The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: 80 Gallon Hybrid American Water Heater

This is about 80 Gallon Hybrid American Water Heater Model number HPE10280H045DV. we had an almost boling water coming out of the water heater. As I investigated, I saw that the upper element was grounded. I immediately cut the power and applied it again to see what is going on. When power is applied, even before power button is pressed, the control board sends 240V to the upper element. If element is working fine, it cuts the 240V in a second or so. But if it is not working, like being grounded, it continues to send 240V. Remember that this happens even before power button is pressed.

So that 240V electricity finds its way from the element to the ground and heats the water, until the safety switch cuts the power.

I also checked if the relay to the upper element is stuck. So I changed the controller board first. It did the same thing. I changed the element, and everything went fine.

I believe this is a major safety issue.
