Hurt, no treatment Made Jul 23, 2013, sent to the company Jul 31, 2013, published by CPSC Aug 21, 2013
The product, in the report: Promate Junior snorkel scuba diving mask. I bought it through Amazon via this listing in November 2012: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004RR8KAO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 UPDATE 7/25/13: perhaps “SCS0032” is the model number
My 3.5 yr old son was playing with his snorkel mask. It is the exact one shown in this listing as I purchased it from this listing in November 2012.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004RR8KAO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
He tried to throw the mask out of the pool and it hit the edge of the pool. The lens shattered glass everywhere - inside the pool water and on the concrete around the pool. I removed the kids from the pool at the opposite end and then proceeded to vacuum up the glass in and out of the water. No one was really injured. My daughter just got a tiny cut on her finger from trying to pick up a piece of glass and I got a tiny cut on my finger from the same. I also stepped on a piece of glass resulting in a tiny cut on my foot. All cuts only resulted in only 1 drop of blood - they were inconsequential. But my concern is with the glass in this mask that is marketed for children. Kids drop/throw things often. Also, kids trip and fall often. If my son had tripped and fallen while wearing this mask, I’m concerned that the glass could have shattered on his face/in his eyes while he was wearing it. That would have been very dangerous. I really think that this type of mask for children should be made with some sort of plastic lens, rather than glass. I attempted to contact the Promate company by email through their website but have not heard back from them.
