The product, in the report: Ryobi Expand-It Tiller attachment
I purchased a Ryobi Expand-It Tiller/Cultivator from Home Depot on Feb. 5th, received on Feb. 6th. Upon assembling the unit model #RYTIL66 I noticed the “C” tine was incorrectly manufactured being mounted into the wrong holes placing the C tine at a 45° to the D tine, it should be at 90° this will cause the C & D tines to strike the ground at the same time. If the tiller hits something hard such as a rock or tree root it will cause the tiller to jump on the left side and potentially flip. I contacted Ryobi and they sent a replacement C tine. The replacement is also incorrect. They then sent a replacement B tine. Nothing wrong with that or the one that came with the tiller. I was then told it was a distributer issue. I contacted Gardner Inc (distributer) they stated they only send out what they are told to by Ryobi. Again I contacted Ryobi. I received an email from [REDACTED] (technician for Techtronic the manufacturer). I sent [REDACTED] the requested photos. A week later, no response. I emailed [REDACTED] asking if he received the photos and is there a resolution. He called my cell phone and stated “We ALL looked at the photos and there is nothing wrong.” I sent [REDACTED] another photo showing the C tine and the related D tine while off the tiller. I told [REDACTED] that they ALL should look again and tell me nothings wrong. Later that day I received a call from [REDACTED] (manager for Techtronic). He asked if he can send me a blow up diagram of the tiller and we can discuss the issue. I received the diagram and after comparing the diagram to the photos he [REDACTED] forwarded by [REDACTED] [REDACTED] agreed the C tine was manufactured incorrectly. He asked to give him some time and he would contact me accordingly. I received the second call from [REDACTED], he said “I talked to our engineers and they say it will work fine the way it is”. I told [REDACTED] that he knows as well as I do the item has a manufacturing defect and the engineers need to get their heads out. I then asked [REDACTED] who above him I can talk to in regard to this potentially hazardous tiller. He stated “I’m it, I’m the end of the line”. I called Home Depot and told them about the issue and said I can come to the store and open boxes to see if a replacement was available that was made correctly. I went to the store and a returns representative and I opened 2 new units from their shelves. BOTH had the “C” tine mounted incorrectly. The garden department manager was called. He agreed on first sight the product was defective and was potentially a safety risk, he also agreed the 2 from the shelves were defective. My money was refunded and he stated he would put the word out to Home Depot Stores regarding the RYTIL66’s as having a manufacturers defect. In dealing with Ryobi and Techtronic for nearly the whole month I was yelled at by the switchboard operator, hung up on, left on hold for over 30 minutes 2 times, they refused to transfer me to management. Ryobi/Techtronic have a total disregard for consumer safety regarding this product and are doing nothing but blowing smoke. This item should be removed from the shelves IMMEDIATELY! I have NO issue with Home Depot, they were very accommodating and concerned. I also have no issue with Gardner Inc as they are a middleman so to speak. I looked through Home Depot’s 1 Star reviews online for this tiller. I can attribute nearly all of these complaints to the defective C tine including jumping, twisted shafts, seized tines cracked or broken drive casings, back & arm pain etc... Most of these complaints happened during the first USA and many within 5 minutes of operation.
