reading the instruction manual before using it. I noted on page 1, item 3 was noted to be a “chain brake”. I attempted to engage the chain brake with the saw not running, but there was no position in which I could get the noted chain brake to stop the chain from moving. Investigating, I found that the chain brake is not a chain brake at all but simply a hand guard. I attempted to call customer service for Craftsman and after five calls, I finally got someone to attempt to answer my question about the functioning of the chain brake. their only response was to return it to the store at which i purchased it. However, there is no way for the chain brake to move as it is bolted firmly to the chainsaw case. I also tried texting Craftsman and they claimed that I had written down the wrong model number, even after I took a picture of the front of the manual. (Model CMECS600). I attempted to contact the office of the President of Stanley/Craftsman and was stonewalled there also. This product is deceptively designed and labeled and could harm someone that did not pay attention to the fact that the saw does not come with a operable chain brake.

The product, in the report: gas powered chainsaw
The submitter said he powered the chainsaw to check if it worked and when he went to power it off the chainsaw would not shut off. The submitter said the turn off switch failed and he had to use the manual choke to shut it off.
The submitter said he has checked it a few times during the past 2 months and each time the chainsaw fails to shut off.
The submitter contacted the retailer, Sears and notified them of the safety hazard. The submitter was informed that the chainsaw is not recalled and they could not assist him.
The submitter noticed that the chainsaw was made by MTD and he may contact the firm to notify them.
The submitter believes the chainsaw is unsafe and should be investigated.
Please note It appears that saw chips from using the saw got into the kill switch, preventing the switch from functioning properly - Switch is not enclosed Dangerous design flaw as, all it take is on wood chip to render the kill switch inoperative

The product, in the report: 18 inch 42cc Craftsman Gas Chainsaw.
The Craftsman gas chainsaw overheats and sparks are created while cutting wood. There is the gas supply just above the sparks and the chain oil dripping out just below the sparks. I do not believe this chainsaw that has been recalled is safe.
This same model chainsaw has been recalled due to fire hazards, however the serial number of this saw is not within the dates of recall. This Craftsman saw was manufactured on July 1st according to the serial number while the recall included all saws through June.

The product, in the report: 20 in chainsaw as pictured on your recall page.
While using Your product On site I sat it down to clear some brush When I look back there were flames At first just smoldering But as the brush nearby caught fire I had to run to grab a hose By the time I came back to Put out the fire The chainsaw was ruined Along with about a 3-foot patch Of the yard that I was working in I cleaned up the area as well as I could I just took the chainsaw And dropped it in the garbage can So what do I do now That I no longer have the product ? There were no injuries . My main concern was if it had spread to the house.

The product, in the report: 18” gas chainsaw
The consumer says when he bought the unit, he opened it up and started using it. He turned it to the side and noticed gasoline was all over his hands and on the chain saw. The gas cap was not tightening up. He contacted the retailer who would send him a replacement gas cap. He received the new cap that was working fine. This occurred in August 2009. He says he was going to use the chain saw this weekend. He noticed that the gas cap is not tightening up again. He says it seems to be expanding. He contacted the retailer again who told him they have not heard of any problems. The consumer feels that the retailer was well aware of this problem when he brought it to their attention in 2009.
UPDATE:
Consumer called Sears Parts and was told he would have to buy a new cap since this was out of the 90 day warranty. He bought new one at $12 plus change. 2/6/12 New gas cap has been modified from original one and replacement cap sent in 2009. New cap has 1/8” or more lip on bottom of cap that makes it fight tight
