The product, in the report: water heater

The submitter is reporting his unit because he believes it produces extremely hot water and it poses a burn hazard. He purchased the unit from Rozga Plumbing and Heating and they also installed the unit on December 8, 2016.

He said around November of 2017 he noticed that the hot water coming from the faucet was extremely hot. He contacted the firm about the issue and they advised him to contact the installer. The submitter contacted the installer and they came out on December 4, 2017 to replace the gas valve.

However, the issue persisted and the submitter contacted the firm again. The firm sent out a local technician to inspect the unit on January 31, 2018. The technician found that the hot water coming from the faucet was 132.4 degrees Fahrenheit. The technician said he would reach out to the firm and they arranged for another technician to examine the unit on February 7, 2018. The second technician checked the temperature of the water coming from the unit and it was 108 degrees Fahrenheit. The technician then checked the hot water coming from the faucet and it was above 130 degrees for about 5 minutes then it dropped to about 108 degrees. The submitter was told that this issue is normal and coincides with how the unit should be working. But the submitter is concerned that the hot water can scald his young grandchildren and this issue is a safety defect. The submitter said the hot water is this hot at every faucet and shower in the home.

The product, in the report: Bradford White 40 gallon electric hot water heater.

My husband went to nap on December 26, 2016. I went food shopping. When I came home he was up and said, I could not sleep something is on fire and I think it is in our unit. We searched our condo and the building and finally I went to utility closet. Our water heater had large scorch marks and smoke coming out of the control panel. Our heating unit with return vent is right next to it and the heating unit was pulling the smoke into the return thus causing the smoke to be blown into our heating system.

We turned main circuit breaker off and called fire department. They removed the panel and found that the insulation had caught fire and the mechanisms were completely fried. The unit is older but the fire marshall said he has never seen something like this.

Made Oct 2, 2013, sent to the company Oct 24, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 7, 2013

The product, in the report: 40 gallon automatic storage hot water heater

This hot water heater was installed by a licensed plumber on March 9, 2004. As best as we can determine, the thermostat on this hot water heater malfunctioned causing the hot water heater to over heat the water. As the pressure increased, the relief valve failed to work. The tank became seriously deformed (the bottom was pushed out) and it began to leak.
