  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Jan 12, 2025, sent to the company Jan 17, 2025, published by CPSC Feb 3, 2025

The product, in the report: Ideal Door Overhead Garage Door Left-Winding Unit for EZ-SET Torsion Spring Model Number: Left-Winding-Unit Menards MENARDS SKU: 4311455

Purchased and installed Ideal brand Garage Door with EZ-Set torsion spring. Garage Door System was installed the summer of 2024. a few days ago, the EZ-Set torsion spring winding mechanism failed, resulting in torsion spring becoming detached heavy garage door to fall and the garage door overcame the weight of the belt drive opener and dropped. The cause of the failure failed (broken) plastic tabs in the tensioner that are responsible with turning and maintaining torsional force on the spring. These tabs are fragile and should be made stronger (perhaps out of metal) to withstand the extreme force (during all climates including cold temps as we get here in Minnesota). The failure occurred while the door was being raised, so if a person or pet were to be under the door at that time - serious injury (or worse) could have occurred. After I experienced this failure, I found another person on youtube with the same failure - so this is NOT an isolated incident. I did reach out to Ideal door company and they are asking all the warranty related questions - so I simply informed them I was sharing this with you and not pursuing warranty . The reason I am reporting this is my concern for safety and that hey need to improve the design - perhaps recall?
