  1. No one hurt

Made Sep 5, 2025, sent to the company Sep 17, 2025, published by CPSC Oct 1, 2025

The product, in the report: Washer started itself. In looking at unit it was trying to cycle but seemed to be stuck was not operating as it should. Controls on unit did not work, had to unplug unit to stop it.

We have GE Washer GTW540ASPWS-GE 4.6 cu ft High-Efficiency with Sanitize with Oxi Energy Star SN: AV988165G Purchased Feb. 8, 2023 [REDACTED] The problem was that it started by itself and was not operating like it should, had to unplug to get it to stop. If we had not been home when this happened. I believe this could have started a fire and burned the house down. People are not in the habit of having to unplug appliances, they should not be able to start themselves!!!

The product, in the report: GE Washer

Our 4 year old GE High Effiency Washer stopped running and the smoke was coming out the closed washer door. I unplugged the unit and called 9-1-1 not knowing if it would go up in flames. The laundry room filled with smoke as did the whole downstairs. The firemen came and pulled the washer away from the wall. They determined that the motor had burned itself out. They instructed me not to use the washer again.
