The product, in the report: White, dry and washer. CLOTHES WASHER 120 VOLTS 60 HZ 11 AMPS
I am reporting a safety hazard involving a GE washer that sparked and smoked following a repair performed by a GE/[REDACTED] technician.
The washer was initially serviced due to failure to drain or spin properly. During the first visit, the technician did not perform a full inspection. Shortly after, the washer shut off completely and would not power on. On a second visit, the technician diagnosed the issue as a failed motherboard and ordered a replacement.
When the replacement motherboard was installed by the authorized technician, the washer immediately sparked and began smoking, creating a potential fire hazard. The technician then stated the issue was due to an electrical problem and advised me to hire an electrician.
I hired a licensed electrician to inspect the outlet and electrical supply. The electrician confirmed the outlet was functioning properly at 120 volts and stated that the washer itself posed a potential safety hazard. Based on the symptoms, the electrician indicated the failure was likely internal (such as an inverter or collateral damage to internal components), not an external electrical issue.
The washer is currently unplugged and not in use due to safety concerns. I have requested service records and documentation from GE regarding these repair visits and the technicians findings but have not received them. I no longer feel safe operating or servicing this appliance after the sparking and smoking incident caused during a manufacturer-authorized repair.

The product, in the report: GE top loader washing machine, white.
Our GE washing machine exploaded in our laundry/bathroom area. This is not a misuse issue, this is a safety hazard. The washing machine exploded and caused parts from the washing machine to fly out of the unit, a piece from the washer hit my husband in the face/neck area. This is a major defect in the unit and the company is not taking this matter seriously.

The product, in the report: Front load HE washing machine
I was washing a load of bath towels and the very thick glass door of my GE front load washing machine spontaneously shattered. GE sent a technician to examine the machine. He stated that the glass must have been defective and that tiny shards of glass are now throughout the pump, etc. GE wanted to repair the machine in spite of the technician stating that future use of the machine wouldn’t be safe because of the glass shards. I believe that children and other individuals in proximity of one of these machines when the glass shatters could be at risk of severe injury due to the extreme speed with which the drums rotate. I was fortunate that there were no injuries as the result of the incident in my home.

The product, in the report: GE Top Load Washing Machine (5.0 cu. ft. Capacity Smart Washer with Stainless Steel Basket) Model GTW750CSL1WS
My family and I were relaxing at home one evening when we heard a loud explosion accompanied by the sound of crunching metal; like that of a vehicle collision. The whole house shook and the sound was so loud that my wife and I were immediately alarmed and ran to check on our young children. Upon investigation, I discovered that our top-load GE washing machine (GTW750CSL1WS) had violently spun around in our laundry room with enough force to significantly damage the dryer and utility sink that were on each side of the washer. It was evident that the washer’s heavy drum had become separated from the unit during a spin cycle which caused the whole machine to explode. The top was blown off and the sides blasted outward with such force that they appear to be damaged beyond repair. Fortunately, no one was injured but I am filing this report out of concern for other consumers. I am shocked to know that if my one-year old or any other member of my family had been in the laundry room or in the doorway when this event had occurred, they could have been killed or seriously injured given the obvious, violent force of the washing machine explosion and spin. Also of concern, broken pieces of sharp plastic were found in the laundry room after having been forcefully ejected and some were even found in the room across the hallway from the laundry room door. Furthermore, golf-ball sized plastic knobs that sit underneath the top of the washer had been thrown from the washer. The washing machine also flung a brown, smelly sludge over the clothes inside the drum and on the walls and floor of the laundry room. Finally, it is important to note that the cycle in the washing machine was just a normal, small load of white dish towels and underwear and this GE washing machine was only 19 months old.

I have a GE GTW680BSJ4WS top load washing machine that will turn on automatically with the lid open. The only way to stop the machine is to unplug the cord. The control panel is unresponsive. This is the third time that the washer has turned on by itself.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Harmony Washer, white, energy star
I was doing a load of laundry in the washer. About half way through the cycle I heard a loud noise and found out that it was the washing machine. It sounded like a spark/static noise that lasted about 10 seconds. I went to the laundry room and it smelled as if something burnt and there was smoke. I opened the washer and it was sparking inside and causing more smoke. I grabbed the fire extinguisher to be safe; I honestly thought it was going to start a fire. Once the sparking stopped, I unplugged it. My husband took a look and saw that something had blown up inside the machine.

The product, in the report: GE Harmony Profile Washing Machine
We purchased a GE Harmony washing machine model WPGT9350 in 2005. It has worked fine until this morning. My wife started a load of laundry and once she hit the start button it started to spark continuously and black smoke began pouring out of the top of the machine. I had to turn off the main circuit breaker to stop it. I took the top apart and found the main circuit board motherboard was burned and had started melting.

The product, in the report: 2003 GE front load washer
The drum of our 2003 GE front load washer Model #WSXH208A1WW has separated from the machine just like other GE washing machines listed in the recall. When operating, the spin cycle is so loud it sounds like a freight train and vibrates uncontrollably. I am afraid to run it fearing that the drum during high rpm’s will fly out of the machine and injure or kill someone in the area! This problem has existed for a few months. Prior problem was the shock absorbers. Both bottom absorbers died last year and caused the washing machine to bounce all over the washer room!!! Dangerous as it pinched and trapped my hand between the washer and dryer while it shook and bounced around! Took hours to access and replace the absorbers. I am now awaiting delivery of new washer but must continue to use this one in the meantime. I was quoted $500 for parts alone to fix the drum and bearing problem, labor additional. The recall of this GE Front Loader Washer should definitely be extended to include this model.

The product, in the report: GE ADORA MODEL NUMBER - WHDVH660HWWR (WHITE); FRONT LOAD WASHER; SIZE 3.8
On June 26, 2016, smoke started coming from my washer. I was alerted by the issue because my dog started barking and would not stop. I smelled smoke and notice smoke vapors coming from my laundry room. I go to the laundry room and noticed smoke coming from the back of the washer. I tried to turn the washer off but the control buttons wouldn’t work. I had to unplug the washer to get it to stop. I had my work clothes inside and could not open the door. My kitchen filled with smoke and smoke started spreading to my living room. I had to turn on the exhaust fan in the kitchen and laundry room. I had to open all kitchen windows as well as living room windows. I opened the washing detergent receptacle and smoke came from there as well so I knew the inside of the washer was filled with smoke. I plugged the washer back in the outlet to try to get the control buttons to work so I could open the washer and remove the clothes. The power did not come back on. I waited about 10 minutes and the control panel lit up. I was able to open and remove the clothes. My work clothes smelled like they had been in a fire. Of course I couldn’t wash them again to get rid of the smell because I was afraid the washer would catch on fire as well as my house.
I performed an online search of the event to see what may be the cause. To my dismay, there were several consumers who had the exact same issue and complained about this model and the lack of response from GE to recall this model. I completed a recall search on the GE website and found a recall for a similar washer (which look exactly like my model with the exception of the water pump being in a different place). GE’s website states - “GE Front Loading Washing Machines Recall (2006–2010 models)....The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the General Electric Company (GE) have announced a recall of 181,055 GE front load washing machines, manufactured from December 2006 until February 1, 2010. These units are white, have a round door and can be identified by the control panel unique to these particular models. Submit the information below or call the GE Recall Hotline to determine if your washer is included in the recall.”My washer model is WHDVH660HWW. My washer fits the description of the washer above - white, round door, and appears to be same control panel . The washer model pictured that was recalled which is similar to my model is [REDACTED]. I am concerned that there have been so many complaints about this particular model smoking and burning clothes. There are even youtube videos showing smoke emitting from this exact model. However, there is no recall for this model. Is it just coincidental that so many consumers with this exact model as mine are having or had the exact same problem. My washer was purchased in 2008. I am quite sure it was manufactured in between 2006-2010 as GE website states for the recalled washer.
Does someone’s home have to catch fire and burn or become seriously injured in order for GE to recall this model? If I had not been home when this event occurred to immediately act, the washer would have caught fire and my home would have burned down. Not only that, but my dog would have burned as well not being able to exit the house on her own. If that would have happened, I would have filed a suit against GE given the overwhelming complaints about this issue going back to at least 4 years. GE needs to issue a recall on model number WHDVH660HWW before consumers become seriously injured. It poses a safey concern and is hazardous. A consumer even complained on their website about the model emitting smoke and gave a poor review of the model on GE’s website.
It is my hope that the matter will be investigated and GE is mandated to issue a recall of model WHDVH660HWW before anyone is seriously injured, if they refuse to do a voluntary recall.
