Made Apr 13, 2017, sent to the company Apr 21, 2017, published by CPSC May 5, 2017

The product, in the report: The company is RainSoft. These are the products. EC4 Series Water Treatment System http://www.rainsoft.com/products/water-conditioning-systems/ec4-water-conditioner.cfm Also, the UltreFiner II sink filter. http://www.rainsoft.com/ultrefiner-ii/

This started one day at Home Depot when I was stopped by an employee and asked to do a survey about my water. I agreed to the survey. I was called a few days later by Home Depot stating that I won a gift card and a free water test for doing the survey. I agreed to the free water test. The salesman from the company RainSoft came to our home and did the water test. He told us that their water treatment system could clear up eczema and this was a main reason why we ended up purchasing their system. Initially, I was excited about the product but after about a week of having it installed, I started to notice some physical symptoms such as muscle cramps and weakness which led me to start researching how the RainSoft system works. It is removing calcium and magnesium from the water and replacing it with sodium and then further filtering the water at the filter in the kitchen sink. The water is being demineralized by the RainSoft system. I came across this article from the World Health Organization which outlines the health risks from drinking demineralized water: http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/dwq/nutrientschap12.pdf

From the article: “The possible adverse consequences of low mineral content water consumption are discussed in the following categories: • Direct effects on the intestinal mucous membrane, metabolism and mineral homeostasis or other body functions. • Little or no intake of calcium and magnesium from low-mineral water. • Low intake of other essential elements and microelements. • Loss of calcium, magnesium and other essential elements in prepared food. • Possible increased dietary intake of toxic metals.”

I asked my doctor to write a letter for RainSoft to explain this to them and she has provided the letter. I have given the letter to RainSoft and have asked them to return the product, as I am not going to take these health risks by having the product in our home. RainSoft has refused to return the product and threatened to place a lien on our house if we do not pay them an 18% return fee. [REDACTED] from RainSoft told me “I am going to cease these emails” in his last email to me.

I want to return this product to RainSoft at no additional cost and expose the potential health risks of their product as well as the practices of this company to the public.
