The product, in the report: Sears 3 stage snow blower

I purchased a Sears snow blower in October 2017, during it’s 1st use in January, I noticed gas on the driveway. I looked for any loose hoses but could not find any during the next 2 months I would siphon gas after each use from the gas tank because I didn’t want the gas leaking in my garage. In February I called sears for a warranty repair on the gas tank and chute control mechanism (the chute stopped working). The repair technician arrived and replaced the chute mechanism & confirmed it was the gas tank that was leaking (from a seam). He said I need a new gas tank & one will be delivered to my house in a few days. I received a call (on 3/28) indicating the replacement tank is not available and sears cannot tell me when it will arrive and they will not schedule a service technician until a gas tank is available. I was told whenever it does arrive, to please call and they will send someone out to replace it.

The product, in the report: Craftsman 5.5 horse power 24” 4-cycle 3-speed snow blower model number 247.88255 part number from the owners manual is 634-0232A. Used for throwing snow. Owners manual is dated 7/21/2005.

On Tuesday Nov 14, 2017 mt father was helping to prepare my snowblower that is stored at his house over the summer by inflating the tires that had gone flat. He took the tires to the local gas station to use their inflator. The tire exploded. The explosion propelled the rim/tire cutting his hand and thrusting the rim down onto his foot. He then fell to the ground from the explosion and the tire came to rest 200 feet away from the explosion. We are lucky the tire/rim did not catch him in the forehead. The force of the rim on his foot cut through his leather shoe, gashed the top of his foot that is still not fully healed and fractured his toes in 3 places, . The gash was so wide they could not stitch it it closed so my parents have been forced to change the dressing on the foot regularly to prevent infection and promote healing. My parents had to purchase a walker to assist him with his balance as he could not place pressure on his foot/toe. We are fortunate that by chance his sister was at the same gas station pumping gas saw/heard what happened and was able to contact my mom and take him to the local urgent care. Upon the physicians reviewing my dad’s injuries it was determined that he needed more care for his foot than they could provide so an ambulance was dispatched to take him to the local hospital for emergency care. The doctors at the emergency care were considering the use of pins in the toe but the location of the injuries would not allow that so them had to immobilize his foot. He has not been able to get around. My dad actually felt bad that he ruined the tire and rim and actually apologized to me for the accident. It was not until I started researching replacement tires for the Craftsman 4-cycle 3 speed snow blower model number 247.88255 and tire part number 634-0232A from the owners manual did I realize it was not his fault. This is a known issue and the faulty product has produced horrible injuries to my dad. His suffering is not just from pain, but also anguish in my elderly parents having to provide this extra care for is healing and the cost financially for his care.

The potential danger would be fire/explosion (gasoline powered unit with fuel tank less than 6 inches away) and/or electrocution (unit is made of metal with a metal handle).

I primed snowblower to start unit, pulled starter cord, unit burst into flames I found out about a recall on Briggs & Stratton on your website, called the Sears number listed and was told my unit was not included in the recall even though it was sold during the time frame specified and serial # falls within the range. I was told 12 E series is not included in the recall. My model is 12 E 1140268E 1 DOM 040804FE. I suggest expanding the recall to include the 12E series if it is not currently included. Please let me know if this unit is part of the current recall.
