The product, in the report: GSI Gas Campstove Cartridge -- Isobutane 230 Gram: Serial 20260226H 13:38
Exploding GSI 230 gram isobutane fuel cartridge
Reporting a dangerous incident with a GSI manufactured camping gas cartridge (isobutane 230 gram) to try to resolve this incident. The canister exploded in my pack, inside my tent -- destroying both. Luckily I was on a day hike, or else I or my friends I was camping with could have sustained significant injuries .
I am back from Colorado and my CDT backpacking trip and am hoping to figure out what happened on this exploding canister (Serial 20260226H 13:38). I returned from a dayhike to discover my tent and pack shredded (it likely occurred around noon or 1 pm) on August 4-- I was camped at walk-in campsite [REDACTED] at [REDACTED] State Park. Elevation was about 8000 feet and the temperature that day was mid 80’s. The canister was in my pack, inside the tent ([REDACTED]) which I had collapsed but was still staked down as I was using my trekking poles (which double as tent poles) to take a day hike at nearby [REDACTED] peak. We returned (I was hiking and camping with two friends from SLC who were with me and can attest to all this) to find this debacle and near disaster (had anyone been nearby) around 4 pm. We found the top of the canister 48 yards away (48 of my paces) from the tent and backpack.
I bought the canister from REI in Salt Lake City (on August 2) and the next day after the incident we went to a different REI (in Dillon) and explained what happened and warned them about the canister...and returned the remaining canister. REI would not immediately offer any discount on the new pack but that evening gave me half off and provided a 100 gift certificate so I feel they are aware of there at least being a problem here thought I do not know if they are removing other cartridges of this make from their shelves.
GSI assured me that they were making management aware of the problem (they said this on August 12) but have yet to get back to me.
Please let me know what additional information or materials I can provide to help you investigate this product.
Thx,
[REDACTED]
