The product, in the report: Zojirushi VE Hybrid Water Boiler & Warmer, 4.0-liter capacity, stainless steel exterior. The appliance boils drinking water and maintains the water at selected keep-warm temperatures. It has a removable metal inner lid with a plastic upper-lid structure underneath.
I have a Zojirushi VE Hybrid Water Boiler & Warmer, model CV-DCC40 (4.0 L), which my household has used regularly to boil and keep water hot for drinking. I began noticing white material in the water. I initially thought it was ordinary mineral scale.
On September 10, 2026, I removed the three screws securing the metal inner lid to investigate. Underneath the metal inner lid, I discovered that the plastic portion of the upper lid had severely deteriorated. The plastic was extremely brittle and crumbled into white powder and small pieces when touched. The appearance of this crumbled material was consistent with the white material I had been seeing in the water.
I was not previously aware that there was a plastic component behind the metal inner lid. During normal use, this plastic is concealed by the removable metal inner lid. The area is exposed to the hot-water/steam environment while the appliance boils water and keeps it hot.
My household had been drinking water from this appliance before we discovered the deteriorated plastic. We are not aware of any specific injury or illness caused by the product, but I am concerned about the possibility that deteriorated plastic material entered the drinking water. We immediately stopped using the appliance after discovering the deterioration. I have photographs and video documenting the condition of the lid and the crumbling material.
