The product, in the report: gas dryer

(10/23/16) The consumer put a small load of towels in the dryer and pushed the “Start” button. A few seconds later the consumer states that she heard loud arcing noise and when she turned to look at the dryer she saw smoke. The consumer’s husband unplugged the dryer and she indicated that the dryer stopped arcing immediately after. The consumer’s husband also turned off the gas. The consumer states that the dryer was hot to the touch. The consumer states that that the dryer cooled down and stopped smoking after approximately 10 minutes. The consumer then opened the dryer and she noticed burn damages inside the dryer. The consumer believes there were flames inside the dryer that caused the burn damages but since the dryer was hot to the touch while it was smoking she did not open the dryer.

(10/24/16) The consumer contacted the firm to inform them of the incident and they arranged for a technician to inspect the dryer.

(10/27/16) The consumer states that the firm sent a technician with [REDACTED] to examine the dryer. The technician advised the consumer that the incident was not the consumer’s fault or due to lint but it was caused by the heater relay. The technician contacted the firm to advise them of his findings.

The consumer states that the firm called her shortly after and left a voicemail offering her 35% off any Whirlpool dryer. The consumer called the firm back and advised them that she was not satisfied with their offer. The consumer was then offered 50% off any Whirlpool dryer or 50% of what the consumer paid and she would need to provide a receipt, which she has. The consumer was told that she would have 30 days to accept the offer (Case # [REDACTED]). The consumer also asked to have the matter escalated to a manager because she believe the firm should provide a replacement since the incident was due to a manufacture defect.

The consumer indicated that there are no prior incidents and she uses the dryer twice a week.

The product, in the report: ventless dryer with heat pump

About 2-3 months ago the consumer’s wife noticed that the dryer was taking hours to dry clothes. In August 2016 the dryer stopped working and the consumer contacted a third party technician to repair the dryer. The consumer states that some electronic parts were replaced.

The consumer states that the dryer began working but shortly after the consumer’s wife noticed that the dryer was still taking 2 hours to dry their kids work out clothes. The consumer contacted the third party technician again and he inspected the dryer about 2 weeks ago. The technician advised the consumer that the dryer had a lot of lint build up near the compressor and engine. The consumer was advised that this presents a fire hazard. The technician contacted Whirlpool to inquire about repair methods and the technician was told that this was a design and could not be repaired.

The consumer contacted Whirlpool to inquire about this safety hazard and the consumer states the Rep. (name unknown) advised him that the dryer was out warranty. The consumer was also informed that page 11 in the manual states that the dryer should be cleaned every 2 years. However, the consumer believes the design poses a fire hazard and the dryer has been having this problem shortly after purchase.

The consumer states that the technician cleaned the dryer but he is worried about using the dryer.

Sometime in August 2015 a technician inspected the dryer because the dryer was taking very long to dry clothes. The consumer was advised that the settings were changed to dry at a higher temperature.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Electric Dryer

I purchased a Whirlpool electric dryer several years ago. Recently, the door switch stopped working. I ordered the part and had an electrician out to replace it. When he went to install the part he discovered that the switch had caught fire. He said he would not repair the machine as he said this never should have happened and obviously the safety device did not work. I have pictures I will send you if I am provided an email. I was told we were very lucky the entire dryer did not catch on fire since the switch and surrounding area totally burned.

The clothes in our clothes dryer ignited. The fire occurred in the clothes drum. The limited lint in the vent pipe did not catch on fire. If I did not have a fire extinquisher, it could have caused a house fire.

Purchased from Lowes Home Centers, Inc. 9490 W. Broad St. Richmond, VA 23294

    Purchase Date: 12/12/11 Delivered: 12/29/11, 2:30 p.m. to 11301 Markham Ct., Richmond, VA 23233

Summary: On 12/30/11 [redacted] was preparing to wash clothes in her new Whirlpool washing machine. She poured bleach into a glass measuring cup. She then placed the glass measuring cup on the dryer while putting the top on the bleach bottle and placing the bleach bottle in the overhead cabinet. Because of the curved downward slope of the top of the dryer sloping from back to front, the measuring cup containing bleach slid to the front of the dryer and fell to the floor, splashing bleach onto the floor, the rug in the laundry room, clothes hanging several feet away in the laundry room, and onto [redacted]—specifically onto her legs, arms, hands and body. She sustained bleach burns and swelling to her hands, arms and legs. Property damaged included her shirt and pants, the rug in the laundry room, and clothes hanging in the laundry room.

Defect/Hazard in dryer and washing machine design: Forward downward slope of the tops causes objects placed on the tops to slide down and fall to the floor. No warnings on any materials or on the washer or dryer warned against putting objects on the top of the dryer or washing machine. No rim or other design feature prevents objects such as containers of liquids, clothes baskets, detergent boxes or containers from sliding forward down the sloping top and falling to the floor. The risk is exacerbated by any moisture present on the top of the dryer/washer or on the bottoms of containers placed on the top of the dryer/washer.

Comment: It is pure luck that the splash from the bleach did not enter [redacted] eyes. It is only a matter of time, however, before serious bodily injury results from caustic substances or objects slipping down and falling from the sloping tops of the Whirlpool Cabrio washer and dryer.
