  1. No one hurt

    Made Nov 7, 2018, sent to the company Mar 5, 2019, published by CPSC Mar 20, 2019

    The product, in the report: Mfg: Utilitech Distributor: American Water Heater Co. Product is Upper Hot Water Heater Thermostat, Utilltech Item No. 0362345 (Protective Cover - Missing) Product Is Lower Hot Water Heater Thermostat, Utilltech Item No. 0362351 (Protective Cover - Missing}

    I recently purchased two hot water heater replacement thermostats from my local Lowe’s store. These were universal replacements and can be used on many different hot water heaters. Step number eight of the Installation instructions states “Install new plastic terminal protector.• There is also this notation in the Instructions “WARNING: For safe operation of your water heater, the terminal cover provided must be Installed. Failure to do this could result in DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.” There were no terminal covers provided in either of the two packages containing the new thermostats. I returned to Lowe’s. They inspected the other thermostat packages on the shelf and none contained the terminal covers. I called Lowe’s costomer service who contacted the company that makes the thermostats, Utilitech, who said these covers were obsolete and no longer available. The thermostats carry Utilltech Item numbers 0362345 and 0362351. It should be noted that the plastic covers removed with the old thermostats would not fit the new replacements. I now have an unsafe situation with the thermostats installed but missing the safety covers and unable to obtain them.
