No one hurt Made Jul 14, 2026, sent to the company Jul 17, 2026, published by CPSC Jul 31, 2026
The product, in the report: 24V battery-powered ride-on toy vehicle molded after a Can-Am Maverick X3 off-road buggy. This is the “PRO” edition, which is black in color. The vehicle is a large, two-seat toy designed for kids with dimensions of approximately 57” L x 33.25” W x 31.3” H. It is equipped with inflatable rubber tires, rear suspension, high-torque gearboxes, and runs on a 24V electrical battery system.
What happened that made you want to report? A 24V ride-on toy buggy was being operated when the built-in electrical thermal circuit breaker tripped under load. Because this vehicle lacks any mechanical backup brake and relies entirely on an active electrical circuit for braking resistance, tripping the breaker completely eliminated all braking capabilities. The vehicle immediately dropped into a frictionless “free-spin” freewheeling state and rolled backward out of control down a mild slope. The incident happened twice. On both occasions, the vehicle rolled backward out of control down a sloped area and directly into an active, public residential roadway with traffic. What type of product(s) were being used? A 24V children’s ride-on vehicle marketed as an off-road buggy. Brand: Big Toys Direct Model: Can-Am Maverick X3 Kids Ride-On Buggy (SKU: BTDK-CA001RS-PRO) Who was using the product(s)? Two young children (ages 4 and under), weighing a combined total of approximately 70 pounds, which is well within the manufacturer’s advertised limits. How were the product(s) being used? The vehicle was being driven in a normal, residential front yard and driveway on a standard, mild incline. Were there any injuries? No physical injuries occurred, but the defect created an immediate, life-threatening hazard by repeatedly sending the children rolling out of control backward into an active road with traffic. Additional Technical Defect Details: The manufacturer’s customer service representative confirmed via phone that this complete loss of braking is an intentional engineering trait of the vehicle’s design when the circuit trips. Furthermore, the representative recommended highly dangerous workarounds, suggesting that the consumer either install a heavier-duty fuse or completely rewire the vehicle to bypass/remove the safety fuse entirely.
