The product, in the report: Chamberlain B750 Belt Drive Smart Garage Door Opener

This garage door opener was installed 7 years ago and is used 2-3 times daily. The day of the event it was operating normally with no signs of malfunction. I was actually working in the garage in the vicinity of the opener for some time immediately preceding the event. I opened the garage door to go out to the car, closed it once outside, and then re-opened it needing to go back into the house. The door was left open at this time. Once inside the garage I smelled a strong acrid/chemical smell that I thought was from construction/landscape work at a neighbors home. I hurried into the house not wanting to breathe in whatever this chemical was. After 2-3 minutes at most, I opened the garage door to see if the air had cleared and found the garage door opener had ignited and was burning. I quickly shut the main breaker to the house and used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. I first wondered if a catastrophic light bulb failure could have caused this, but the only scorched area is clearly in the vicinity of the internal control board and any melting of the light socket seems secondary. Had this occurred at any other time this would have resulted in a house fire with significant property loss and possible loss of life.

The product, in the report: Garage Door Opener

Our garage door opener crushed our garage door. It overrode the down force sensor. Chamberlain Garage Door Opener: B6713T No one was using the product. It operated on it’s own. No injuries. Just damage to the door that required it to be replaced.

Details: That day we were working at home (remotely). The garage door was already down from the prior evening. About 8:15am we received a My [REDACTED] notice on our [REDACTED] that the garage door had gone down. Then a second message that the garage door had gone down. And so, I went to investigate. I found that the garage door opener trolley was up against the idler pully and the top two panels of the door were severely bent. I removed power from the opener, then pulled the emergency release to disengage the arm from the trolley so the downward pressure on the door would be removed.

The product, in the report: Clopay garage door and Chamberlain garage door opener bought from and installed by: DC Garage Door Services 9815 Sam Furr Rd J-236 Huntersville, NC 28078 Phone: 704-574-8844 dcgaragedoorrepair@gmail.com

In July 2021 I contacted DC Garage Door Services to replace my existing garage door and garage door opener. The cost of the door, opener and installation was $3500 and has been paid in full. Less than a week after the garage door was installed, I went to close the garage door. From the angle I was standing it looked like my car was not in the path of the garage door. Unfortunately it was not and the garage door hit my car and continued to attempt to close and it kept trying to close until I hit the reverse button. Because it kept closing on my car the door and frame crumpled like a cheap suit. I was stunned and horrified as I watched my new garage door crumple up. I called the company who installed the door and the same technician that installed it came out and told me I would be responsible for the repairs. At the time I was so upset I wasn’t thinking straight. I could not afford to spend the money for repairs. The technician was able to straighten the frame with his hand and we were able to operate it although the new door had dents. I figured I would have to live with it until I could afford the repairs. Well a few weeks later as it was shutting the door crumpled again. I once again called the company that had installed it. This time I remembered that our old garage door was shut multiple times over 25 years when there was an obstacle in the way and it always auto reversed. It would auto reverse if a leaf was in it’s path. So I did some research and discovered that it is a federal law that all residential garage doors have 2 sensors to prevent the door from crushing people and cars, a light sensor and pressure sensor. I even did a test that the article suggested to see if your doors sensors were working. I put a roll of paper towels in the path of the door and shut and it hit the towels and kept shutting. The same technician came back to our house. This time I was not at home so he talked to my son and took absolutely no responsibility. He said it was all our fault and we would have to pay for repairs. The technician was gone when I returned so I called the company and I asked for an estimate for the repairs and I also asked that the supervisor call me and explain why this was our fault. No one ever called me back. Since then I have sent complaints to the BBB, the NC Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission. The letter that they sent to the BBB in response to my complaint stated that my son broke the garage door and that they had told me they would work with me on the cost to make it more affordable. First of all, my son was not even there when it crumpled the first time and at no time did I even mention my son and they never even responded to my request for an estimate and an explanation, so their response was one big fat lie. If I have paid a premium to have a garage door and opener installed, then before they leave they better make sure all safety sensors are working properly or inform me that they did not do that. If the refuse to replace my bent panels, they should at least be responsible for making sure the sensors are in complete order. That is their responsibility.

The product, in the report: Chamberlain B970 garage door opener.

Installed new garage door opener. I have installed several and inspected thousands. This Chamberlain unit and another new one they sent, both will not detect an object that is near the center, and 4 to 6 inches above the floor which is well within the track of the safety beam which is 6 inches above the floor. After about 40 hours of troubleshooting over the course of 8 weeks involving Chamberlain sending me new sensors, new logic board and ultimately a whole new unit, the problem persists. They agree that there is a problem. The problem area is along the beam areas not close to a sensor. Today I discovered that the safety beam and sensor technology is not compatible with the basic 3 year old floor paint. It’s not shiny epoxy, just plain gray floor paint. I had a moment of genius and covered the floor with blankets along the door area and discovered that the safety system starts working as it should. I have a video to show this. I also tested the other new unit with bare concrete and it performs correctly. I have a video to show this too. It is the relationship of the paint to the beam in a way best described as an absorption. The beam is hugging the painted floor and bypassing an obstruction that is not flush. There is another troubleshooting process issue that causes the beam breakage testing to not work by just watching the green light while the door is closed, the beam also hugs the door and sneaks past a reasonable obstruction. There is another issue too, the installation instructions say to test the safety beam with the box that the unit came in. This would be a good idea but in this case it causes a very serious safety issue to be overlooked by inexperienced garage door installers and home owners. In summary, these units are unsafe with painted garage floors. The correction may be a design change, or a more risky approach of just telling people about this. If the installation instructions and system remain the same there will be consumers with unsafe doors. Doors have been required to have fully operational safety beams since around 1993. I did get to speak with a supervisor after several weeks who was helpful but had not heard of this type of problem. An older unit by same company does not have a problem with the floor paint. These products should be compatible with floor paint six inches from the sensors. The problem persists even if the height of the sensors is lowered or raised.

On August 6, 2015 my Chamberlain garage door opener started on fire. We caught it in time to put it out with a fire extinguisher before it ignited the ceiling and other items in proximity to it. The garage door opener was the only thing that was damaged (some minor smoke and fire extinguisher dust damage). We were fortunate to not have cars in the garage as burning plastic and battery acid/goo was dropping on the floor.

Model description: This is a belt drive unit that has a battery backup and therefore a DC motor. The unit also has an LCD wall switch with a motion sensor so the lights on the unit turn on from motion in the garage.

The unit operated normally for over one year. It was installed as per the manufacturer instructions. My home is 12 years old – there are no issues with electrical. I only use incandescent bulbs (100W) in the garage door opener. This particular Chamberlain model is rated for incandescent bulbs up to 100W and CFLs up to 26W. Interestingly, the light bulbs were relatively undamaged from the fire.

I have been in contact with Chamberlain and their response and help has been good. They are concerned about this incident and are replacing the unit. They have also requested to have the burned up unit sent to them so they can investigate what caused the fire. I have no issue with how Chamberlain has responded – their response has met my expectations.

I am submitting this report so that there is record of this incident. Since a 911 fire call was not made, the fire department will not be reporting on this incident.

I have photos of the garage door opener that I took just a few minutes after we put the fire out. If these are of interest I will be happy to provide them.

The product, in the report: Chamberlain Liftmaster Professional 1/2 HP garage door opener. Model 3220. Date code: 05/05

Activated garage door opener (via remote) to close: As the door closed, you could hear the door speed up and then slam onto the garage floor. When I then tried to open the door via remote, the trolley moved along on the drive screw but the door did not lift. Visual check showed that the trolley had separated from the door linkage. Further inspection showed that the “engagement” mechanism (actually a plastic bar) was not fully seated into the trolley. This is because the cam on the emergency release handle pivot prevented the plastic bar from fully seating. In order to continue to use the garage door, I have now fully re-seated the plastic bar into the trolley using a screw I have installed. The emergency door handle and rope have been removed. Note that no wear was evident on the plastic bar. I believe this is a very dangerous situation as the unexpected complete release of the door allows it to slam onto the garage floor possibly injuring someone.

Gargage Door Opener’s wiring partially caught on fire. This caused smoke and the smell of burnt plastic in the garage.

The relay that controls the lights on the opener stopped working a few months prior to the incident. Then the relay started working again about 2 weeks before the incident and failed causing the burning of the Opener’s circuit board and various wires in the Opener’s motor housing.
