The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Jun 24, 2012, sent to the company Jul 2, 2012, published by CPSC Jul 24, 2012

The product, in the report: Water Distiller Water Wise 4000 features: Advanced Design Countertop Appliance Automatic Shut Off Manual Fill - No water hookups Gaseous Vent & Post Carbon Treatment System Stainless Steel Condenser - Not Aluminum Stainless Steel Boiler - 1 Gallon Capacity Easy to Use & Clean External Heating Element for long Life GE Lexan Polycarbonate Bottle Detachable 48” Power Cord Water Wise 4000 specifications: Compact Dimensions: Height - 15” (38.1 cm) Diameter - 9” (22.8 cm) Portable & Lightweight Weight 8.4 lbs (3.8 kgs) CE Certified (Euro) CSA Certified (USA & Canada) USA & Foreign Patents Pending 1 Year Limited Warranty 120VAC/60Hz 800W · Distillate Capacity - 1 Gallon (3.8L) in 4 Hours Up to 6 Gallons (22.8L) in 24 Hours

Plugged our Waterwise 4000 Countertop water distiller into the outlet. It heated for about 20 minutes then stopped heating, and no water was dripping from the condenser coils. Emptied the remaining water from the distiller, turned it upside down, removed the plastic base (found a crack in the base that we had not noticed before), and noted that the heating element wires had detached from the metal clip attached to the distiller, and burned/melted a hole in the distiller. We usually use this distiller at night, but we were fortunate that we used it during the day this time. We will not use the distiller again in its present condition as it is a fire risk.

[UPDATE] We reattached the heating element wires ourselves on the distiller after the first time it detached and melted/burned the plastic base. Since it was no longer under warranty, and we believed that Waterwise would not have repaired, in our honest opinion we thought there was no harm in fixing it ourselves. The distiller worked for another 2 weeks, then once again stopped working. We again noticed melted plastic and burn marks, so stopped using it completely and contacted Waterwise.
