  1. No one hurt

Made May 27, 2016, sent to the company Jun 7, 2016, published by CPSC Jun 21, 2016

The product, in the report: Overhead garage door opener

Truck was parked under garage door. Garage door was closed, accidentally. The contact reversal system failed and damaged the garage door, the force of the motor ripped the J-arm from the garage door. This would have crushed a child or a pet. The product is overhead door, 1/2 HP, model # 696CD/B Approx 5 years old. Installed by builder. We called the manufacturer, who refused who refused to come out and inspect it to see the reason for the failure. We were directed to call the local dealer. We are concerned that this is a manufacturer flaw and it is not being properly addressed. Thank you

  2. No one hurt

The product, in the report: Steel garage door, 8’x16’, white, raised panel, insulated

The 8’x16’ steel garage door failed dramatically while being lowered. The bracket attaching the spring-tensioned cable on one side of the door fractured, causing the door to be unsupported on that side. That side fell, causing the door to become tilted to the extent that it jammed, bent the track on the other side of the door, liberated several rollers, and twisted one of the door horizontal panels. The stuck door caused the garage door opener to attempt to retract the door, ripping the top horizontal panel loose. The top panel’s rollers were liberated from the track, so it was supported only by the attachment to the arm of the door opener. The top panel swung violently and put a small gouge in the garage ceiling sheet rock. The entire door has to be replaced. Fortunately, there were no people close enough to be injured and there were no cars in the garage at that time.
