Emergency room Made Jun 15, 2011, published by CPSC Jul 8, 2011
The product, in the report: Sun-Mar 400 barrel rotating composter. It’s green with a black handle and holds approximately 100 gallons of material. On one end is the opening to retrieve the compost and on the opposite end is an external gear system.
We recently purchased a Sun-Mar rotating barrel composter (model 400). On one end of the composter is an external gear that goes around the circumference of the barrel. At some point our 2 year old son put one one his fingers in the gear area when one of our other kids started rolling the barrel around. We had to take our 2 year old to the emergency room because the tip of his middle finger was hanging on by a small flap of skin. My son had to get x-rays done to make sure the bone wasn’t broken. The x-rays didn’t show any broken bones. The ER doctor informed us that she would need to sediate our son as she would need to remove his nail to make sure that there wasn’t any damage to the nail bed. The doctor had to put in 9 or 10 stitches in my son’s finger.
The next day my husband sent an email to Sun-Mar telling them what happened and asked what we can do to cover up the gear area. My husband has not heard anything from the company.
