Yesterday after mowing my lawn as I was washing it off it burst into flames in the front. I quickly hosed this area and put the fire out. This was a Cub Cadet LTX 1050 serial number 13WQ93AP009 with a 24 HP Kohler engine model number PS-KT735-3012 serial number 4405112404. This mower is always cleaned after use and only has 121 hour on it. There is damage to the mower. My concern is if I had put this mower in the garage after mowing it could have burned the garage down. I am going to contact Cub Cadet about this issue. Reading the web this has happened to numerous people. The mower caught fire.

The product, in the report: 2012 Cub Cadet premium Series garden tractor. Model GTX2100
Purchased new in June this year. Cub Cadet Garden Tractor Model GTX2100. It had 31 hours the first time the hood melted off. It got a second hood and heat shield modification. It melted the hood off again. It is now getting its third hood installed (under warranty) and they’ve stated they will Not refund my money. It emits an unpleasant odor from the engine bay while mowing, and disfigures the hood horribly. The oil drain line that rests beside the engine is also melting.

The product, in the report: Cub Cadet Lawn and Garden Tractor with 54 inch mowing deck
Was mowing with 2009 Cub Cadet Model SLTX 1054 when steering failed. The failed steering almost caused a serious accident which could have resulted in the mower going into a large pond. I disassembled the steering assembly to find a flange made of oilite material that had ‘ovaled’ out due to absence of lubrication causing the pinion gear to lose contact with the steering gear. Teeth were damaged on steering gear which resulted in steering lock-up and inability to turn mower to the left. When attempts were made to turn to left, a popping noise was heard which was caused by the gear slipping. Flange has no lubrication point/access and dirty conditions would prevent this type of fitting from being an acceptable application for it’s intended purpose.
This is a serious safety hazard since control of the lawn mower is prudent for safe operation. I have found research that shows Cub Cadet is aware of this issue and most dealers stock parts to repair it. Parts are NOT redesigned and the same flawed parts that one buys for repair will fail again because flange is not a sealed bearing in a housing which would prevent this from occurring.
Pictures of failed parts are available if needed.

Text of Consumer’s Complaint:
June 15th, 2012 To whom it may concern
After having Axel’s seals serviced and fixed at Baribeau Implement in Dec 2011, being under warranty. They refused to fix it properly and returned it to me very dirty and the brake cable hanging down, they may have untimed the timed drive blade system, because as soon as I drove the tractor for the first time in the end of April, as this was to be the first grass cut of the year, the blades under the deck made a loud, loud crash when I went to disengage the blades. The crashing noise was so loud, it basically blew my Ear-Drums and I almost jumped/flew off the tractor and thought what the Heck??? I immediately stopped and shut the tractor down. Check it out and saw nothing. Got back on it and started it back up, then went to engage the blades again, it then slammed together again with a loud, loud crash and I almost jumped off it again, and then realized the blades were crushed and a huge 5 foot to 6 foot spark flew out also underneath the tractor. I was so shaken up at this point and perplexed I then put the tractor away. I called a friend and asked him if he could just stand there and look at it , while I start it up, to see what or why it’s doing this. He came over that evening and watched as I started it up and engaged the blades. He too, jumped back about 2 feet as sparks flew out underneath. It totally startled him and he too was in amazement by the crashing noise and the sparks flying in a 5 foot trail. At this point I was almost in tears, thinking I wrecked a brand new tractor engine that I just paid close to $1500.00 for. The next morning I called Ace Home Center to ask them, if they now work on Cub Cadet Tractors as I had recently seen them selling them. They said yes, but I should have it brought in to have it checked out. I said yes, and asked if they could have someone come out here to pick it up. They said yes, and at that point i also asked how much it would be for the trip charge to pick up and deliver as it is under warranty. They said it would be about 2 weeks to get it back because they have 3 others before me to fix. They then also noticed how the blades smash together and they also called Cub Cadet as to why ????????????????????? And that in order for a resident to fix this problem, the resident or consumer would literally have to chain up the front end to the rafters in the garage of their residence to even be able to fix it properly every time the blades are a hair off of their timed mark. As, you cannot fix it properly as the blades also have to be balanced. The blades are so nicked up, one would also have to order new blades every season in order to keep them aligned and balanced. It also appears to play on the engagement of blades and the brake cable that stops the blades. In layman’s terms, if it isn’t set properly to, it may also put wear and tear on the engine’s performance. Currently, I have to slow the rpm’s of the tractor and turn off key, then dis-engage the blades when the engine is OFF. This will continue until Cub Cadet sends a new deck they say is on Back order. The new deck was to be here at Ladysmith Ace HomeCenter for the week of June13th 2012. As I spoke to a man named [REDACTED] today in the sales dept, he got somewhat mean as i asked him again and again when the new deck would be arriving at Ladysmith Ace Homecenter. I said then I would like it here by July 1st, he said Lady are you threatening me, I said No, I see I may have to get a lawyer if this is the case. I then again stated that the fellow I spoke to, in their sales dept, was a [REDACTED] and a [REDACTED], 2 weeks ago and they said it should be here in Ladysmith, WI around June 13th. He then repeated that it is on back order at least 3 times during discussion. I then repeated to him, look it already has had a Axel problem and now a blade problem. I understood at this point I was not making any headway as to when it would arrive in Ladysmith, WI at Ace Homecenter soon, and it now seemed as if they are stalling and basically told me, to just keep servicing it. That was his exact words. Beside every time I have called their, they make you wait on phone anywhere from 20-45minutes to even get to speak with someone, they have done this to [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] at L.S Homecenter also, and I even said to [REDACTED] they are rude to make you stay on the line that long, when you too, have work to do. I even mentioned to them, that I would drive to OHIO to pick it up, if they’re available two weeks ago. They said it would be here around June 13th, 2012. At that point Ace Homecenter returned my tractor home here, because my grass was at the 2 foot high mark. And I would soon need a [REDACTED] soon. We have what’s called Tough-Turf up here, not like Ohio where it barely grows and yards are flat and no elevation. Last, I worked for [REDACTED] for 5 years, from 1989-1993. I was a machinest, Aerospace engineers, Local union [REDACTED]. In 1992 they broke up the union and got rid of the inspectors. I had a [REDACTED] tractor here on my property cutting for 17 years and never a problem. Now, I have a new Cub Cadet under WARRANTY and the Axels and the deck are basically JUNK!!!!! I have also gone through 2 drive belts and now a tran belt. My oId tractor had a push button on the dash that would shut the blades off immediately. Besides, my ears hurting and hearing that crash/smash noise I’m lucky I didn’t jump off and really get hurt. I’m really concerned that it also may have started a National Forest fire in my backyard. I know that the crash/smash may never come out of my ears/head, I’m somewhat frieghtened to even get on it, more so now. I feel this complaint is justifyable in both areas of the Dept of Trade, Agriculture and Consumer protection and the Dept of ConsumerProduct Safety Commission.
Thank You for your consideration of this matter. [REDACTED]
