The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Jan 25, 2016, sent to the company Feb 2, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 18, 2016

The product, in the report: Sears Craftsman Snow Thrower.

While using my Sears Craftsman two stage snow thrower model#536.881800 the product burst into flames in and around the primer area. I immediately tried to shut down the thrower even though flames were coming out of the product. I eventually managed to put out the fire and stopped using the product. I called Sears and was told that I could file a report but I would have to pay for a tech. to diagnose and repair the product after I brought the product into the shop at Sears. The item weighs about 260 pounds assembled so that was not an option for me. I am a senior and not about to attempt that feat.

The product, in the report: Sears Craftsman snow thrower model 536.881851 with Briggs and Stratton engine 15A114 0342 E1 050902 FD

In Dec of 2013 my wife was clearing our driveway with our Sears Craftsman snow thrower, model 536.881851. (The engine plate shows 15A114 0342 E1 and 050902 FD) She had been working on the driveway for about 10 minutes. The machine stalled. She attempted to restart it and it caught on fire. We put the fire out with a fire extinguisher and when the unit cooled down, we stored it back in the barn. We received so much snow last winter that I could not get it back out of the barn to have it looked at until after the winter was over. This fall I attempted to see about getting it repaired and found that it was on a recall list from the CPSC and the reason was that it could catch fire. I called Sears and they said that I needed to call Briggs and Stratton directly. When I called them, they say that they have to recall for a machine that old and they can not do anything for a unit that is eight years out of warranty.

The product, in the report: Sears Craftsman Snowblower

My Sears snowblower suddenly caught fire during its use on 2/13/14. It was not being refueled nor was it primed. It had stalled and when my son-in-law started it up he saw a flame come out the exhaust which then caught the machine on fire.

I contacted Sears who contacted Briggs and Stratton. Briggs and Stratton came over to the house twice to inspect the snow blower and take pictures.

I’ve asked Sears to find out how many other snow blowers suddenly caught fire but they have not responded to my request.
