The product, in the report: Genie Garage Door Opener, model 1055B-KV
The garage door opener started to buzz and later it started to smoke and make a burning smell. It shows signs of internal fire.
Genie Garage Door Opener, model 1055B-KV started to make a buzzing noise, loud enough to be heard from the room above the garage. I called the manufacturer, Genie. After many phone calls, emails and submissions, Genie decided to send me a replacement part to be installed by the home owner. In the interim, the unit began to make a burning smell and puffs of smoke. Homeowner disconnected the unit from the electrical outlet. Genie has provided written instruction to disassemble the unit to install the replacement part. The homeowner followed the written instructions and disassembled the unit. The homeowner discovered the cause of the buzzing, to be an electrical fire inside the unit.

The product is made with plastic parts and internal gears. When the parts shattered, the safety release would not operate and the parts jammed the drive motor. I can envision a serious injury or death if the safety release cannot be operated. I contacted

The product, in the report: Automatic Garage Door Opener, PowerMax 1500
The consumer stated that the garage door opener was installed by a subcontractor about 3.5 years ago.
The consumer stated, on 12/27/15, the garage door opener stopped working. The consumer disabled the door opener to be able to manually close the garage.
The consumer’s husband examined the unit the next day (12/28/15). He unplugged the door opener, and checked the electric panel. Everything looked fine and there were no fuses that were blown out.
The consumer’s husband plugged the door opener back in. As soon as he plugged in the door opener, the main unit sparked and smoked. The consumer’s husband left the door opener unplugged after that. He instructed the consumer to not touch it and contact Genie.
The consumer spoke to a representative at Genie on 12/30/15. They informed her that her unit does not fall under the recall. The consumer asked if other people have experienced this problem with openers not included in the recall. The representative informed the consumer that they cannot do anything under the warranty or provide any other assistance since it is not recalled. They asked her to troubleshoot the opener. The consumer did not feel comfortable troubleshooting something that was sparking and smoking.

No one hurt Made Aug 7, 2014, sent to the company Aug 15, 2014, published by CPSC Aug 29, 2014
The product, in the report: Garage door opener, three piece track, screw drive
I purchased a Genie PowerLift 900, 1/2 HP, Model 2562 from Home Depot in Atascadero, CA. I assembled and installed it on 7/27/2014. During the initial step in setting up the opener, where you push the Down button on the bottom of the motor assembly, the opener closed the door and then proceeded to break the drive screw housing in to two pieces. Two pieces of the track stayed attached to the house/door, while the last piece of the track stayed attached to the Motor housing. Fortunately no cars were hurt and I was not hurt. A photograph of the failed unit is available. I am a retired mechanical engineer who worked around machinery throughout my career and I can assure you that the three track locking sections were fully engaged at assembly. Also at assembly, I was somewhat concerned about the high amount of force it took to move the screw shaft slider when assembling the last screw section, which required a rubber mallet to a block of wood against the screw shaft. I can only assume that the “preset” down force limit malfunctioned, allowing the stalled trolley to eject the screw shaft backwards thus forcing a disconnect in the track. With two cars in the garage and me standing under the unit pressing the Down button when it happened, the potential for injury or car damage was very high. The track locking brackets should be redesigned or have a couple of bolts added at each connection point to assure positive retention. As I consider this type unit a design hazard, I took it back to Home Depot and purchased a different brand.
I sent a copy of the above, including a photograph, to Genie on 7/30/14, but they did not respond. [REDACTED]

No one hurt Made Feb 26, 2014, sent to the company May 8, 2014, published by CPSC May 22, 2014
The product, in the report: Garage Opener No, returned to manufacturer 6/7/13 per their request-Genie Silent Max 1000/Model #304. Genie shipped a replacement Silent Max 1200 w/ series II wall console & it was installed per warranty 6/4/2013. Since the first unit caught fire & the second malfunctioned, the consumer asked Home Depot to return the item out of safety concerns. They happily complied on 2/6/14 and the consumer purchased a competitor’s garage door opener with the refunded amount. Finally, the consumer reported this incident to all the appropriate parties and eventually to the CPSC to avert people of her experience with Genie. The consumer is disappointed with not only their products but also their lack of concern and with customer service regarding the consumer’s case. The consumer hopes that the CPSC will consider her report and add both of these models and their wall consoles to the recall, as needed. Thank you.
Caller stated that her garage opener started emitting black smoke in the garage she contacted the fire department immediately. However, when they came out she was informed that the unit’s fire was self contained and did not spread.
5/2013 The manufacturer was contacted and an installer was sent out to install a different model (1200) which they informed her was an upgraded model (6/4/2013). She mailed back the model that was defective. The new unit started operating the lights on 1/2014, which stayed on. She contacted the manufacturer and complained that the unit was causing her to pay excessive utility bills and would like them to fix the problem. She stated they were not proactive to her issues and informed her that she would need to fix the problem herself.
Caller feels that she was experiencing similar problems of Recall#14-114. Hazard:The control board can overheat, posing a fire hazard. She purchased another unit.
Caller feels that the silent Max 1000 should be added to the recall.

The product, in the report: Automatic Garage Door Opener
Genie SilentMax 1000, Model 3042 Garage door opener draws more than 20 amps. In a properly functioning household electrical circuit the above noted condition will simply trip the circuit breaker. Should the defective door opener be installed on a circuit with a malfunctioning breaker the resulting circuit overload could present a fire hazard.

I bought a garage door from HOME DEPOT IN ROCKFOR, ILLINOIS. I had it installed by them, along with a Genie opener. 20 days ago, after working perfectly for 4 years, a broom handle got in the way, usually if a small object or any incidental object, even a spider web, gets it the way, any pressure it meets, the door reverses. This time it made a horrible churning noise. I was in the garage, am permanently handicapped and got the bright idea of going, and removing the broom handle that usually any pressure or object it touches as I said it reverses, but this was a frightful noise and sight. the door was going sideways, it was pulling towards the right, roller flying all over, the right railing twisting like a pretzel.. tried to put my arm to hold it up, and got a hematoma from my wrist to my elbow, then tried waving my foot in front of the eye, and the door kept grinding horribly and coming down. My doctor told me I was crazy, I could have fallen and got crushed, and I live alone .. who would find me, but dead. The lady who has been stringing me along, a woman who was nice as pie for 20 days told me today, you never almost got killed, as if she knew me or my situation, my doctor does. and she had seen pictures of the damage to my arm done the first day. I was not seeking any legal recompense, I just wanted my rail fixed so I could get in and out of my house in some comfort since it pains me to walk, i NEED 3 SUP.BELTSTO WALK have an impact fracture on my right wrist, and a torn shoulder, and now the crushed left arm. Since she sent her boys over to make sure it was not her fault her attitude changed . .from fairy to witch of the North! Go get whoever sold me the Genie .. well they brought it with them, it mist have been acquired by their company. Incidentally, the handle was not in the railing it was across the path,!

The product, in the report: garage door opener
I purchased a Genie Powerlift 900 garage door opener at a local home improvement store. Installing the opener was not difficult, but I could not complete the programming - the unit would not pass the control limit test and reverse when I closed it on a board. I found an addendum page with new instructions for setting down and up travel limits that was separate from the instruction manual, but those new instructions were not very clear. I finally looked at the manufacturer’s website, which offered a file called “Programming Instructions-New.” The third set of instructions indicated that at the end of the down limit step, the door would be fully open. Instead, when I followed the last set of instruction, the opener traveled too far and bent the top panel of my garage door. I am very concerned that other purchasers may get to the point I did in following the original instructions in the manual, which worked up to the point of the control limit test, and skip that important safety feature because the door goes up and down. Quite apart from the damage it caused in my home, I believe that The Genie Company’s negligence in distributing these unworkable instructions may put other families at risk.

The product, in the report: Excelerator Genie Garage Door Opener
The “Excelerator Genie Garage Door Opener” is defective in its intended function and poses danger to people, animals and property. It opened the garage door very rapidly as it is intended and designed. But by opening the garage door too rapidly, it damages and breaks apart the connection to the door posing a danger of the garage door falling back down in free falling fashion.
I understand that this product was removed from the market in 2005 for this very reason and has been re-engineered to open more slowly. But there are many remaining unit present in people’s homes and continue to pose a risk.
I have never been contacted by Genie to be informed of this danger despite the fact that I am registered with themas an owner since its purchase in 2005.
Thanks,

The product, in the report: Garage door opener, for single door
About a week prior to March 18, 2011, I came home from work. My husband had opened the garage door. When I got out of the car I smelt something that smelled like burning plastic or rubber. I asked him what was burning. He said nothing. I went out the back door of the garage and I could smell it on the patio so I thought maybe one of the neighbors was burning something. Prior to March 18, 2011 I usually used the garage door twice a day--once to leave to work and then when I came home. On March 18, 2011 I exited my garage door at aproximately 10:00 AM and came back in at 2:00 PM. I immediately came into the house. I had used the garage door opener to close the garage door. At about 4:00 PM, I woke up from my nap and my husband told me to go out to the garage and look at it. I did so. I did not see anything, but I smelt a heavy odor of smoke, again it smelled like burning rubber or plastic. He told me to look up. I did. The garage door opener plastic cover had melted onto the top of my car. The top of the ceiling, above the garage door opener was black with smoke. When my husband installed the garage door opener in 2004, he had not installed in directly to the ceiling, He had used a 1x6 and built it to support the garage door opener. That is what saved our house from burning. We contacted Genie and they had someone from Overhead Doors come out. The installer was impressed with the way our door openers were installed. He told us that was the best installation he had ever seen. We sent the motor and pictures to Genie. They told they were not liable because it was not the motor that had caught on fire. It was external. We agree with Genie it was not the motor of the garage door opener. It was the plastic, opaque cover. The plastic cover of the Genie garage door opener has an inside lip or small shelf. Prior to March 18, 2011, we had seen a small finch in our garage. It had built a nest on the shelf onthe inside of the plastic cover. However, we did not know that until after the fire. The plastic cover is opaque and there is no way to know that anything had gotten into it unless the cover is taken off. When do you take off the cover? Only if a bulb burns out. We could not even remember when we had replaced the bulbs. Our contention is that there is a safety issue concerning the opaque, plastic cover. Because the cover is opaque, it cannot be determined if something--spiders, mice, roaches, (in our case a bird), had gotten into the cover. It is open enough for anyting, including debris to get up on that shelf on the inside. We cannot help but wonder how many fires that may have started in a garage can be contributed to an incident such as ours. We were lucky because of they way our opener was installed. If the 1x6 had not been directly installed over the garage door opener, the fire would have caught our ceiling on fire. Because of what is stored in most garages, it stands to reason that it would be difficult to determine the cause of the fire. Or, if it had gotten into our attic, it would also stand to reason that someone would have said it was an electrical fire or something causing the fire in our attic. Again, we believe the cause of the fire is the way the cover is designed and it opaqueness. It melted very quickly and was very hot. It melted the paint off the top of my car down to the bare metal. We do have have photographs of the damage. The garage door opener is model H4000 A made by Genie Company.
