The product, in the report: In September/October of 2003, I purchased a Whirlpool Electric Duet Dryer model# GEW9200LL1, SN# MP3406748 for about $800 from Spencer’s TV and Appliance @ 115 W 1st Ave, Mesa, AZ, (480) 833-3072. URL: http://www.spencerstv.com/
Whirlpool dryer consumers beware of possible fire hazards!
In 2003, I purchased a Whirlpool Electric Duet Dryer model# GEW9200LL1, SN# MP3406748 for about $800 from Spencer’s TV and Appliance in Mesa, AZ. On December 27, 2013, while turned off, this dryer caught the clothes inside it on fire. The smoke from the fire within the dryer was intoxicating and it forced us to vacate the house immediately. Within 20-25 minutes flames were coming out of our roof over the laundry room and the fire rapidly engulfed other areas of the house.
The fire department was unable to extinguish the fire before it destroyed our house and possessions. The house is a complete loss; it will need to be demolished and completely rebuilt. Thankfully my husband and I were home at the time the fire started and none of our family members or animals were harmed. None-the-less, we are devastated by this tragedy as we did not have insurance on our house. We have been displaced in a small apartment in another city and have had to begin our lives anew with only the clothes on our backs.
The fire department has confirmed that the Whirlpool dryer did in fact cause the fire. I will never purchase any other products from Whirlpool. We are currently looking in legal counsel on this issue. I have attached a link to a YouTube video that shows part of the fire and its devastation to our house:

No one hurt Made Apr 19, 2011, published by CPSC Jun 10, 2011
The product, in the report: Dryer
Thursday, April 14th, 2011; Caller had put a load of clothes into the dryer, set at 20 minutes. She returned before the 20 minutes was over to remove her clothing from the dryer and turn dryer off, however, the dryer would not turn off. She pushed again for the dryer to turn off but it still would not turn off. Caller unplugged the dryer & called Service Tech who came out Monday, April 18th, 2011. Service Tech informed caller that the relay switch had defaulted and or the control plus heating element may have all gone bad, overheated but he couldn’t be sure which one triggered the others or which one was the faulty component that burned and not allowed the dryer to turn off or shut down and that the internal/inside was entirely burned because it kept burning after being unplugged. Caller was completely unaware that the dryer was burning although she was in and out of the laundry room all day because it is also her utility room. She said that there was no odor, no flame, and no smoke but that the inside of the dryer has the appearance of coal. If caller had not unplugged the dryer, it is believed that there may have been a fire large enough to possibly burn her house. At the time of the dryer incident her 13yr old son was in wheel chair with a broken femur & it would have been difficult for him to get out especially when his mother ran to pick his siblings up from school. She would like this model investigated and possibly recalled. She would also like to be reimbursed for repair if repair is possible or to have the dryer replaced at manufacturer expense, preferably the latter.
