The product, in the report: 22 inch. 5.5HP Snowblower

I purchased a snowblower from my neighbor. It is a Yard Machines model #: 31A-3BAD700. Serial #: 1J185I10210. 000001. The tires were flat. I tried inflating with a hand pump but was not sucessful. On Oct 2 I removed the wheels and took it to an auto shop, (Excellent Auto). When they were working to inflate I heard an explosion. Two people came running out with their hands badly cut and bleeding. They told me to leave because they needed to get to the emergency room because the wheel had exploded. I was very upset and talked to a person that said he thought there was a recall involving snowblowers. I went on-line and found the MTD hotline and called. They indicated there was a recall and took my information. They said they will send me a repair kit. I told them that two people were injured. They said they would have to file an incident report themselves. Today, I gave the phone # and my case number to the shop owner who was hurt. His name is [REDACTED]. Phone : [REDACTED]. I feel terrible about this and felt I should report this incident. My case # with MTD is: [REDACTED].

  3. No one hurt

Made Mar 15, 2017, sent to the company Apr 28, 2017, published by CPSC May 12, 2017

The product, in the report: NEW, Yard Machines 28” clearing width, 4cycle electric/recoil snow-thrower, 15”x5”, 64EG, Model: 31AH64EG700, Serial: 1F265B10193.

I used my MTD Yard Machines 28” Snow Thrower twice this winter after purchasing it online and having it delivered. It worked fine the first snowfall, no problems. 14Mar17 I used it the second time and while clearing snow and ice the discharge chute blew-off and flew wild and a Vesuvius of snow and debris blasted straight up and about with considerable force, hitting me about the head and shoulders and landing on property and vehicles near-by. I had to attach the chute when delivered and I followed the instructions precisely, had I erred? I reattached the chute as instructed and assured it was correct and secured with its three clips and I cleared more snow ... cautiously. It blew-off again some minutes later!! I was wearing face and eye protection both times and had I not been wearing it I’d have received facial and eye injuries, at least. Someone’s going to be seriously injured with this crummy design! The chute is attached with three flimsy plastic clips to a very narrow plastic track on which the chute revolves. The force of discharging snow, ice and whatever vibrates the chute and the thing just comes off and flies into the air, wild, and all the material comes straight up, flung with force by the snow thrower impeller. This is lousy design, period. The rest of the machine is terrific. This is a true Achilles Heel and dangerous to consumers. I’d fire the designer and the guy who approve the machine for sale! I have video clip from surveillance camera showing one blow-off.

Made Dec 29, 2015, sent to the company Feb 2, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 18, 2016

The product, in the report: Two-Stage Compact Snow Throwers

The consumer purchased this snow thrower used. He noticed that 1 tire appeared be low when it was purchased.

12/16/2015: The consumer was in his own garage and filling the tire by using an air compressor, when the plastic rim suddenly burst. The consumer received several lacerations to his left hand, which sustained the brunt of the damage. The tips of the fingers on his right hand were slightly damaged, but his left hand was bleeding. After the incident, the consumer cleaned his wound and applied a bandage/pressure to his left hand. His left middle finger sustained the severest laceration.

At the time of the incident, the consumer had removed the tire to inflate it, but he stated that it would have been the tire on the right side, if one were standing behind the snow thrower.

12/17/2015: The consumer went to Western Maine Oxford Hills Family Practice and had his hand examined. The consumer was sent to another department for x-rays. The doctor initially thought that the consumer’s left thumb was broken, but it was not. The doctor tried to administer pain medication, but the consumer declined. The consumer spent approximately 45 minutes total at the doctor and was released the same day. The doctor told the consumer if the hand did not improve or if his pain worsened, to follow up with a doctor.

The consumer cannot move his thumb and has severe pain in his left hand. The swelling has decreased in his left hand since the incident. As of 12/29/2015, the consumer can bend his thumb, but he still doesn’t have full strength in his thumb. He said that simply holding a spoon, hurts.

The consumer believes that he called the manufacturer the same day of the incident. He noted that he called-out from work the day following the incident. The consumer said that he told the rep. (name unknown) what happened and that person made arrangements to send the consumer replacement rims. The consumer received a letter, which indicated that the firm’s Customer Service Dept. notified their Risk Management Dept. ([REDACTED], Director of Risk Mgt., MTD Inc., Tel: [REDACTED]). The consumer has left 2 messages for [REDACTED], but he has not received a return call or been able speak with him. This may be due to the holidays.

NOTE: The consumer had never used the snow thrower prior to the incident. The consumer received the replacement tires, per CPSC Recall # 07-003, which are now made out of metal and he installed them himself. However, when he tried to use the snow thrower it did not work. The consumer said that the Augers are worn out.
