The product, in the report: The product is an El Presidente 20SH J23 consumer aerial fireworks cake manufactured for consumer use. It was purchased from TNT Fireworks stand #ZM4K in Bonaire, GA. The firework was contained in a multi-shot cardboard cake-style tube with multiple internal launch tubes designed to remain stationary on the ground while firing aerial effects upward. The exterior packaging identified the product as El Presidente 20SH J23. The device was new, unused, and in its original packaging before being set up and used according to the manufacturers instructions. It was an orange box with floral designs and a skeleton face on sides of the box. The barcode # is 27736 04920.
We were using consumer fireworks according to the manufacturers instructions and while maintaining a safe distance. The firework involved was an El Presidente 20SH J23 purchased from a TNT Fireworks stand (#ZM4K). After it was lit, the device remained upright, but instead of all shots launching upward as intended, three shots discharged out of the side and/or bottom of the firework. These sideways explosions sent burning debris toward the nearby spectators. The remaining shots then launched normally into the air. Because the product appeared to malfunction and created an unexpected hazard despite being used properly, I am reporting this incident to help protect other consumers. I also have a video of the malfunction.
Yes. Multiple bystanders sustained burns to both legs and experienced an impact to the ears from the unexpected sideways explosions. Although we did not seek immediate medical treatment, the injuries were significant enough to cause pain and concern, particularly regarding possible hearing effects. The injuries occurred because three shots unexpectedly discharged from the side and/or bottom of the firework instead of launching vertically into the air.
