The product, in the report: Craftsman garage door opener Red 3/4 belt

On 8/16/25, while sitting stationary my Craftsman garage door opener unit suddenly emitted smoke and caught fire. The fire was significant and would have spread to my home if I had not been present to extinguish it immediately. This product poses a serious fire hazard to any consumer using it.

The product, in the report: Garage door opener

Our Craftsman/Chamberlain garage door logic board, travel module, and sensors failed and drove the door into ground and continued driving until the spring and other attached parts flew free from the wall. The driver continued to drive until the electricity to the unit was turned off. Luckily no one was in the garage or they could have been crushed by the door and/or struck by debris.

The product, in the report: Craftsman Garage Door Opener

We purchased a new Garage Door Opener from Sears Model 139.54931 built by Chamberlain. We followed all instructions in the manual. On page 32 Adjustment Step 2 Test the Safety Reversal System they tell you to place a wood 2x4 flat under the door, activate the door in the downward direction when it touches the wood the door should reverse. The door did not reverse we checked all settings and installation many times. We found if you jam the door down using the adjustments then you can preform the test successfully. The problem is the force necessary to do this causes the travel rail to bow and keeps a load on the system at all times when the door is down. We called Sears twice the next call connected us to Chamberlain technical. We went through all settings several times the service tech said to place the 2x4 on the 2 inch side which means it was sticking up approximately 4 inches. The door now reversed. The tech said it is now fixed. We asked what would happen if our 2 year old grandson stuck his arm under the door (it would not reverse) his arm is about 2 inches in diameter. We then tried using a paper towel roll under the door it reversed after crushing the roll. We then got our bathroom scale and brought the door down on it (not very scientific) the results of several times lowering the door produced a minimum 160 pounds and a maximum of 250 pounds of force. The tech tried to tell us this was caused by the weight of the door we asked why the travel rail bowed if the weight of the door caused the issue. This door opener is a disaster waiting to happen and needs to be looked into. There are no force adjustments such as can be found on older openers. According to the manual the force is set by the internal electronic circuits.

The product, in the report: Belt driven residential 3/4HP DC motor garage door opener

Two weeks before the incident date, the spring of my garage door broke. I had the spring replaced within 2 hours after I noticed. Shortly after that, I noticed that my garage door opener was making some unusual purring when opening, but I did not make much of it. A few days later, the lights on the unit started to fail to light up. They eventually did after a few seconds. This happened a couple of times. A week before the incident, the backup battery of the garage door opener went bad. I got a replacement battery, and the day I replaced it, before I installed the battery, I noticed that the lights of the opener where flashing slightly. A small burning smell was in the garage, but since I had just come back from a commute, I did not make much of it. I installed the battery and the unit reported the new battery and indicated it was charging. Later in the evening, as I was going out in the garage and the lights turned on, I started to see smoke and afterwards, a flame of up to 5 inches tall came from the side of the unit. I managed to unplug the power and the fire ceased. I also unplugged the battery, since I saw some led lights in the unit still on. When I did that, the battery was not warm at all. I don’t think the unit should have caught fire like that.

The product, in the report: Garage Door Opener

The caller stated that her son accidetally pulled the emergency release and the garage door came crashing down while the door was open. The door should not be able to close while it is open with the emergency release, which is to manually operate the door while it is closed. If her children were present this incident would have been fatal. Two other children were in the garage at that time and could have been killed if they had been right under door.

Caller stated that all the garage openers have the same flaw and this incident is not restricted to a particular brand.

The manufacturer was not contacted. The caller feels that the garage opener is a safety hazard and should be reported.
