The product, in the report: G e washer and dryer
Washing machine was leaking. Service technician came filled up the tub, and left. I opened up the door all the soap and water came pouring out, submitted photos, they waited three weeks to come back. He came with someone to help him. The man got loud in my face. My floors, which are brand new, are ruined. Water is still seeking. Underneath the floorboards and popping out dryer was delivered by a third party company. They smashed it through the door frame. The door is damaged. The frame is damaged. The dryer is damaged and now they’re refusing to send a new one due to the past. History, over the last two weeks with ge, even though it’s under warranty. Prior to that, they made me wake three weeks, while water was just stagnant. Underneath the lining of the wood floors and the molding, i’m highly toxic to mold and allergic to. It can’t be around it now. Have a headache, stuffy nose, and i’m feeling ill. There are insurance companies just sitting on it. Because nothing can be done until the parts are sent back to [REDACTED], their insurance company, and how am I supposed to do that? Now that they’re basically writing me off and not servicing the unit, or replacing it, they want to do a buyback. I can’t even purchase new units. Because these were on sale and everything’s gone up in price. In the last year, I never requested a buyback. I requested in writing that I wanted the two units replaced.

The product, in the report: GE profile washer, white, Model number: WPGT9150HWW Serial number: FS401861M
My washer that was on recall with GE caught fire, I called them after discovering the recall, they had a tech come out twice and replace a singular part, the one that caused the fire. However, the issue was not completely fixed and a safety hazard. GE [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] at GE declined to further assist and advised their portion of the claim was done. They offered me a 20% off coupon for a new washer.

No one hurt Made Jun 12, 2026, sent to the company Jun 18, 2026, published by CPSC Jul 7, 2026
The product, in the report: The product is a GE GFW655SPVDS front-load, high-efficiency residential washing machine. The washer is a 4.8 cubic foot capacity model in a Carbon Graphite finish. The unit measures approximately 28 inches wide, 39.75 inches high, and 32 inches deep (approximately 54.5 inches deep with the door fully open). The washer contains a stainless steel wash drum, a front-loading glass door, and a rubber door gasket/seal between the door opening and the drum. It is equipped with GEs UltraFresh Vent System with OdorBlock and Microban antimicrobial technology.
I purchased a GE GFW655SPVDS front-load washing machine to replace a prior washing machine.
After the washer was installed, I began experiencing physical reactions when near the machine and when handling clothing washed inside it. My symptoms included burning, stinging, and itching of my eyes, irritation of the skin around my eyes, nasal congestion, and irritation of my hands after contact with the machine or laundry.
I had used the same detergent, fabric softener, and laundry products for years in my previous washer and dryer without any issues. The washing machine was the only variable that changed.
I attempted extensive troubleshooting to determine whether the issue would resolve. I ran more than 15 wash cycles, including multiple empty hot cleaning cycles, but the reactions continued.
I also performed additional testing. A paper towel wiped across the rubber door gasket caused eye irritation and itching. A towel washed in the machine without any detergent and stored damp in a sealed bag caused eye irritation when the bag was opened. Clothing washed in the machine caused immediate eye burning, stinging, and congestion when worn, including clothing that had been air dried.
While the washer did not always have a strong noticeable odor, my symptoms increased when the door was opened and I was exposed to the interior of the machine.
These reactions were severe enough that I could not safely use the washing machine or wear clothing washed in it, leaving me without a reliable way to perform basic household laundry. I am submitting this report because I am concerned that materials, coatings, antimicrobial treatments, manufacturing residues, or other substances associated with this appliance may cause significant reactions in sensitive consumers.

The product, in the report: GE 4.5 cu. ft. Top Load Washer in White with Dual Action Agitator. Model # GTW485ASWWB
A new GE 4.5 CU FT top load washer model GTW485ASWWB was purchased from Home depot. The unit has a known design flaw that drains the water during the wash cycle prematurely. The machine attempts to wash the clothes with no water. We have had two units and both nearly caught fire and produced a heavy electrical smoke. GE has not responded to my concerns and continues to sell the unit to other consumers.

The product, in the report: GE front-loading washing machine (model GF2550SSN5WW, serial SZ318061N)
On April 5, 2026, around noon, the glass door of my GE front-loading washing machine (model GF2550SSN5WW, serial SZ318061N) suddenly shattered while the machine was running a normal wash cycle. The glass exploded inward into the drum, covering all of the clothing with sharp fragments. Some pieces were embedded in the clothes, and the force of the failure also caused visible damage to the metal drum.
This was a dangerous failure that could have caused serious injury if anyone had been nearby or if the glass had been handled unknowingly while removing clothing. The machine was only 1 year and 1 month old, just outside the warranty period.
When I looked into replacement parts, I found that the replacement door glass for this model is a very commonly purchased item, which suggests that similar failures may be occurring frequently.
Because this failure involves shattering glass, potential injury, and indications of a pattern of similar part replacements, I believe this may represent a safety defect that warrants investigation.

The product, in the report: GE Profile 4.8 Cu. Ft. Carbon Graphite Washer Dryer Combo
I own a GE washer/dryer combo. During a normal wash cycle, I suddenly heard a loud sound like coins or metal banging around inside the drum. When I checked the machine, I discovered that the interior glass on the washer door had completely shattered while the machine was running. The glass fragments were rotating inside the drum during the cycle.
There was nothing unusual in the load and nothing struck the door that would have caused the glass to break. The machine was operating normally prior to this. The failure happened mid-cycle without warning.
This created a safety hazard because broken glass was circulating inside the washer while it was operating. The appliance has had multiple issues previously, but this is the first time the door glass has shattered.

The product, in the report: GE Hybrid washing machine
My GE Hybrid washing machine (model GFWS2600F1WW and serial SF925879G) was in a low spin cycle washing two quilts, and started shaking violently. I am 8.5 months pregnant and went to look and see what the shaking was about, and then went back into the kitchen to call my husband. A few seconds after I went back into my kitchen, the door literally exploded off of the washing machine. All of the knobs and attachments flew off the machine as well, and a large concrete block with plastic was inside the drum of the washing machine. This could have been a very serious accident for myself and my unborn child if I had still been in the laundry room.

The product, in the report: The GE washer (Model GTW485ASW0WB) creates excessive electrical interference during spin cycles, causing a code-compliant [REDACTED] GFCI breaker to trip. This renders the machine unusable for heavy loads. GE’s suggested remedy was to install a different brand of breaker, which would violate the UL listing of my home’s electrical panel and compromise fire/shock safety. GE has failed to install the known service kit or offer a refund after more than 30 days of documented failure. We have had an electrician come out and have provided documentation to GE that our breaker is working fine and there is no electrical issue.
We received a washer from GE that has been tripping our circuit breaker intermittently and after one month GE has been unable to provide a service resolution or replacement for the unsafe product.

The product, in the report: GE washer/dryer combo Model: GFQ14ESSN1WW
I will try to be brief as I explain why your assistance, comments and suggestions will be very much appreciated.
Recently I purchased a GE washer and dryer combo Model: GFQ14ESSN1WW, including delivery and setup from Home Depot’s online store. From the point of delivery and setup the experience has been all downhill, an education and a nightmare.
By design, the dryer is not actually going to dry clothing unless the unit is set to run for an endless period of time and even then your garments will probably still be damp. The two GE service techs I spoke with said 5-7 hours may not be enough time.. But, the motor could overheat and cause a fire. There is no auto-shutdown for when the motor gets too hot.
Since the delivery, I have learned there are literally thousands of complaints online about these units because the dryer fails to “dry” clothing; plus motor, condenser and heat exchange issues, among others. There is not a whisper or even mentioned of any of these issues in the marketing documents or for that matter, the manual.
The manual fails to provide complete operational and maintenance information or warnings of the many potential fire and health hazards such as mold and mildew contamination. The Troubleshooting Tips refer to numerous reasons why your garments will not dry but never tells you how to prevent them from happening.
There is no mention of the impact the long running time will have on your water and electric bill. Or how the motor runs under stress and has no emergency shutoff for when it potentially overheats and causes a fire. Or where the referenced external lint filter is, or the internal lint drainage trap, or the pump filter, or the airflow ducts, or how to maintain them. There is no tool provided to access the trap door in the front lower corner of the appliance or instructions on how to access it. There is no prior warning or adequate information in the manual about a dryer water drainage hose or the requirement to manually drain the large amount of water that accumulates and that has to be drained regularly, even when the unit is not in use and the supply water shutoff.
There is no marketing product information given or information in the manual to explain exactly what a condenser dryer is, how it works or how to maintain it. It would be helpful and important to know beforehand there is never a time in which water is not injected into the washer or dryer; which is why the dryer will essentially never dry your garments.
My order confirmation and purchase receipt are on Home Depot letterhead. Home Depot has a return policy that applies to major appliances purchased at the store or delivered by the store that covers visual damages and defects only and within 48 hours.
I purchased the appliance online. The Home Depot online sales return policy states “In the event you wish to send a product back to us… you may return it… for a refund or exchange… within 90 days from the date of purchase. There is no online return exclusion which prevents the return of the appliance to the store.
GE Appliances has no return policy which makes sense, because they are not the seller. GE takes the position that “as long as it works as designed, incorrectly or not, it can not be returned” under warranty. The GE Appliances service tech told me that he tells everyone to just put it out at the curb and let someone carry it off; they don’t work and are unsafe and unhealthy; eventually there will be class action lawsuits or recalls.
For some reason that only Home Depot seems to understand they have taken the position that only GE Appliances has the right to decide if the appliance should or can be returned; to GE Appliances? to Home Depot? But again, GE’s position is that as long as it works as designed, they will not take it back.
So, I appear to be caught between a rock and a hard place!
I am a senior, living on my social security, with incurable health issues and disabled. I can not afford to buy another washer and dryer and I am not able to go to public Laundromats.
The provided attachments are for your review and consideration. If you need additional information please do not hesitate to contact me. You may have to leave a message but I will call you back. Thank you.

No one hurt Made Oct 28, 2025, sent to the company Nov 6, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 26, 2025
The product, in the report: This a top-of-the-line front loading washing machine which was purchased in a premium color of sapphire blue
In the manual, it reads that you need to rinse and wash the debris out of the drain filter. There is a small cover in the bottom, right hand corner, and there is a little space where you put your finger or nail in and you pull down and that to open the door so that you can unscrew the filter and wash it out. The first and only time that I opened this tiny door to get to the drain filter basket it came off of the unit. I did not initially notice that it came off because of a tiny plastic piece that are supposed to serve as hinges for this heavy metal door had snapped off and and flew a few feet away from the unit. I cleaned the basket and screwed it back in and picked the flap door up to put it back on, and it would not secure in place I looked closer at the piece and noticed that the small thin plastic tab that was serves as a hinge for the heavy metal door was broken completely off. I had to search for this around my laundry room and finally found it. This couldve been a terrible choking hazard situation. In no logical way should a metal heavy duty door be hinged with two tiny thin plastic tabs they do use metal tabs to hold metal plate onto the plastic mechanism, but then chose to design plastic hinges to hold the weight of that metal this should have definitely been the other way around it is very obvious to see. I called GE parts about getting it replaced under the warranty and they sarcastically told me that they have never heard this complaint before. I asked about product recalls and he said there are none and I said well product recalls begin somewhere children in my care could have gotten to the piece before me and choked and possibly died. Aside from being a safety hazard a $2000 unit should not have a piece broken the first time that you open it the way that they instructed you to the manual. I was not given any other departments I could speak to. She is a company is not concerned with this based on my attempt to reach out to them to bring it to their attention. Not only do they need to replace the door, but they need to look into this so other little children dont get access to this piece when it breaks off. I was told by the parts representative of that. Wow I must be strong and I said no I opened it with no tools just with my fingernail and I am not extra strong. This issue was downplayed and other consumers are at risk.

The product, in the report: GE WASHER-GTW465ASNWW/SERIAL#AZ114800G
Product: GE Top-Load Washer Model: GTW465ASNWW Purchase Date: February 2024 Retailer: Home Depot]
Incident Summary:
Since purchasing this GE washer, it has consistently shaken violently and moved several inches during spin cycles. During one cycle, I had to pause the washer mid-spin to prevent it from hitting nearby walls. The shaking was so intense that the machine shifted out of placethis has happened multiple times. I took photos of the machines position after movement (attached), and I also have a video, though the upload feature doesnt allow video submission.
This issue has persisted despite four service visits. Initially, GE claimed to have no service record. I had to escalate the issue, provide my case number and technician details, and was then told only partial records were available. I sent certified letters to GEs corporate office before July 4, 2025, with no response to date.
This washer is unsafe and may result in property damage or personal injury if the instability continues. I am requesting investigation and appropriate follow-up action.

The product, in the report: GE WH16X27251 Washer Control Board and Support Assembly
Purchased (1) new GUD24GSSMWW from Martin Appliance on 7/14/20 and it was delivered and installed shortly after.
On 7/3/23 the washer stopped working causing error lights to flash. Dryer working normally. Diagnosed possible lid-lock issue - replaced with OEM Washer Lid Lock WH44x10288 from LinkEZs Amazon store.
Washer still inoperable.
Continued diagnosis and found faulty main control board. Replaced main control board on 7/8/23 with a new GE WH16X27251 purchased on GE Amazon store.
Washer operated normally.
On 11/2/24 the washer was operating and during its cycle it stopped working with no error lights. Dryer working normally. Checked breaker and it did not trip. Reset breaker, still no power to washer. Disconnected power cord from outlet and removed the panel covering the main control board to inspect. Found black filaments on the back of the cover panel and covering the main board, and a burn mark on the cover panel. Reconnected power cord to power and noticed a flashing arc coming from lower part of the main control board and upon further inspection found significant damage caused by burning of the main control board.
Replacement WH16X27251 lasted about 16 months.
This is a natural gas dryer and electric washer combo unit.

Since purchase it had had issues with noise, leaking, and now MOLD AND MILDEW that is built up inside the machine to the point of staining clothes and making our daughters sick. Myself and my wife are the only user’s of this machine. We used the machine as per manufacturer reccomendations also monthly or even 2x a month cleaning to prevent mold and mildew. The machine is supposed to have built in microban technology to prevent this along with a self clean function and self venting function to help. These all did nothing to prevent this. My two daughters who were born premature did come home and were sick often. Come to find out it was because of the washer that had mold and mildew and also put that onto their clothes/blankets. My wife and I have had constant headaches.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Washer & Dryer Combo
I have purchased a GE Profile Washer & Dryer Combo which emits toxic vapors. These vapors endangered my life, put me in the hospital, and destroyed the majority of my clothes. The cost of medical care (including hospitalization) and damages (e.g., destroyed clothes) are way above the amount disputed here. Additionally, two GE technicians failed to diagnose my broken appliance, which led to my hospitalization. Finally, Home Depot also did not diagnose the problem with my appliance, dismissed the criticality of my situation and pushed my case to GE, even thought my purchase was in the 90-day return window of Home Depot.

GE 4.5 cu. ft. top load washer model #GTW465ASNWW purchased 9/14/2023. Liquid laundry detergent leaked from a shelf above the washer onto the control panel and through the start button onto the control board and started a short and small fire on the control board. The control board, control panel, and other plastic parts were damaged and/or melted. We were not aware this happened and the fire extinguished itself and did not spread any further. There was a small cardboard guard under the control panel but it did not prevent the liquid from leaking through the start button onto the control board.

WASHING MACHINE PUTS OUT BLACK PIECES OF DEBRIS ONTO CLOTHES AFTER WASHING. GE TOP LOADER AND BEFORE THAT NEW MACHINE I HAD [REDACTED] TOP LOADER. I AM THE ONLY USER. LOOK ONLINE FOR HOW TO GET RID OF THIS ISSUE AND YOU CAN SEE IT IS AN INVASIVE AND WIDESPREAD ISSUE. I KNOW THAT WASHING MACHINES MADE IN PAST CURRENT 10 OR SO YEARS DO NOT EMPTY ALL THE WATER FROM THE MACHINE. I BELIEVE THE MOLD AND BACTERIA CREATED FROM STANDING WATER INSIDE THE MACHINES IS THE REAL CAUSE OF THESE BLACK FLAKEY DEBRIS. THIS IS CLEARLY A DESIGN FAILURE. I CONSIDER MOLD AND BACTERIA TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE. I WAS BORN IN 1954 SO I KNOW THIS NEVER WAS AN ISSUE IN WASHING MACHINES UNTIL OUR CURRENT TIMES. IN MAY 2022 I PURCHASED MY NEW GE TOP LOADER IN GREAT HOPES I WOULD NEVER HAVE THIS PROBLEM AGAIN. BUT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THE BLACK DEBRIS PRESENTED. IN APRIL OF 2023 I HAD A GE AUTHORIZED REPAIRMAN TAKE A LOOK AT THE MACHINE SO IF IT WAS DEFECTIVE I COULD RETURN IT FOR A NEW ONE. BUT HE SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG AND TO USE A MACHINE CLEANER AND GO LIGHTER ON AMOUNT OF DETERGENT AND SOFTENER (I HAD BEEN USING ALL PLANT BASED AND NATURAL). I FOLLOWED HIS INSTRUCTIONS. 9 DAYS LATER CALLED HIM BACK BECAUSE NO CHANGES ALLEVIATED THE BLACK DEBRIS FROM PRESENTING. I CHECKED ON LINE WHICH ARE COMPARATIVELY THE SAME SUGGESTIONS HE TOLD ME. NONE OF THESE SUGGESTIONS ALLEVIATE THIS PROBLEM.

GE washing machine that my wife has been using in our home was purchased August, 2022: model number GTW500ASN2WS. at the conclusion of each wash, there is a terrible, musty mildew smell that we are concerned can lead to mold in our home Water remains in the drum and has to be wiped out after each wash and we have even tried using a cleaning tablet but that has not solve the problem. We feel the water retention in the drum and gasket, presents very dangerous health hazard. We have been in touch with GE who has sent representatives seven times and have been unable to remedy this problem and refuses to give a replacement. We feel GE is negligent in addressing this Problem because of the potential health hazard of mold, and we are seniors in our 80s which makes the situation even more dangerous.

The product, in the report: GE washing machine, model #: GTW680BSJ6WS serial #: FM162740G
We recently purchased (within the last two years) a GE washing machine, model #: GTW680BSJ6WS serial #: FM162740G from Lowe’s in Vernon Hills, IL. After six months or so, the washing machine stopped working - so Lowe’s replaced it with a new one (same model). On 11/12/21, about a 1.5 years later, our washing machine exploded during the spin cycle - it sounded like there was a car crashing into our house. The machine split in half, pieces flew everywhere, it went airborn and made a hole in our wall. We immediately called GE - they sent a service person out to look at the machine, who was at our house for less than 30 seconds, and said “the machine cannot be fixed.” GE advised us that they could give us a discount towards the same machine if we wanted to purchase it again but that is all they could do since the warranty expired (hardly, we have had the machine for under two years). Why would I trust the SAME machine that exploded in my home, with two young toddlers living here? I was mortified. I would understand if a knob broke off, or the machine gave out... that the warranty would not cover anything... but this is a special case... their product exploded and could have REALLY hurt a member of my family! Not only would I like a full refund and to be compensated for the damage done to my home from GE, but I believe this product needs to be investigated and recalled. Again, this happened during the spin cycle... there were only TWO SHEETS in the washing machine... wasn’t even half way full. This should never happen in someone’s home. GE needs to be held accountable.

Shortly after, it started to spin faster and shaking violently. A loud explosion followed along with a sharp pain to my right forearm. My GE washer machine exploded and caused damaged to my walls and electrical outlet. It’s been over a week and a repair man finally came out. He deemed it unrepairable so I contacted GE to find out the next step. After speaking with a GE rep, the told me that the appliance was out of warranty and that they could offer me a discount. My mother woke up to a house filled with smoke. Somehow the washer caught fire at roughly 5am in the morning. It was not being used at the time. Fortunately no one was injured, but her house is ruined from the residual smoke smell. We had to have the fire department come and put out the fire. There is a lot of damage to the stored items in the basement as well as the structural components in relation to the smell. I dont understand how a company can do so little to notify consumers of such a dangerous product. Guess its all about the bottom line nowadays.

Washing machine was in operation when my wife heard an explosion coming from the laundry room. She went into the laundry room to find parts of the washing machine, water and dirt all over the walls and clothes, the knob to the washing mashing missing and the top of the tumbler housing on the floor. When she opened the washing machine, she saw that the tumbler housing was completely broken off. Thankfully no one was in the laundry room at the time so no one was hurt. We contacted GE and there response was that since this is not a known issue and that they don’t have a recall on this particular model, there is nothing they can do. This machine is about 2 years old and it doesn’t seem like a reasonable expectation or an acceptable risk for a washing machine to explode.

The product, in the report: GE 4.6cu ft top loading washing machine
I have a GE top loading washing machine that randomly turns on by itself. When it does this, there are no lights indicating that the machine is on, the power button is unresponsive, and the only way to shut the unit off is to unplug it from the wall. This has happened twice (that I know of) in the year that I’ve owned the product. Because of this random behavior, I keep the lid to the machine open, hoping that the sensors would prevent it from filling up with water or going into an agitation cycle. Today it came on with the lid open, and while it didn’t fill up with water, the basket was trying to move back and forth. There were no lights indicating it was turned on, only the word CANCELLED scrolling across the screen. The machine was totally unresponsive to every button I tried to push and I had to unplug it to turn it off.
I’ve tried contacting GE about this in the past and felt that the response I received was very dismissive. I contacted them again today, but so far, have gotten no response. I worry that this is a big safety issue as this machine is equipped with a locking lid. If the sensors aren’t keeping the machine from coming on and trying to run loads with the lid opened, what would happen if a child went to investigate the sounds of a malfunctioning machine and fell in, and then the lid fell shut after them and locked? I know its a highly improbable situation, but this machine has sensors, and a lock for safety, and if the sensors aren’t working correctly, the lock on the lid could become a dangerous feature. I took a video of the incident so I had proof.

Started front load GE washer with towels and underwear. Went into the house and later heard a Big Bang from the garage. Ran to the garage and saw the washer about 10 inches away from where it sits on it’s pedestal. The door was wide open hanging at an angle. The soap drawer was all the way out. The metal panel on the back Was pushed out. After taking laundry out the stainless steel drum was all bent and distorted, plastic shavings in the drum as well. After back of washer taken off three of the four support were broken. Not really sure what happened . We have always had a service contract on it nd was serviced regularly. We have had always had vibration problems and were given numerous explanations for it. Wrong soap, soap buildup on the tub made it vibrate . Some said it only ran correctly if totally full. I know all about the machine being off balance and what to do. But this never was corrected. So I guess it vibrated itself to exploding. What might have happened if I had been in front of the washer I don’t know. There was no damage to the matching dryer right next to it or wall.

The product, in the report: top-load washer
During the wash cycle the washer began to shake excessively and caused the tub to come loose from the frame. The submitter said after the incident the washer no longer worked. She went to Lowes and purchased another washer.
She contacted the firm and reported the issue. She was told that the washer was not recalled and they asked to examine the washer but the washer was hauled away by Lowe’s when they delivered the new washer. The firm refused to assist with the expenses of the new washer.
The submitter believes the washer should be recalled because it poses an injury hazard. She said during the incident the washer moved from one side of the room to the other, damaging both walls and the floor that was close by.
The washer was installed on June 11, 2014.

The product, in the report: GE clothes washing machine. Model: GTW680BSJWS. Top-load clothes washing machine.
I purchased a GE clothes washer on 01/31/2017 from The Home Depot. Model Number: GTW680BSJWS. It was delivered new to my home on approximately 02/07/2017. I began to experience some issues with the washer including increasing noise and continuous dripping water from the inlet valves. I had requested service through GE Appliances service scheduling website on 02/10/2018. Unfortunately there were some delays in scheduling with an authorized servicer. A GE authorized service provider came to my home on 03/05/2018 and performed no repairs, despite the visible dripping of water and noise issues as described. I continued to use the washing machine after this service visit date. I had last used the washing machine the afternoon of 04/10/2018. The washing machine sat unused and powered off in my main floor laundry room, with the lid open, for more than 36-hours. I awoke the morning of 04/12/2018 to the sound of the washing machine motor running and the display panel powered on. None of the buttons on the display panel worked and the only action that stopped the machine was to unplug it. My husband and I are the only people in the home and the washing machine was found to be running in the early morning hours with neither of us having used it in more than 36-hours. After this incident, the washing machine remained unplugged, and unused, until a GE Appliances Authorized servicer could come and attempt to repair it. Any attempts to plug it back in resulted in the same unstoppable motor running and non-functioning control panel. Therefore, for our safety and that of our home, the machine remained unplugged. Another repair service request was submitted to GE Appliances on 04/12/2018. The GE Appliances Authorized Servicer came to my home on 04/26/2018 and replaced the failed controller, water valve, and gear case. Because the washing machine motor and control panel started without any human intervention and because the only way to stop it was to unplug it, this posed a serious fire hazard to my home. I am relieved that I was home when it happened, and woke up to hear it; however, I am frightened to think of the outcome had no one been home to unplug it. I have since found internet message boards and other online resources describing these same problems in other GE washers of the same model. Consequently, even though the above noted repairs have been made, I am afraid that the same problem could reoccur. I now unplug the washing machine or switch off the power at the wall outlet, in addition to the power button on the washer itself, when the washing machine is unattended.

The product, in the report: Front Loading Washer
This consumer is reporting her front loading washing machine that she purchased from a home store around mid 2006. She had no problems with the unit until sometime between July 11th and 12th, 2017 She was washing clothes and around mid wash during the spin cycle she saw white smoke coming from around the edges of the door. She turned the unit off then unplugged it from power. She searched for repair techs around her area but could find none. Her father in law said he could repair it but when he began taking it apart and viewing it, he stopped working on it and advised her that there had been a fire inside when he saw burned parts inside the rear tub. The consumer then contacted the manufacturer July 21, 2017 and she advised caller to contact CPSC. She is reporting her washer as a fire and burn hazard, if she had not been near and not seen the white smoke coming from it then it may have escalated into a house fire. She is asking for this product to become recalled with rebate/replacement as a remedy.

The product, in the report: GE top loading washer model #GTW460ASJ2WW, serial #VF193086G
GE Top Load Washer Model #GTW460ASJ2WW- Serial #VF193086G has a chronic problem which, in my opinion, is a shock hazard and a fire hazard. For the last 6 months the spin cycle has been faulty. Service was called 6 months ago, 2 months after that and now again. The situation is the spin cycle stops working. This requires the user to manually turn the machine to the rinse/spin directly. Sometimes this works and sometimes it does not. The hazard part occurs when the machine, after sitting untouched for up to 12 hours, decided to turn on all by itself. The machine bypasses the input panel, turns off all lights and doesn’t allow input, then turns on the pump. There is no water in the machine but the pump runs until the user unplugs the machine. Even if you let the machine sit for hours unplugged, then plug it back in, the pump starts pumping without the presence of water. The pump gets extremely hot and the smell of electrical wires overheating is noticeable. Fortunately, we were home each time this occurred or had arrived home to find the machine pumping nothing but in time to prevent a short circuit and/or fire. The most recent incident occurred in the early morning hours while we were still sleeping. We woke up to the sound of the pump actively pumping away and almost overheating. Had this occurred during the night, it could have caused a fire and/or death.
There should be an immediate recall of this model, as there has been a recall of similar GE models due to the fire hazard and potential loss of property and/or life.

GE top loading clothes washer Model No: GTWN 2800D1, Ser No: AF140707G purchased from Home Depot, Punta Gorda, FL 3/14/2015.
Washer began to make loud noise during spin cycle and subsequently began to emit smoke and a burning smell. GE service tech inspected the machine on 5/22/17 when the motor began to smoke, spark, arc, and catch on fire when power was applied. The tech stated because washer was past the one year warranty period, customer would be responsible for repairs which would be more that the original purchase price.
This problem appears to be similar to other GE top loading washers that were recalled on 9/15/2016, for posing a fire hazard. However, this model was not included in the recall.

The product, in the report: GE Profile top loading washing machine
I was washing a mattress pad when we heard a loud boom. My boys were sitting in the living room and saw the closet door blow open from the force of the lid blowing off the washing machine when it exploded. There was water everywhere, the wall was dented, the door blew off the hinges and the molding around the door was knocked loose from the force of the explosion. Pieces of the machine were inside it and the back of the machine as well as the lid were torn off. The only thing that was in the washer when this happened was one king size mattress pad. Luckily none of us or our pets were too close to the machine when it happened.

The product, in the report: Washer
On Sunday evening, January 29, 2017 I put two sets of sheets and pillow cases into my GE top loader to be washed and went into my kitchen (which is next door to the laundry room) to get some bills paid. After a while I began to smell a terribly offensive odor coming from the laundry room. I opened the laundry room door and the smoke was so thick you could not see. I immediately opened all the doors and windows and called the fire department. The fireman pulled the front panel of the washer off and showed me where oil which had leaked from the washer had caught fire from the motor and was burning the rubber belt causing the heavy smoke. They extinguished the fire and told me to leave the windows open all night. The next day I call my insurance company to report the fire. They sent professional cleaners out to suck out the smoke (which took several days), remove the damaged clothes hanging in the room, the smoking washer and assess that else needed to be done. A week or so later, a friend told me to check the internet because she had read that since 1998. GE has had problem with washers catching fire. I did and saw the info about GE washers catching fire. I called the telephone number listed to report such happenings and told the gentleman to whom I spoke what had happened. He asked for the model and serial number of the faulty washer, which I gave him. He was very upset that the washer had been removed and told me if I had the burned, smoked up washer brought back, had it re installed and let GE uninstall it, they would give me a new GE washer. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. I had not asked for a new washer and would even consider installing another GE, but to suggest that after days of coughing from the smoke, that I re-install the faulty washer, was ludicrous. I did however want them to see the faulty washer. The firm that had removed the washer sent GE pictures and offered to let them send a service man to see it, but GE declined. In the interim GE has sent a credit for $76 which I could, but won’t use to purchase another GE washer. I have since learned that several people where I live got rid of their GE washers because they smelled when they operated. I just want other people who have a GE top loading agitator washer to be wary when they use them. The washer’s model no. is WCXR1070/TAWW.

The product, in the report: Model WPGT9360E0WW GE HE Top Loading Profile Washer, White
Our Model WPGT9360E0WW GE HE Top Loading Profile Washer caught fire 18-May-2016. It appeared that the fire originated at the main control board, P/N WH12X10281. When this event occurred, we immediately unplugged the washer from its electrical supply, but smoldering continued for a few minutes. When the smoldering and smoking had slowed, we removed the backsplash and used a fire extinguisher as an additional safety measure as there did seem to be heat generated from the control board area.
The Washer had been loaded with laundry, which then had to be taken to a laundromat along with all of our laundry as we of course would not reconnect the defective GE Washer to the electrical supply. We researched having the main control board replaced, but learned that a new washer could be obtained for a lower cost than the parts and labor for repair. We purchased a new washing machine of a different brand and paid to have the defective GE Washer hauled away at the time of delivery of our new machine.
GE issued a Recall Notice dated 28-Nov-2016 for this defective washer citing that there is a risk of fire. By that time, six months following the recalled defective GE washer catching fire, the defective GE washer had been removed from our home and replaced with an alternate brand. Upon receiving the Recall Notice, I immediately contacted GE to request reimbursement for the replacement washer that I purchased, plus the expended fire extinguisher and laundromat costs, a total of $522.50. GE failed to respond and so I re-transmitted my request on 13-Feb-2017. Finally on 03-March-2017, GE called to advise that since I no longer have the washer for their “verification”, my request will not be considered. I had provided photos indicating charring of the washer backsplash above the area where the fire originated, but GE used this weak excuse of the washer having been removed from our home nine (9) months earlier for not reimbursing for the replacement washer. The washer was no longer under warranty and I saw no reason to contact GE prior to my receipt of the Recall letter. And who in the world would keep a burned out washer at their home for months after it had been replaced?
Our home is still loaded with GE Appliances including dishwasher, clothes dryer, refrigerator, cooktop and range and vent hood. Hopefully these items will not catch fire, and as they reach the end of their service life, they will certainly not be replaced with GE products.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Top-Loading Washer
There may be additional hazards associated with GE Profile top-loading washing machines.
I received in mid-December 0f 2016 a recall notice covering GE Profile WPGT9350CWW with S/N SF400207M purchased in October of 2003. Unfortunately, the machine had caught fire in July of 2016, and after my usual repair-person (not GE-affiliated) advised that it was not economically repairable, I decided to replace it. Upon receipt of the recall notice, I called GE to find out if they would at least cover the cost of the repair-person’s visit ($89). They said that they would not, as the washer was no longer in my possession. Someone named “[REDACTED]” told me that, unless they could see the washer and inspect it, they could not know if my washer caught fire for the reason that the washers were subject to recall. Such fires, he asserted, were very rare, so perhaps it had caught fire for another reason. [REDACTED] further asserted that the repair cost cited by my repair-person (I had told [REDACTED] $900 but it actually was $850, now that I look at the invoice) was higher than the cost of replacing the faulty part. I think [REDACTED] may have failed to account for other damage to the machine arising from the fire.
The fire started with a blue flash (like an electric arc), followed by some yellow apparent flame and black smoke. It self-extinguished before I could get a fire extinguisher and spray the machine.

Unit exploded January 2, 2017. The unit is almost 1 year old, we purchased the set with a new constructed home in late January 2016. I was told by GE that this model is December 2015 model, so new. My wife was washing a very small load that consisted of a king size mattress pad and nothing more. Pieces went everywhere, some plastic, some metal. I am currently working with GE to resolve the damage to my laundry room and dryer that was located next to it. The washer is a total loss. Wall has a sizeable hole and crack going upward, also, wood modeling cracked. Floor has a few gouges from the tub coming apart from the unit and parts flying. A few other walls have damage from flying parts. Dryer was damaged due to washer slamming into it and pushing into shelving. Dryer is being repaired today for cosmetic damages to sides and top. GE’s insurance adjuster has been to my home to handle the claim for damages to the floor and walls. Washer will be replaced by GE and old taken away.

We were doing a load of laundry, this unit is used very infrequently. This unit is 8 years old and has not ever been abused or used on a regular basis. Prompting report, After researching Online there are hundreds with this model and thousands with GE models all having the same type of issues. GE recalled some models but passed this one up for recall. After I took ours apart I found the cause but GE will not stand behind it.

In early 2015 (January or February), my GE Adora washing machine, which was just over a year old at the time, started jumping around in the utility room while it was running, damaged the wall, and flooded the room. The drum was broken during the incident. After talking a lot with GE, they agreed to fix the machine at a reduced cost. GE refused to replace the machine, citing it was outside the one year warranty period. On September 9, 2016, the machine was running, and I heard a very loud explosion. When I got to the utility room, I saw the wall was damaged further, and the machine had come apart in the explosion. The lid was unattached from the base and crooked, and the drum was no longer attached to anything and was sitting sideways in the base. There was no water in the machine any longer, so it had either just finished draining or was spinning when the explosion occurred.

When I the door of the Washing machine it began pouring out even more smoke into the air. My clothes all smelled like burnt rubber. Upon calling GE I just get a recorded msg that eventually hands up on me. I can no longer use my washing machine. I began looking on line to see if this was a common problem and it appears it is. Also, appears they had a similar model “Profile” line that replicated what mine is doing, However, my model is not listed as a recall for the sane problem.

purchased a Top load lo water wash GE washing machine 4/12/2011 model number GTWN5050MOWS. Throughout owning this washer we have experienced mold smells coming from it even after attempting to run it on a cycle with bleach. The mold smell has become unbearable. The washer doesn’t turn off if its off kilter and will spin out of balance causing the washing machine to shake dangerously. The washing machine has no control for water level and has ruined clothing. My main concern is the issue with the out of balance not causing the washer to shut down automatically and the horrible strong odor of mold.

The product, in the report: Front loading washer
Caller purchased front loading washer new from Lowe’s in 2006 and had only very minor problems with it until Saturday, October 26th, 2013.
October 26th, 2013 she started a load of wash while she was getting ready to run a couple of errands, she checked as she was leaving and saw that the wash had approximately ten minutes left on it.
She was gone from the house only around twenty to twenty five minutes when she received a phone call from the alarm company telling her that the fire and safety alarms were sounding and they had not been able to obtain an answer to their calls so they were sending both fire and police departments.
The caller went immediately home then found that her washer had caught fire.
Her 21 yr old son told her that he looked at it and saw smoke billowing out of the inside of the tub.
There was no damage to the clothes with the exception of they smell like smoke. There are no injuries to be reported
Caller contacted manufacturer who sent repair to caller’s home on October 29th, 2013.
Caller states that the repair person was extremely rude, disrespectful and presented her with a bill of over $1,500.00 to repair the washer.
Caller said she paid less than $900 for the washer.

After using the unit for a month the machine starting maiking a loud scratching noise and upon further inspection (running the dryer with the door open) I found that there were actually sparks coming from the unit. We called GE to schedule a service appointment, the apointment was for 2 weeks ago on a saturday. GE was a no call, no show. We then rescheduled for today. GE claims that we cancelled the appointment, which of course is false (why wouldnt we want a machine fixed which is a fire hazard?) GE refuses to stand behind their unsafe product. I have never expierenced a company with such a lack of commitment to quality or customer service.

My washing machine caught fire due to a garment getting trapped in the rubber part of the tub. When the machine continued to spin, the trapped garment was smoldering due to the friction. Luckily I was home at the time so I was able to stop the machine, but not after my kitchen filled with smoke.
I’ve been in touch with GE and they are suggesting this was my fault and that somehow the rubber tub was already damaged (it subsequently has become damaged, which I suspect is due to the fire wearing down the rubber, not the other way around).

The product, in the report: GE Washing Machine Model #GTWN5050MOWS S/N #VT161589G
Text of consumer’s letter dated March 6, 2013 to CPSC:
Subj: GE Washer - Model GTWN5050MOWS S/N VT161589G
Subject Washer was purchased on 1/18/11 from Sears. Shortly after installing, I discovered a serious flaw with the spin cycle. This machine has no automatic shutdown for out-of-balance condition. I have never owned a Washer before that did not have an internal overload protector that stopped the spinning automatically in the event that an out-of-balance event occurs. This machine would literally destroy itself without prompt human intervention. On 1/4/12, I wrote GE about this problem but to date have not received any response.
I recently learned that your agency has ordered a recall on both the [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] brands because both brands could shake excessively with an unbalanced load, which may cause the drum to come loose. This is exactly the same problem with subject machine.
It is my hope, that by reporting this to your agency that this GE model washer might also be subject to a recall.

The product, in the report: GE Front Loader Washer Model #WSXH208A1WW Serial #SD403203W White, “Space Saver” (front loader on bottom, dryer on top)
No injuries (luckily) have been sustained, but the recent recall of GE Front Loader Washers should be extended to include other models. I have Model #WSXH208A1WW and the basket has separated from the machine just like the machines listed in the recall. I haven’t used the machine because it sounds like a 747 taking off during the spin cycle. A recent service call provided the details on the basket becoming detached and the cost to repair is astronomical. I’m glad it hasn’t caused injuries, but annoyed that the recall isn’t including my model # listed above. I wonder if there have been other incidences for that model like me?
NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 3, 2012 Release #13-003 Units: About 62,000 Importer: GE Appliances, of Louisville, Ky.
Hazard: The washer’s basket can separate during use and break the washer’s top panel, posing an injury hazard to consumers.

3 - 4 months ago I purchased a GE combination electric washer dryer (model GTUP270EM1WW) from Lowes. Unit operated fine for the first three months before the problems started. The unit started vibrating and shaking violently. It shook so hard that it actually dislodged the exhaust ducts from the machine. I took out the level and made sure everything level. That was OK so I contacted GE and they sent out a repairman. I won’t get into how clueless this guy was as that’s a different issue. He said the drum was defective and ordered a replacement. If the drum was bad it should have been a problem from day one. Crew came and installed it a week later ran a test with nothing in it and said it was fixed. Not the case. Now the machine shakes twice as hard and moves on the floor. Once again checked and made sure it was level.
During these service calls I discovered a couple of other issues. The first one is that the unit that the softener goes in constantly dislodges itself on a regular basis and rattles around the inside. GE rep said that’s because the softener is too heavy. No the problem is that it doesn’t lock into place properly.
The biggest concern is yet to follow. It seems that when the washer hits the spin cycle small items such as socks and underwear get tossed out of the drum and fall into the bottom of the unit where the still wet items lay across the electrical components. I can tell they weren’t accidentally dropped in there because the items were clean.
So as I see it there are two major issues.
There something wrong with the component during the spin cycle. This causes the exhaust duct work to become dislodged. This would be an even more extreme problem if you had a gas version of the product as lint is so easily combustible.
The second issue is that you have wet clothing being dispersed into the inside bottom of the unit and laying across the electrical contacts which I’m sure you know could be a real problem.

The product, in the report: Front loading washing machine from GE
Similar to the failures which resulted in recall of GE washing machines issued Oct 3rd, earlier models have similar problems. Perhaps the designs are similar.

I have experienced several drum failures on model WHDVH626FWW
In my case most repairs were completed under a service agreement. But the most recent one was not and costs several hundred dollars.
There are counter weights bolted to the drum. The last failure, one of the counter weights broke loose, broke the mount on the drum and it knocked the motor off it’s mount.

The product, in the report: GE Front loader Washing Machine Model #wcvh640050ww
I found out today that there has been a recall on GE Profile Washers (Models WPDH8800, WPDH8900, WPDH8910) due to safety concerns regarding the steel basket. I had a front loading GE washer Model wcvh640050) for only 3 years with 4 service calls. The last service call I had my whole laudnry room filled with smoke and when the GE service man came out I was told the stainless steel basket was bad and to repair this it would cost $1000.00. This is so not acceptable for a 3 year old appliance. I wound up purchasing a new appliance but after seeing the news reports on the GE Profile I was wondering if the washer could have had the same problem and GE could have fixed it instead of me getting a new appliance.
Although there was no victim injury due to the shaking nature of the washer (which has happened on more than one occassion) I have damaged dry wall in the laundry room that needs repaired.

(08/31/2012) The consumer stated that she put a load of clothes in the washer. The consumer stated that it took a such long time to complete cycle that she went to see what was wrong. She found that the wash cycle was stuck on fill. This cause the washer to over flow onto the floor. The consumer stated that the washer is on the first floor. Her carpet was soaked and had to be replaced. The water had seeped through the sub flooring into the basement causing water damage to the ceiling.
The consumer stated that she turned the machine off.
The consumer stated that she called ServPro to clean up the water.
(09/01/2012) The consumer stated that she called GE and they told her that they would send out a technician. The technician came out on the next day. He pulled the washer out to check. He advised the consumer that it was caused by a defective pressure switch hose and chamber inside of the washer which he replaced.
The consumer stated that the technician ran the washer for a short time to see if it was working properly. She also stated that she have not used the washer since the incident.
UPDATE: we had electric cords as well as a power strip on the floor. If the water depth had reach much higher it could have posed a serious risk of injury

My front loading GE washer wbvh6240fww started making a lot of noise and smoke started coming out. This is a fire hazard that should be recalled.
I tried calling GE Answer center and they told me I had to pay 79.95 to have a certified technician come and diagnose their faulty product.
Not only they put in danger my life, they want me to pay to have the appliance checked.
I want them to be aware that their products are defective before there are any injuries.

The product, in the report: 4.0 IEC Cu. Ft. King-capacity Front Load Washer
I own at GE front load washer, Model Number WBVH 5300 K0WW. I have had problems with mold 6 months after it was installed. I had a GE service specialist come out and all the recommended was a “[REDACTED]” front load cleaner. I was given instruction to wipe the interior of my machine with a bleach soaked towel after every use, leave the door open all the time when not it use, and to run a clean cycle once a week. None of this has helped, it very incontinent and time consuming. More importantly the mold is getting worse. The GE customer service refuses to help. This is becoming a health issue as we have notice more “cold” and “allergy” like symptoms is our children over the past 6 months. Our clothes and towels have a noticeable odor.

The product, in the report: Washes Clothes and linen- Front load washer
I have had ge front load washer for about three years and from the third month have been battling mold. I have tried to eliminate with over the counter washer cleaning products, bleach, and vinegar. All these methods were suggested by GE, however none have been able to prevent or eliminate the mold. I have a family with three children, my husband and myself and we have been suffering from allergic reactions because of this mold. Our linen and clothes smell strongly of mold and is never clean. My youngest daughter and I suffer the most from constant rhinitis, a cough that never goes away and occasionally skin irritation. I have been doing my laundry at my mothers house and she has much less maintenance of her top load washer than I with my front load. It’s more than just a health issues our whole lives are affected.

The product, in the report: Front Load washer
The washer was making a loud humming noise and not pumping out the water. I checked the appliance manual and the troubleshooting guide indicated that the drain hose may need repositioned. When I leaned over the washer to move the drain hose I got a terrible shock!!!! The front door or something under the washer was leaking and I was standing on a damp carpet. I am feeling very shaky and visibly trembling from the shock which happened 15 minutes ago. My hands and feet are still tingling!!!!
