The product, in the report: Biddeford electric throw. Red and black plaid fleece material
I have been using an electric blanket. Last night just as I was going to bed, I took the blanket from where I was using it while I was sitting in a chair and carried it into the bedroom and spread it onto the bed. I then plugged it in and noticed that the light on the switch that indicates it is on was not lit as expected. I then noticed that the plastic housing of the switch was melted and deformed with a hole developed. I unplugged the cord and was thankful that I had noticed it. It surely was a high risk for a fire while I slept. The product is an electric blanket./ throw. The size is slightly smaller than a twin. The brand is Biddeford. I have owned it for approximately 4 years. Prior to last night, it appeared in excellent condition with no signs of wear. I was personally using the product. I am a 55 year old Physician. The product was being used daily for the last 3 months. It was used in bed as the topmost covering or under a comforter; also Covering my lap while sitting in a chair. Thankfully there were no injuries. I feel very lucky I saw the damage when I did.

The product, in the report: Plush Electric Blanket
Biddeford electric blank model TC13W1 controller got hot, smoked and became hotter as long as it was left on. Plastic case was becoming hotter without apparent bounds. Inspection shows very burned PCB at the site of the fabricated multi-contact switch on the contact. I assume that the contact resistance became bad enough to dissipate more heat than the FR4 could take. I have a BSEE degree. This is a dangerous design. We were lucky that the plastic case did not ignite.

The product, in the report: Biddeford Heating Blanket King Size
I purchased a brand new Biddeford heating blanket today 11/23/2022. I plugged the two units in, turned them on to verify the on and off functions as well as the different settings all worked properly. I turned the units OFF and noticed a smell of hot electrical smoke about 30 minutes later and found both units smoking and extremely hot. These units units would have certainly caused a fire if I was not close enough to smell the smoke.

The product, in the report: Biddeford Electric Blanket Microplush king size gray plush
I purchased a king sized electric blanket from Target last night, I put it on my bed, plugged in both sides, turned on both sides to confirm both sides warmed up. Turned off one side in about 2 minutes. Slept with the other side on, turned it off in the morning. About 2 hours later, happened to step into my room to take a phone call and heard a buzzing noise that instantly got louder, I walked around to investigate and the remote portion on the side that was only used for 2 minutes was buzzing/popping and the made a loud popping/explosion type sound, I immediately reached down to unplug it. The remote was extremely hot to the touch as I picked it up and i dropped it, the whole room smelled horrible, like melting plastic/rubber/chemicals. I briefly plugged it into another outlet and it was dead. But the outlet i had it plugged into was fine, I plugged other things into it subsequently and no issues with their operation.
I returned the item tonight to Target and they told me to notify the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: electric blanket
Biddeford Electric blanket caught on fire while my mother was in bed with it on. It burned the blanket, sheets, mattress pad, mattress and box spring. We reported this to the company the day after it happened. The Model # is0BF03 Tracking number: [REDACTED]. As requested I sent the blanket to the company in a label they provided, After I laid out the blanket, it was evident a wire from the plug in section of the blanket is where the fire took place, I could feel the wire from the burn exposed piece and followed it back to the plug inside the blanket. We are trying to negotiate with the company for monetary damages and I have asked them about a recall as well as requesting the blanket be preserved.

My daughter plugged in her “Auto Off Biddeford Blanket” and went to sleep last night. She woke up in the morning at her regular time and the blanket controller was melted. It had not shut off automatically and had burned up. Luckily it was on top of the blanket and not under and it did not start a fire...but it could’ve burned or killed her and my other daughter sleeping in the same room or caught our entire house on fire and all 6 of us who were sleeping.

The product, in the report: Biddeford Sherpa/velour electric throw- purchased at Target a few months ago
I am writing to report a melted handle on an electric blanket. I purchased the product a few months ago at Target. It is a Biddeford Electric velour/sherpa throw and I bought it on clearance. I was using it to help warm up my bed last week, and probably used it 10-15 times before this occurrence. I fell asleep with it on top of my bedspread so I don’t know for sure where the handle ended up. When I woke up in the morning, it was a bit scrunched up at the end of the bed and super hot. I couldn’t turn it off because the handle had melted and it wouldn’t allow me to push the off button. I am reporting this because it felt much hotter than it did before I went to bed. In addition, I have used electric blankets my entire life and I have never had a handle melt on me. I am very concerned that this could happen to other people and burn them or cause a fire. I will be provided the same copy of this email to Target and if I can locate the company, I will try that as well. Please let me know if you need additional information.

The product, in the report: Biddeford electric blanket with digital thermostat. Lot # 250615-CB
I purchased a digital electric blanket from JCPenny about a year or 2 ago. The electric blanket hasn’t worked properly since the day I got it. Sometimes when I would turn it on, it would immediately display the error code and sometimes it would work for a while and then error out. Since I just used it to preheat my bed in the wintertime, it wasn’t a big priority for me to pursue the warranty to have it repaired or replaced. As time has gone on, once the error code came on, I would turn off the blanket but sometimes the wires would continue to heat up making the bed too hot. I then took to unplugging the blanket if this happened. The other night I had turned on the blanket, it errored out so I turned it off. I was busy doing other things when I smelled something awful. I immediately unplugged the blanket and removed it from my bed. It smelled of burned plastic or wires or something. Yesterday I removed the backing from the digital thermostat to discover the circuit board has a burned spot on it. If I had not been in the room at the time this had happened, I fully believe that it would have started a fire, destroying my bedroom.

The product, in the report: Biddeford Electric Blanket, believe size twin. Model#OBF02, Lot#310715-9B, Tracking Number [REDACTED]. I had already given the burnt blanket to Kohl’s, but we got this informaton on the identical blanket that we bought for my other son at the same time (different color). Kohl’s has the damaged blanket.
My husband and I woke up at 3AM to a burning wire / plastic smell. After some investigation, the Biddeford electric blanket that I purchased for my 8 year old son was melting as he was sleeping. It burned holes in the blanket itself, sheets and charred his mattress pad and mattress. We bought 2 of these blankets from Kohl’s for Christmas, so they were only used for 5 months.
When we saw the blanket was overheated, the display showed “E”, which usually meant error (like it was disconnected from the blanket). When we touched his bed, it was burning up in a spot at the foot of his bed. When we pulled back his comforter, the blanket had melted onto itself a pile with exposed wires blackened by bits of the blanket.
We removed all electric blankets from all our beds, then I photographed the damage in the morning. I was shocked at the damage. My sons feet were inches from melted plastics and electrified wires. His mattress, mattress pad, sheet and comforter were damaged. The blanket got so overheated that the color from his sheets and comforter transferred to the blanket itself and appeared “bleached” in the spots that got overheated. We have always been careful monitoring their use of electric blankets, not leaving them on for too long, not keeping them on high, etc., but for a blanket less than 5 months old that originally retailed for $120, this is very scary.
I left a message for Biddeford this morning and returned the blankets to Kohl’s, talking to [REDACTED], the store manager. She helped me file an incident report with Kohl’s and I am expecting a return call from their corporate office by Tuesday. I am so thankful that our 2nd grader was not injured and hope that others have not experienced this or more critical injuries. This could have caused a bed fire, house fire or caused critical injury to our family. Very scary. We will never use an electric blanket again.

The product, in the report: Micro plush heated blanket. Twin sized. I had purchased two different colors for my kids. The packaging said it had a 10 hour auto shut off and 10 heat settings, was machine washable and had a 5 year warranty. We only were able to take them out of the packages and use once each.
I had purchased two of the twin sized electric blankets from Target store for my children. The first one stopped working the first night it was used, and we thought it was just defective. When we went to use the second one, it was plugged in to a household outlet and as soon as it was turned on, we smelled a burning smell. When we looked at the controller, it was smoking. We immediately unplugged the unit. Later, we smelled the other controller, and it also smells of burned wiring.

The product, in the report: Biddeford plush electric blanket, queen size, dual remotes, in denim color
I bought the Biddeford plush queen size electric blanket with two remotes in the denim color November 2013 from Kohls. A week ago I noticed a yellowish/greenish discolored area on the underside of the cover when I was changing the sheets on the bed, but thought maybe the covers underneath somehow discolored the electric blanket. Tonight I put something down on the bed and it was hot to the touch even though it was off but plugged in. I noticed two big green/brown patches on the cover on opposite ends as well as discoloration throughout the blanket that was all very hot. If I had not been home tonight I’m certain it would have started a fire.
This cover was very lightly used. There is no reason why it would do this. I will call the company but based off of what others said I’m doubtful much will be done.

We began using a king size Biddeford heated mattress pad in the Fall of 2012. The pad worked well for a few months, but then one side began to heat only intermittently. When we removed the pad, we discovered that the cord connecting the power/controller to the pad had a short in it roughly 1” from the mattress pad connector. The short had melted the plastic around the cord and burned a half inch hole in the mattress pad. This short developed without the product having been adjusted or manipulated in any since the initially installation.

The product, in the report: Dual Controlled Electric Blanket made by Biddeford
We purchased an electric blanket dual control in September 2012, after only having the blanket on the bed a few weeks, we had a fire on November 8th 2012 and lost everything. I had never turned on my blanket but my husband had the night before. My side was not plugged in but all the damage came from my side. The outlet was burnt up on my side but nothing to my husband side. The fire burnt most of his side of the bed. IFIC stated that the H wire showed a small arc damage to three strands in the H wire. This was shown on my side of the bed which stated twice that my side was not plugged in. If my side was not plugged in how could this have started a fire?

The product, in the report: Biddeford Plush Full Size Electric Blanket
Bought Biddeford Plush Full Size electric blanket for a friend as Christmas gift on 12/19/2012. Friend called that on 5/4/2013 the blanket switch had melted from the heat and that it appeared that the blanket stayed overly hot most of the time rather than shutting off or cooling down. This is a fire and safety hazard that needs to be addressed.

The product, in the report: Electic Controller to a Biddeford Electric Blanket Lot # 380910
On 09/26/2012 I was sleeping and my wife was reading in bed with our King sized electric blanket on. The Blanket was produced by Biddeford Blankets. My wife heard a buzzing noise and smelled smoke at which point and time she noticed that the electric controller for her half of the electric blanket was burning. Fire was contained within plastic shell but visible arcing, flame, and smoke were seen. She woke me up (firefighter by trade). I was able to unplug and extinguish the controller without any further damage (doused it in a sink.) The blanket (itself) did not appear to burn just the control unit. Due to the fact that the fire did not extend beyond the object of origin, the fire department was not called. Therefore, I am hoping that this organization can monitor whether this is a freak or common occurence with this device. The controller is off white with the number 1-H on a single dial. It has Biddeford Auto Off on the face. The lot # was 380910. There was no visible serial #.

The product, in the report: Controller for Electric Blanket
Caller’s ordered twin size electric blanket online that was delivered on 10/25/2011. They plugged blanket in to test, were more than satisfied that it heated up w/no problem then turned it off. That evening when they were preparing to retire for the night caller’s husband turned blanket back on to allow it to warm up, however this time the controller to the blanket popped, began smoking and flame up. Flame was just a quick burst, husband turned off immediately.
Caller’s are reporting for public to be made aware and would like controller replaced by manufacturer & at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: Electric blanket in the full size
While using the blanket on the setting four the consumer’s husband attempted to pull the blanket back to hop in bed when he noticed flames coming from the wires that connect to the blanket. The unit was then unplugged from the wall outlet.
He immediately unplugged the plug from the wall outlet and the flames went out. A couple hours later when the consumer went to make the bed she noticed that the blanket was still warm to the touch but it was not powered in the on position and not plugged into the wall outlet.
While doing some research online she noticed a recall (see Release #02-003) but noticed that there different model/serial number affected by the recall.
She has not contacted the firm but plan to do so. She contacted the retailer on 10/11/2011 and they offered to allow the consumer to return the blanket. She has not made any further decisions

The product, in the report: Electric Blanket with two (2) controls.
Bought an Electric Blanket in Target, after just a short time, while in use, I noticed a foul odor coming out of one of the controls: the smell was just like that emanating from an electric short circuit. Disconnected this control and connected the other one, the same thing happened: the same odor came out and immydiatelly disconnected the blanket as considered there was a high risk of having the blanket catch fire or an electric shock. On July 29th I contacted the manufacturer reporting this incident and so far, have not received any reply whatsoever. Consider this incident to be of great significance and steps should be taken to safegurd consumers. I have the blanket with me and have not tried to return it to the store where I bought as this would not be appropiate solution. FYG this is the email sent to manufacturer: “Gentlemen: I bought one of your blankets at my local Target (item 062030136) store. After just a few days of use, felt a smoke odor coming from one of the controls, switched it off and after a few minutes the same type of burt odor came from the other control. The odor can be described as that generated by an electric short circuit. Needless to say, I stopped using the blanket as soon as became aware of the fire or electic shock hazard. For your guidance the control reads: “ TC11BA - 76 PA - 120 V AC - US PAT # 5.861.610 180 WATTS - E 224829 BIDDEFORD BLANKETS LOT NO. 400910 “ Due to the above incident, at this time I am looking for a full refund. Before contacting Target or any consumer agency, wanted to make you aware of this defective product and hope you will take the corrective actions required for the safety of final consumers. Your comments will be appreciated. Truly yours, [REDACTED] I wish to thank CPSC in advance for any action on this matter.
