The product, in the report: Maytag Commercial-Grade Residential Agitator Washer - 3.5 cu. ft.
I need to report a safety defect with a Whirlpool Corporation product. I have a Maytag Commercial washer model MVWP586GW that is only approximately 16 months old. The washing machine control board is failing and running the drain pump randomly when not in a wash cycle. This occurred while I was away from home and the drain pump ran for an undetermined length of time and overheated, causing an electrical burning smell. Whirlpool Corporation is aware of control board failures across their washing machines but there is no recall at this time.

The product, in the report: Washing Machine top load
Maytag top-load washer purchased in 2019 becomes violently unstable during spin cycle. Machine walks, bangs, and poses a tip-over and injury risk. Manufacturer has refused corrective action and instead offered paid service plan. This is a safety hazard, not a normal wear issue.

No one hurt Made Dec 23, 2025, sent to the company Jan 9, 2026, published by CPSC Jan 28, 2026
The product, in the report: Maytag Washing Machine Top Loading High Efficiency Washer
Product: 2017 Maytag Washing Machine Model: Top Loading High Efficiency Washer Model #: MVWB765FW0 The washing machine experienced a catastrophic internal failure involving the motor assembly. An internal gearcase/seal failure allowed fluids to leak into the motor area, causing the stator and rotor to overheat and burn. The motor components were visibly scorched, and the rotor coating melted. The incident produced smoke and an intense burning odor inside my home. The washer is completely destroyed and unrepairable. The inside of the machine is burnt and the motor destroyed. Had I not been home at the time, the damage could have been significantly worse. This was not due to misuse or lack of maintenance. The washer was professionally serviced, and there were no gearcase, seal, or bearing issues identified at that time. This failure involved fluid intrusion into electrical components and represents a potential fire hazard. The manufacturer acknowledged the issue was safety-related but refused to repair or replace the washer, offering only a partial discount of 30% toward a new unit. They were not concerned with this issue, and a fire occurred within the washing machine. Thankfully, we were home, smelled the fire, and were able to stop it. If we were not home, I’m afraid of what could have happened. This occurred out of nowhere, and I am still shocked that a gearcase could cause a fire like this. I am concerned about the safety issues this machine has that are not being addressed and how they could affect other owners with the same machine.

I am writing to formally report a dangerous incident involving a Maytag washer that occurred at my home on June 2, 2024. The details of the washer are as follows: Model: MVWB835DW4 Serial Number: C94272138 Date of Purchase: November 27, 2019 On the aforementioned date, while the washer was in use, it suddenly exploded with such a force that it shook my entire house, akin to a bomb blast, causing significant damage to the Maytag washer and posing a severe risk to the safety of my family. Fortunately, no one was injured. Given the severity of this incident, I believe it is crucial for the Consumer Product Safety Commission to be aware of this issue. I am concerned that other consumers with the same or similar models may be at risk of experiencing a similar dangerous event. I request that the CPSC investigate this matter to determine if there is a defect or safety hazard associated with this model of Maytag washer. I would also appreciate any guidance on the next steps I should take regarding this incident. I am more than happy to provide you the copies of the purchase receipt, photos of the damage, and any other relevant documentation. If additional information is needed, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. I look forward to your prompt response and any assistance you can provide. Thanks

The product, in the report: Top loading Maytag Washing Machine, white.
I noticed my Maytag Washing Machine (MOD MVW7232HW0, SER CX4004385) had a crack in the lid radiating from the screw on the back left side of the lid. This crack was rather large and has only gotten bigger over time. The crack became so large that chunks of plastic are now falling off of the lid and landing in the wash. These small sharp pieces of plastic get mixed in with our clothing and pose a choking hazard to our young child. Additionally, the broken plastic causes the seal between the lid and the washer to be compromised, posing a flooding risk. I have contacted Maytag several times, including immediately upon noticing this most recent crack, and yet they refuse to acknowledge this issue. I just had this washing machine’s lid replaced less than a year ago (May 2023) for the exact same defect, and Maytag is aware of this. I also filed a complaint with this agency at that time. Moreover, the Maytag washer I had prior to this current unit had the exact same problem. I had to have the lid on that unit replaced multiple times because of cracked and broken plastic radiating from the back screw on the lid.
This washer is used under normal household circumstances, and the cracking has developed during the course of normal opening and closing of the washer lid.

The product, in the report: Maytag Washer Model # MVWB865GW1
Our Maytag washing machine is less than 2 years old. I contacted Maytag for assistance with no help. The left rear hinge, on the plastic lid, of the washing machine has cracked. The hinge pops up which doesn’t allow the washing machine to lock the lid and in return, the washing machine is non-functioning. We are able to lay a heavy brick on that broken hinge to get it to lock, but during the spin cycle, that brick comes flying off causing a hazard. The plastic lid in this area has cracked into various small sharp pieces that small children and animals can get a hold of and cause a choking hazard. It is also a cutting hazard to adults, children and animals because of the sharp edges from the various pieces that break off continuously. Maytag wants me to buy a new lid, but after reading online about various other complaints related to this same issue, The new lid just cracks into small pieces as well. This is not a solution for Maytag to just keep telling customers to buy new lids that are over $300 a piece and they keep doing the same thing.

The product, in the report: Top loading washing machine
Lid on top-loading Maytag washer fails to stay in open position because lid underside is made of plastic and has completely deteriorated after only one year of use. The machine is not safe and should be recalled because the defective lid can fall and injure an adult or child. The lid needs to be replaced with a new lid made of a different material that will not deteriorate. The small plastic parts also break off and fall into the washer and become attached to clothing. The product, in the report: Maytag Bravos XL Top Load Washing Machine
I currently have a Maytag Bravos XL Top Load Washing Machine that I purchased in 2013/2014. There is a MAJOR design flaw with this product. After each wash, the water does not completely drain all the way which allows mold to grow in the bottom of the drum of the washing machine. The reason I found this out was the disgusting smell of the laundry and unable to determine what the smell was my husband decided to do some research. Come to find out we are not the only ones with this same concern/issue. There are many posts all over the internet with the exact complaint resulting in many people watching you tube videos on how to take their washing machine apart to clean it out monthly. Maytag needs to look into these complaints and find a solution. Spending this amount of money on an appliance you should fee comfortable being able to wash my clothes without the worry of mold water spraying all over my laundry. This is a safety concern where mold can cause a ton of illnesses. I have tried to contact Maytag but they kept ignoring my responses. If you can investigate further and get to a solution this would be amazing. Thank you for you time.

No one hurt Made May 30, 2019, sent to the company Jul 1, 2019, published by CPSC Jul 16, 2019
The product, in the report: Maytag washer #MVWC565F This is a top loading model with an Adgitator
The current maytag washer has an “unsafe” washer basket which has a serious design flaw. During the “spin” cycle the entire basket assembly vibrates violently. This shaking causes the entire washer to shake violently. With medium to heavy “balanced” loads the basket actually hits the sides of the washer. In addition, the shaking is so violent that the washer actually becomes “unstable” and moves across the floor. This shaking is so violent that it shakes the cement floor and the adjoing wall.
Our washer was professionally installed and is level frojm side to side and front to back. We always balance our laundry and never had a problem with our previous Whirlpool washer. Which by the way provided us with 45 years of service free service.
Our new [Dec 2018] washer vibrates so violently that the basket can hit the sides of the washer and shatter. In addition such shaking could cause an electrical fire and cause premature parts failure. Any of these situations could cause serious injuries . . . of death.
The basket on both the [REDACTED and Maytag washer is of the same design. are so loose that one can move the entire basket assembly with ones’ finger! In other words this assembly is not secure whether in use or not
We had a service call this Wednesday [May 28] and had the service technician run a spin test with an EMPTY basket. The washer shook so violently that the cement foundation shook and the machine actuallyi started to move. The so called factory authorized technician stated that this shaking was “normal” and there was no “fix” for the problem. He contacted the factory direct and filed a complaint [REDACTED] and claimed to e-mail me a copy. As of today, May 29th NO E-Mail has been received from Paradise Appliance Services.

On February 1, 2019 purchased Maytag Washer(Whirlpool) from Lowes. The washer door malfunctions. This has been reported to Whirlpool on February 28, 2019. A service technician attempted repair on March 4, 2019. After repair, washer door continues to malfunction. This poses a serious safety issue based on 1) washer door not locking during wash cycle and 2) washer door is unable to open after finishing wash cycle. On March 20, 2019, this problem was reported to Whirlpool at 888-717-9322. Representatives in Michigan and Tennessee would not take a report of my safety issue. Requested Whirlpool give me written confirmation of my call reporting the safety issue. They refused.

The product, in the report: Maytag washing machine Model MFW9700SB color - Black
On November 27th, 2018 the Maytag washing machine Model MFW9700SB1 was being used for regular laundry. When in the “Extra High” spin cycle, the machine went out of control causing the blow-out of the plastic front sides and the top and bottom front plastic panels. The metal box remained intact. This included the door locker breaking and opening the door, the soap holder drawer and the bottom and top panels flying off causing them to hit the walls. The unit itself lifted off the ground and landed onto the 4” diameter dryer vent which was laying on the ground in the back of the machine. The washer moved forward dragging the vent approximately 18” blocking the exit door. With the door blown open, the tub continued to spin at a very high rate and the machine continued to shake and move. It was only stopped when the power was shut down. No one was in the laundry room at the time. The unit has now been moved back to its original location to allow clear access to the door.

This caller is reporting her front loading washer that she purchased July 2015 from retailer in Hawaii. She had no problems with the washer until November 28, 2017 which is the afternoon that it exploded. Her 35 year old daughter put a small load of clothes in the washer, turned it on and walked away, however a short time later the daughter, her father and other household members heard an explosion, the daughter went to see what had happened and came for her father telling him that the washer had exploded and pieces of it were scattered around the laundry room. The caller is reporting this incident as a severe injury hazard due to flying debris from the washer. There are no injuries to report The caller has not contacted the manufacturer but she does intend to contact them.

The product, in the report: Maytag Maxima MHW8200FW washing machine
Maytag Maxima MHW8200FW has black mold in soap dispensing cavity. I do not live in a humid environment and use the washer about once a week. Maytag could provide no method for preventing the mold from recurring. There is no way to remove the mold, because of all the nooks and crannies and general inaccessibility. You will not see the mold unless you remove the dispensing unit and look inside the cavity, which is something many people might not do until the warranty expires. Not sure why this particular unit has this problem, unless it is related to the auto-detergent dispensing feature. Maybe that feature prevents the circulation of air through the dispensing area.
There are multiple consumer complaints on Consumer Reports and other websites.

The product, in the report: Washing machine
Black mold growth in Maytag washing machine MHW8200FC.
Eight months after purchasing the Maytag MHW8200FC washing machine, I discovered an incredibly nasty growth of black mold in the dispenser cavity (see photo). There was no way to clean the area; Maytag had to replace the entire cavity and dispenser unit. Maytag could provide no method for either preventing the mold from recurring or for removing it once it had formed. Once the unit is out of warranty, I will be responsible for replacing the parts myself on a routine basis, or else just living with the mold.
The unit is located in a large laundry room with the door always open and a hepa air filter running 24-7. I leave the door to the washer open when not in use, as well. I do not live in an excessively humid climate (Oregon) and the house is air conditioned in the summer. I never had a problem with mold growth in my old front-loading washer which lasted over 15 years.
Since black mold is a known health hazard, I feel the CPSC should be aware of this product and its potential for causing sickness when used according the manufacturer’s instructions.
I purchased the machine on 11/18/2016 and the parts were replaced on 9/6/2017.
I have attached a photo of the mold; please contact me if you did not receive the photo.
Thank you.

My Maytag washing machine is vibrating so hard that it is bouncing around the floor and recently this vibration caused the lid lock to break. I have tried to have it repaired once with no luck.
It is a top loading washing machine that was purchased in December of 2014.
I saw that Samsung has recalled its washing machines for the same reason. I am concerned that this vibration could harm one of my children or break an item in my house.

The product, in the report: Maytag model # MHWE500VP00 serial # MW4506281 front loader washing machine
My husband and I purchased a Maytag front loader washing machine on 1/16/2009. The Model number is MHWE500VP00; serial # HLW4043148. Within the first year it started smelling like mold. I would clean mold from under the seal and from the tray where the laundry detergent went in. I would run bleach through it, but the mold persisted. I started having consistent sinus problems starting in 2011 - 2012 and finally in 2013 I ended up having to have sinus surgery. One month later I was hospitalized for a week for hypoxia and new onset asthma. My IGE level was over 4000 which indicated it was allergy related. I now have to take [REDACTED] injections twice a month (cost in $5000 per month to my insurance), use [REDACTED] twice per day, rinse my sinses twice per day with [REDACTED], use [REDACTED] nasal steroid spray twice per day and take [REDACTED] nightly. I believe this all stems from the mold issue with the washer. If I leave the door open after using the washer, then I can smell the mold in the house and if I keep the door shut after washing then I only smell the mold in the laundry room.

The product, in the report: Maytag Maxima front loading washing machine
I purchased a Maytag Maxima MHW6000XW2 January 1,2013 since we were about to have our first child and had an old top loader. I read all the online reports, did my research and this machine came in top rated. It was over $1000 for the washer but I bought it thinking I was buying the best. December 24, 2013 the metal ring in the washing machine gasket came out during a load and obliterated the entire load. Just shredded clothes to bits as well as shredding the rubber gasket. Thankfully the door stayed shut and no body got hurt. I called the warranty in and a guy came out and put in a new metal ring for the gasket and a new gasket. The next load, the front of the machine started leaking a small amount of water from the center front of the door. Fast forward 2 years. I have been following all the manufacturers instructions on leaving the door open constantly after a cycle, I got [REDACTED] and run the machine on it’s special cycle monthly. I wipe down the gasket inside and out, wipe the door down AFTER EVERY LOAD. I noticed that the laundry started to smell moldy. I couldn’t figure out why, but I have a severe mold allergy-need an epi pen severe. Currently I have a terrible headache and asthma due to opening the door of the machine and peeling the gasket back further than where i normally wipe it down. Guess what. The ENTIRE GASKET IS COVERED IN MOLD. COVERED. I’m furious and physically sick right now from this overpriced piece of junk I want a refund and a new washer that doesn’t make me sick. Heck, I wish I had our old top loader that worked just fine!!!

I have already changed out the front seal once and clean the machine out with bleach, tried vinegar rinse, specified cleaners and tylex spray and just let it sit. the thing is just loaded with mold. under the detergent drawer when I pulled it out was just black and the rubber seal is bad all the way around and under the edges. Wish they had a material that would not do this or a way that keeps it dry. I have also tried to dry it out after each use but it does not work. frustrated. date entered is approx since we have had this machine for a while and really am thinking of getting rid of machines.

OUR MAYTAG WASHING MACHINE, MODEL MHW6000XW, SERIAL NUMBER C10150053, BEGAN TO VIOLENTLY THROW ITSELF AROUND THE ROOM, CAUSING PARTS TO BREAK OFF AND BE THROWN IN VARIOUS DIRECTIONS. ONE OF THE PARTS THAT BROKE LOOSE WAS 12” BY 8” CONCRETE BLOCK, WHICH COULD EASILY HAVE BECOME A FATAL PROJECTILE IF ANY OF US HAD BEEN IN THE ROOM AT THE TIME. AFTER A QUICK ONLINE SEARCH, I WAS ABLE TO FIND SEVERAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF MACHINES MADE BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER WHICH HAD SUFFERED THE SAME FATE. AFTER A FEW ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT MAYTAG (ALSO WHIRLPOOL?) ABOUT IT, I BEGAN TO REALIZE THAT THEY HAVE NOT TAKEN ANY INTEREST IN FINDING THE ROOT OF THIS PROBLEM, SINCE THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF ANY VOLUNTARY ACTIONS HAVING BEEN TAKEN. THE PHOTOS THAT I HAVE OF MY UNIT, PLUS THE NUMEROUS PICTURES AVAILABLE TO THE CASUAL WEB SURFER SEEM TO SUGGEST THAT THERE IS A VERY LARGE PROBLEM WITH THIS DESIGN. IT APPEARS THAT THE SAME MODEL IS STILL BEING SOLD, AND I FEAR THAT SOMEONE WILL BE HURT OR KILLED BEFORE THE MANUFACTURER TAKES NOTICE.

The product, in the report: Washer
This caller is reporting her washer purchased from Lowe’s in Alabama November 21st, 2015.
She had problems the second week of ownership and she scheduled repair with F&S Appliance but then cancelled the appointment because it seemed that the problem had repaired itself.
Two days afterward the problem began again and she rescheduled the appointment January 11th, 2016.
Repair tech came to her home January 27th, 2016 and diagnosed that the washer needed to be replaced because the ball joints were defective and causing some burning odor and the unit was still on warranty.
The caller contacted the retailer, she repeated the directions that the service technician provided but she was informed by [REDACTED], the store floor manager that another tech was going to be scheduled to look at her washer.
She told him that having her washer is a necessity due to her being her Cancer fighting husband care giver and asked how she would wash their clothes and bed linens but [REDACTED], the store manager informed her to go to a neighbor’s home or a coin pay laundry location.
She left the store, calmed down and called the store the following morning, at which time she was able to speak with [REDACTED] , the store manager who has sent a loaner washer to her home.
When the delivery persons removed the washer purchased November 21st, 2015 they noted that her carpet was burned beneath it although she had only been able to use the washer three times.
She is reporting this washer as a fire hazard and is asking that it become recalled and the public made aware of the hazard.
There are no injuries being reported.
She contacted the manufacturer February 2nd, 2016 when she was advised that paperwork would be sent to her.
February 2nd, 2016 she also heard from F&S Appliance who informed her that they would be at her home on February 3rd to repair the washer.
She has had to reschedule this repair for February 9th, 2016 due to her husband’s chemotherapy schedule.
S&S repairman came out 2/9/16 to repair ball bearings but the loaner is still in use so he couldn’t do anything. He was trying to get washer info off the loaner and the caller told him that wasn’t the Maytag it was a loaner ([REDACTED]) so he asked where was the Maytag and she showed it to him and he wanted to see it. It was in the other room so we walked there and he pulled it away from the wall so he could lean it back, got down looked underneath and said the motor was completely burnt up and machine needed to be replaced and he was going back to the office and request the replacement S&S called 2/19 coming to repair on 2/22 but the consumers had another appt so she had to reschedule for 2/25. Also the head store manager at Lowe’s ([REDACTED]) was very nice and understanding. Please feel free to call me anytime.

I have a Maytag washer and on November 18. 2015 while the machine was doing a small load of towels a loud bang. almost like an explosion, I went to the machine and noticed large amounts of smoke coming from around the tub. I shut of the breaker. I went back to the washer and heard another loud bang, and at that point flames shot up around the washer. The fire dept, came and the washer was still burning. If I was not in the area of the washer we would have lost our home. I contacted Maytag with no answer. I have had to purchase a new washer.

The product, in the report: Maytag Maxima front-loading washer
A Maytag Maxima front-loading washer, had a catastrophic failure while in a high speed spin. This resulted in what can only be described as an “explosion.” The top was blown off the machine & each side was bent out one side about six inches. Wall has a hole about 20”x20” in studs and drywall. The metal drum was shredded & the other interior parts were broken, bent, & destroyed. Plastic & metal “shrapnel” was strewn about the room. The explosion damaged the drier next to the washer and sink on other side of drier. The explosion was louder than a bomb blast shaking the house. If anyone had been in the room, they would certainly have been injured, & possibly killed. I did a search online and hound other similar reports and can not believe this product is allowed on the market.

Maytag series 500 washer was found to have a cracked seam @ a plastic welded joint 4” in length. Water was found to be leaking into a drain pan under the washing machine. I was alerted by the Landlords son very early saturday morning. This washer and dryer is owned by the Landlord I pay rent to that has refused to do anything about this issue!
When we took it upon ourselves to investigate the source of the water leak , we discovered was the wash tub was cracked and leaking water and splashing onto electrical connections. Washer was immediately unplugged and the drain clean out was opened to dump the water from the washing machine tub. After cleaning up the water we found a plastic seam that was cracked about 4” in length all along what looks like a welded seam from where plastic is molded together.
I understand about maintaining the appliances and all , but this is an obvious defect. I have taken it upon myself with my Fiance’s help in reporting this incident as I fear someone maybe come Electrocuted or have a house Fire!

While washing a load of towels the washing machine started making a horrible thumping noise. I stood beside it for a few minutes and just figured it was off balance. When the cycle finished, I opened the door to get the towels out and a huge piece of glass slid out on top of my foot. Luckily I had just dropped some other dirty laundry on the floor and my foot was under some of it, other wise it could have easily sliced right through my ankle. This is VERY dangerous and VERY sharp!! Maytag should replace this piece and issue a recall if this has happened to anyone else. We don’t even put tennis shoes in the washer so I am at a loss as to what could have caused it to crack/break unless it was the temp of the water, and considering we shower in it, that would be ridiculous.

The product, in the report: A Maytag laundry pair: stacked dryer over the washer
I recently purchased a Maytag stacked washer/dryer unit, model MGT 3800XWO. The washer tub is made of plastic and has a sharp, square edge along the top. The other day when I was adding clothes to the washer, my hand rubbed along this edge, scraping off enough skin to cause bleeding.
I attempted to post this comment to the Maytag product web site, but my comment was rejected. It seems that a simple manufacturing change would solve this problem. Instead, I’ll need to file down the sharp edge myself. Pretty frustrating to pay over $2,000 for a new product and find out that it has been so poorly designed.

Purchased front loading washer from Lowes in Rochester, NY back in 2005. Model number 8700aww Ser. 10524928GC. up till now wife has used washer and dryer with no problems. Around mid May washer started tripping GFCI provided by Manufacturer, at times it only happened once or twice a week. 6/1/2012 it started to trip the GFCI unit every time, replaced GFCI problem still there. On 6/05/2012 my wife was using washer and received a sever electrical shock, and the smoke detector was set off in thee washer and dryer area. Called Fire Department they proceeded to use smoke detector and indicated without taking the washer apart that there are traces of a electrical smoke. They cut electrical cord and red tagged the machine on 6/12/2012, making the unit non usable. Called Whirlpool they sent a service tech. he indicated, yes there is a burned wire and arc marks on the bottom of washer. Called Whirlpool back and in formed them of findings on 6/12/2012. They said locate a washer (Maytag or Whirlpool) and they will make up the difference between the MSRP of the old and new units, that could be a substantial amount. My wife will NOT purchase another Maytag or Whirlpool product, (One and the same). How does one resolve this issue.

The product, in the report: HE Front Load Washing Machine
There is dangerous mold build up in the washing machine. I have used all recommended methods for preventing and eliminating the problem, yet it persists. It is bothering the allergies of the people in my family and I am worried that the mold is making my kids sick. I am likely going to have to get rid of the washer because I cannot get rid of the mold despite bleach, sanitary cycle, and several rounds of cleaners designed for the purpose.

The product, in the report: Front Load Washer
The consumer stated that he had purchased the washer from 2009 but it was not delivered until 2010. He started experiencing problems with the unit approximately 6 months ago, whenever the washer was on spin cycle it would make a loud noise (like a locomotive sound).
3/20/2012 A service rep was sent out and he was advised that the bearings were damaged and that the cost to repair it was much more than the cost of purchase.
4/2/2012 The consumer stated that the washer had almost completed its cycle about 3-5 mins remaining, he noticed smoke emitting from the rear of the unit. He immediately unplugged the washer and placed it outside to prevent a house fire.
The manufacturer had not been contacted as yet.
The consumer feels that this washer is a fire hazard and should be investigated.

The product, in the report: Maytag Maxima front-loading washer. Model # MHW6000XW2 Type 120-02 Serial # C12950137
A Maytag Maxima front-loading washer, less than 90 days old, had a catastrophic failure while in a high speed spin. This resulted in what can only be described as an “explosion.” The top was blown off the machine & each side was bent out about six inches. The metal drum was shredded & the other interior parts were broken, bent, & destroyed. Plastic & metal “shrapnel” was strewn about the room. Oil was sprayed on the wall up to the ceiling. The explosion damaged the drier next to the washer, to the point it was not usable. The washer tipped over when the failure occured. The explosion was louder than a 12 gauge shotgun blast. If anyone had been in the room, they would certainly have been injured, & possibly killed.

I purchased Maytag Front-Loading High-Efficiency Washing Machine Model MHWE200XW00 in October 2010. About 6 months later, I began noticing a great deal of water leaking onto the floor underneath the washer. I was advised by Whirlpool Corporation that the bellow was found to need to be replaced. About another 6 months following the replacement of the so-called defective bellow, I find myself experiencing the same problem AND the washer is putting holes in NUMEROUS articles. Should a consumer be expected to have to endure replacing parts on a machine purchased brand new every 6 months, not to mention the damages to carpeting, padding, clothing, etc.? It appears the Whirlpool Corporation has had problems for years of a similar nature. Why are they allowed to continue to perpetrate such horrors on the American public?

The product, in the report: Maytag Clothes Washer
On July 15,2011, I purchased a Maytag clothes washer for use in my home. When this machine is plugged into or unplugged from an electrical outlet, sparking occurs. When other appliances or tools are plugged into the same outlet, no sparking occurs and I am confident there is no problem with the outlet. This is the same outlet that my previous washer was plugged into for approximately 18 years. Two different washing machine repair technicians sent by Maytag to address my concerns have said that this sparking when the washing is plugged into or unplugged from an electrical outlet is a normal condition for this type of washer (one of the technicians noted this on her invoice) but the Maytag representative to whom I have spoken disputes this and says the machine does not cause the sparking to occur and she takes the position that the sparking is caused by my electrical outlet, I reject that position because there is no sparking at the outlet when other appliances or tools are plugged into it. Also, the electrical outlet has been tested to insure that it is wired correctly and the test indicated no faults. That the sparking is normal does not seem reasonable to me and I am concerned that this is a potential ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR FIRE HAZARD.
The incident date reported below is the date the sparking was first noticed and the sparking still occurs when the machine in plugged into or unplugged from the electrical outlet.

The product, in the report: Washing machine
Dear Sirs I purchased Maytag Centennial Commercial technology washing machine on May 10, 2010 Model #MVWC500VW Serial # CY2740963. This purchase was made at Roby’s Furniture and appliance 1870 Hwy 101 Florence Oregon 97439. I was extended an additional 6 months warranty by Maytag because I was having some problems with my machine. It has been a year and a half of emotional upset and frustration because the Service Repair man did nothing to alleviate my problems. Fleet of five repair visits from A&E Factory Service, the only work on my machine was to have a temp switch replaced and the same service man checked agitator and balance ring. The machine was tearing my towels by getting caught under the agitator. The machine is so powerful it pulled and cracked a pipe behind the washer. There was water all over the floor. I paid $442 to Chuck’s Plumbing for Hammer arresters to be installed because the machine was pulling the pipes behind my laundry room wall and also pulling pipes behind my shower wall. I also paid Bales $45.00 for a total of $487.00. I would appreciate very much if you would inform me of any defects, recalls, or other problems connected with this machine. I’m trying to retrieve the plumber cost. I don’t think it’s fair that I shall pay that amount after paying 569.99 for the machine and 100.00 for an extended warranty 668.99 Robys did finally refund my money for the machine only after receiving a letter from the Department of Justice—Civil Enforcement Division. This has been a terrible experience. Any help from you would be greatly appreciated. Thank you [REDACTED] I called Maytag Nov. 15,2011—Talked to [REDACTED] in Tenn. Related to her that I wanted Maytag to pay for the Plumber Bills. I was told Maytag will not pay.

I own a Maytag Front loading washing machine, model # MAH6711aWW. Over the past few months I’ve noticed a mildew smell coming from the washer and my clothes. I’ve tried cleaning it with bleach and only using HE products in it. Today I deiced to clean around the big rubber gasket in the front only to find that it was full of MOLD, BLACK MOLD. I’m disgusted. I pulled back the gasket/seal that sat against the metal tub to see masses of mold and what looks like clumps of mildew/mold. I’ve take pictures. I can’t find any way to get under it to clean out the mold. I’m now thinking that this could be a contributing factor to my niece and nephew’s allergy problems, that have landed them in specialty clinics and hospitals. I wish I’d known this washer would be nothing but a disgusting mess! I have no idea how to wash the kids clothes now, I can’t imagine using this washing machine anymore.

The product, in the report: Front Loader Washing Machine
I purchased a Maytag Front Loading washing machine in 2007, and have continuously experienced a mildewy smell which comes from mold which grows around the door opening of the washer. Eventhough I continue to clean it with bleach, it has become worse as time has passed. If you lift a large round gasket which lines the door of the washer which is open on one of its sides, you find moisture and mold consistently, whether you clean it once a week or once a month. I called Maytag and was told that I had to purchase something to help with the smell, call a repair person to try replacing the gasket (which is still the same design), or check with problems with the drainage. I have owned 4 sets of Maytags and have never had “drainage” problems which cause the smell. I also have never had mold growing in any of my washers. From going online I have learned that this is a consistent problem with most frontloaders. I cannot have mold growing in my home as my daughter suffers from NTM (non-tuberculosis microbacterium), which is a chronic lung disease that was diagnosed in November of 2009. I explained this to Maytag and was told they are not aware of this mold problem in their front loaders, which is definitely a false claim, since there are pages and pages of articles online from magazine, consumer pages, etc., which detail the length to which some consumers have had to deal with the problem. Refused to assist in any way.

(9/14/11) The washing machine was in use, but when it completed the rinse cycle, the water did not drain out of the washer. Smoke began to emit from under the bottom of the washing machine and the back of it. When the consumer lifted the lid, smoke emitted from the lid as well. The consumer immediately turned the washer off and unplugged it from the wall outlet.
The consumer has a small fire extinguisher, which she used to spray the bottom of the washing machine. The consumer did not see any flames, but believes that if she had not turned the washer off when she did flames might have occurred.
The consumer removed the clothes and placed them in her bathtub. A couple towels and a tee-shirt that were in the washer were singed. The consumer scooped the water out of the washer by hand. No damage outside the clothes and washer itself.
NOTE: The consumer said that her mother is on oxygen and she had to remove from the home at the time of the incident, because she could not be exposed the smoke that emitted from the washer.
The consumer called the mfr. on 9/16/11 and 9/19/11. With the last call to the mfr., the consumer asked to speak with a supervisor and she was transferred to one. The supervisor told the consumer that they were acquired by Whirlpool, but she did not specify when. The consumer asked if she could get a discount on the purchase of another washer, but the supervisor said no. The supervisor offered to send a technician out at the consumer’s expense, but the consumer declined that for fear of future problems with the washer. Nothing else transpired.
The consumer plans to replace the washer within the next week.

The product, in the report: Maytag Epic Z Front Loading HE washing machine (Model #: MHWZ600TB01)
I purchased a Maytag Epic Z washer (MOD: MHWZ600TB01) and dryer set less than three years ago. I recently had to have a service person come out and investigate why the washer was emitting a burning rubber smell and shutting off during cycles without completion. I was informed that a bearing malfunction/issue was to blame, and that this was becoming a common issue for the repairman when called to service this model of washer. Additionally, since it would essentially result in a complete rebuild, the cost of repair was just short of the original cost of the machine. I got online and researched the product and confirmed that this issue is indeed a common complaint/review with consumers. I contacted Maytag/Whirlpool about the issue via phone, email, and live chat on several occasions. The customer service representative and a supervisor informed me that there were no recalls on the machine and that there was nothing that would be done to resolve the issue from their standpoint. My complaint is that I am very concerned that this product, whether by design or mechanical, contains a defect which could create a substantial risk of injury to the public and/or presents an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death. Luckily, I have been at home when the burning smell was noticed AND that the machine actually shutoff before a fire started. Since I live in a solid log home this is of great concern to me. Additionally, I have a 100% disabled, medically fragile, nine year old daughter and have difficulty transporting her easily around the home...even without a fire hazard! The potential for catastrophic outcomes, in my opinion, with continued lack of concern or a recall on this product, really have me frustrated. Please take the time to investigate this further.

The product, in the report: Maytag Legacy Washer Failed part number is: 12002013 “MilkStool Bracket”
Washer started banging (Internally) and moving violently. Upon inspection it was observed that the frame that supports the spinning assembly had one of its 3 members completely severed, and the other 2 had suffered severe stress cracks. (The spinning assembly consists of the washer drum along with many gallons of water spinning at hunderds of revolutions per minute.)
Adjacent to the spinning assembly and unprotected is the 120volt wiring harness that rins the motor/pump assembly for the washer. if the washer had continued to run this way it could have caused a flood, contact with 120 vols and water and the potential to start a fire in my opinion.
I have owned many washers including Maytags in the past. This component is clearly underdesigned for this purpose.
Although I have a 10 year extended warranty, this part is not covered. If the perception of the Maytag corporation is that this part should not fail then clearly this leads me to believe that its design is flawed.
Imagin if this had failed and flooded the basement and there was a toddler in close proximity...

The product, in the report: Compact Front-Load Washer
I purchased a Maytag washer (MAH2400AWW, Serial #14112672JX) from Home Depot on 2/16/2007. It was delivered and installed on 2/24/2007. On 2/14/2008, I had a technician from A&E Factory Service troubleshoot the washer under warranty because it was making a clicking noise and smelled like something was burning. Upon diagnosing the problem, he discovered that the wireharness was burnt. He had to order a replacment wireharness and motor since the female end of the wireharness also burnt the interfacing male end of the wireharness attached to the motor. On 2/26/2008, the technician replaced the wireharness and motor. I saved the wireharness from this first incident.
On 9/2/2011, a similar noise and smell began occurring and I immediately stopped using the washer. Today, 9/5/2011, I investigated the problem and noticed that the wireharness burned in the same location as the original one that was replaced in 2/2008. Upon review of both wireharnesses, it appears that there is a inherent design flaw as the plastic body of the wireharness is melted/ burned in the same location from what appears to be a short-circuit, posing a fire hazard.
Luckily, on both occasions, I was home at the time the washer began malfunctioning/ short-circuiting, and was able to stop the washer immediately. I believe this wireharness design in use in this Maytag washer is a serious fire hazard for anyone that currently owns and uses this specific make and model washer. I am appalled to see that this specific model is still being sold. This make/ model washer should be immediately recalled by Maytag.

The product, in the report: MAYTAG PERFORMA “PAV3360AWW” Oversized Capacity Plus Washer
EXTENSIVE FLOOD DAMAGE caused by “Maytag Performa Oversized Capacity Plus Washer” Model # PAV3360AWW Purchased in June 2003.
Water overflow occurred due to a pressure sensor hose (approximately 3/8 “ in diameter connected to the inner drum) disconnecting during a rinse cylce. Water continued to flow into the washer and overflowed from the 2nd floor to the first floor causing extensive celing and floor damage, within 30 minutes.
The male/female connection of this hose to the drum is extremely short and held in place with a flimsy “spring clamp”. Vibration of a normal wash cylce can cause the hose to dislodge from the clamp. Without the pressure hose in place, the water flow will not shut off.
A Maytag Service Rep was called in to diagnose the failure and indicated that this is a common problem with the Maytag Performa. This machine had been serviced twice this year without any prior indication of a problem with the hose. The User’s Guide does not make any reference to the hose or indicate any maintenance requirements for this hose.
MY CEILING AND FLOORING HAS TO BE REPLACED DUE TO DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE MOLD CONTAMINATION. COSTLY DAMAGE THAT COULD HAVEN BEEN PREVENTED WITH A BETTER QUALITY CLAMP.

No one hurt Made May 24, 2011, published by CPSC Jul 13, 2011
The product, in the report: Washing Machine
Original washing machine purchased in October 2009 and had no problems with it the first six months but then it flooded his 850 square foot basement at least one or two inches. He ripped up carpeting, purchased rubber mats, dehumidifier etc to remedy this, replaced the walls and states that this was to avoid mold developing. However the moisture went behind the walls and black mold did develop at least three feet up from the ground. While caller was rebuilding to ward off problems from the first machine, repair came out 5 or 6 times but then replaced the washing machine with what manufacturer said was a new washing machine but that the caller believes was a refurbished washing machine with a six month warranty.
This second washing machine worked fine for the first five to six months and it also flooded the basement (caller has pictures). He called to ask for repair but manufacturer said that the warranty had expired and they will not repair unless the caller pays $500. Caller states that he never received notice that his warranty had expired.
Caller says one of the repair techs said that a crack in washing machine may have caused water to continue to flow numerous times which could cause an electrical hazard as well as the black mold. Caller states that the first washing machine was purchased new less than two years ago, that he believes the manufacturer should work with him, he does not wish to have another washer from this manufacturer but would like the manufacturer to repair the damage done to his home again at manufacturer expense.

No one hurt Made Apr 11, 2011, sent to the company May 15, 2012, published by CPSC May 30, 2012
The product, in the report: Maytag washing machine MAVT446AWW.
The rubber drain hose between a Maytag MAVT446AWW washing machine tub and the pump slipped off of the plastic drain spout of the washing machine tub assembly. When the hose came off, the water in the tub spilled onto the floor causing serious water damage to the house.
The drain spout of the tub assembly appears to be thin and slightly tapered and the barb is slight. These deficiencies allowed the rubber hose to simply slip off.
I ordered a new tub and find the spout of the new tub is not significantly different than the original. This looks like a defective design.
