No incident, no one hurt Made Mar 9, 2024, sent to the company Mar 25, 2024, published by CPSC Apr 8, 2024
The product, in the report: Ravin R500 crossbow
I purchased a Ravin R500 crossbow in the fall of 2023, following fewer than 20 shots to sight in, first hunt in an elevated tree stand I heard a sizzling type of sound, looked at loaded crossbow and noticed that the limbs were beginning to delaminate. After several unanswered calls to Ravin, I took the crossbow to [REDACTED] a known repair center, [REDACTED] in Avon ohio refused to work on the bow and referred me back to Ravin for repair. After several weeks, finally was contacted by Ravin and crossbow was returned to Ravin for limb, cable and string replacement. I’ve read on several forums that people were injured while using the R500 model. I reached out to Ravin regarding replacement for a different model and was told that they are waiting on CPSC to direct them on how to handle R500. I have over $3800 invested in a crossbow that I am not comfortable using for fear of being injured.

Hurt, care not known Made Feb 9, 2023, sent to the company Mar 13, 2023, published by CPSC Mar 27, 2023
The product, in the report: Archer bow
Taken from PDF file to the info center:
I bought a Ravin R26 on 12/18/19 and have nothing but problems every season since I had it. Soon after I purchased it, I had it in my hunting room and it exploded uncocked out of nowhere and damaged a gun cabinet that I have. Ravin advised me to bring it to [REDACTED] in Eynon, where they fixed it for 50$, I unfortunately do not have that receipt. Next season I had another mechanical catastrophic failure happen, nothing to do with human error. I had to go to the hospital to make sure my hand was good; I could have easily gotten permanent damage, luckily there wasn’t. At the time I was advised to send it back directly to Ravin, they supposedly “fixed” it and sent it back. Just recently, season 3 now, my bow exploded again out of nowhere, damaging a great deal of the bow itself. I took it back to [REDACTED] where they said there Ravin rep wanted to send it back again for repair. I asked [REDACTED] to have his rep contact me, which he never did. I emailed Ravin and [REDACTED] multiple times recently and no one has responded once. [REDACTED] was the Ravin employee that I worked with when it almost took my hand off (2nd). At that time, I even asked for a refund or a different bow but instead was just pushed off, [REDACTED] made the process sound like it would be a huge hassle if I wanted a refund and assured me the bow would be fine now. I paid $2500 for this bow, but it still cost me $222 this time to get it back from [REDACTED] after it was fixed. I shouldn’t have to pay top dollar for a new model bow and every year it breaks or hurts me, then pay a few hundred just to get it back, that’s terrible! I even mentioned I was going to the [REDACTED] if no one got back to me, obviously they don’t care about their customers, customers safety, or the equipment they are deeming safe and putting out there for us to spend thousands on.

No one hurt Made Sep 24, 2022, sent to the company Oct 11, 2022, published by CPSC Oct 25, 2022
The product, in the report: Ravin R10 Crossbow Package, Predator Camo
While de-cocking my Ravin R10 Crossbow, the scope interfered with the de-cocking handle which caused me to lose grip on the handle. The handle was then released with enough force to destroy a turret on the scope, sending it flying across the yard. I’m lucky it didn’t strike my hand or arm.

Emergency room Made Nov 12, 2019, sent to the company Nov 20, 2019, published by CPSC Dec 5, 2019
The product, in the report: Ravin R9 crossbow
I was going to target shoot with our Ravin R9 crossbow. I was holding the crossbow in my left hand at roughly a 45-degree angle. Using my right hand, I loaded a Ravin arrow with an orange nock, per Ravin Instruction. As I was in the process of bringing my right hand back and raising the crossbow to sight and fire at the target, the crossbow discharged with the safety still engaged, severely injuring and permanently damaging my right index finger which was sliced and fractured by the bowstring. During this time my left hand was on the forend of the crossbow which is remote from the trigger and at no time did my right hand or finger pull or touch the trigger.

First aid Made Dec 15, 2017, sent to the company Mar 16, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 2, 2018
The product, in the report: Ravin R9 crossbow with Ravin crossbow bolts.
I was hunting with the Ravin R9 crossbow for 3 weeks in November and frequently noticed the nock was not fully engaging with the string. This was my first year to crossbow hunt, as I used a compound bow for 25 years, so I kept thinking I was doing something wrong. I told my husband it kept happening, but he also thought it was user error. One evening after hunting I was going to discharge my arrow into a target to unload it and the bow did not go off. I put the bow on safety and when I attempted to re-nock the arrow the bow went off and the string snapped my left hand. My middle finger, pointer and thumb were struck and immediately turned swollen and blue. I developed a black string blister on all 3 fingers. I was unable to use my hand for at about 10 days. I still have a scar and calloused mark especially on my middle finger that hasn’t healed completely.
I am reporting this incident now because up until I heard about this recall, I thought I did something in error that caused my injuries. Now I know this was due to faulty nocks.

First aid Made Dec 12, 2017, sent to the company Mar 16, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 2, 2018
The product, in the report: Crossbow for target shooting and hunting.
Item: Ravin R9 Crossbow, serial #: 13140 purchased on 03/23/2017 from Pape’s Inc. Louisville, KY.
During a target shooting and sighting-in session in my backyard... After cranking the crossbow, then loading an arrow, I placed the crossbow on top of my shooting table and prepared to shoot at my target. While pointing at the target (fortunately), With my left hand, I moved the Safety to FIRE position. The crossbow fired instantly. My trigger finger was NOT on the trigger. My right had was completely on the stock grip. I was in such shock, I could not believe what just happened.
I immediately called the manufacturer Ravin, and informed them and requested they replace the trigger mechanism because I had no faith in it. I returned the crossbow to them, and they actually sent me a new crossbow. I did have a previous issue before this incident whereby the bow did NOT fire with the Safety on Fire position.
The manufacturer informed me that this type of incident can happen when the arrow is not completely pushed-in until you hear a loud click sound. Apparently, when the arrow nock is not completely inserted into the trigger assembly, it causes the trigger mechanism to not engage fully. This is why they are recalling the White nocks installed on their arrows and replacing them with a slightly shorter and tighter-on-the-string nock. This was my first Ravin R9 Crossbow.
After receiving my replacement crossbow Serial #: 50114, I spent several days sighting it in and shooting it at my targets. No incidents, bow working as expected. One day while target shooting, a friend stopped by to say hi, and since I did not want to shoot while he was next to me (I like to have full concentration), I decided to UNCOCK the bow. Now, this is something no other crossbow can do. Normally with other crossbows, once they are loaded or crancked up, one must fire an arrow into a target or ground with a special “discharge” arrow in order to unload or discharge the crossbow.
So I proceeded to uncock the bow, and as I was doing that, the handle slipped out of my right hand and unwound so fast and violently that it hit the tips of 3 of my finger, cracking one (my finger tips were black n blue for over one week) and scared the “daylights” out of me and caused lots of pain. In addition to hitting my fingers, the handle hit the scope and broke the right turret knob, and made 2 gashes on the stock.
The reason this happened is because the crancking handle had a very small straight handle grip that basically you hold with 2 fingers, and this is NOT secure enough to hold back the weight force uncocking the bow.
Again, I contacted Ravin - the manufacturer, and again they agreed to replace the crossbow. I suggested to them that they improve the grip on the handle.
To my pleasant surprise, the crancking handle grip on the replacement crossbow (Serial #: 50114), was now round and offered a much firmer grip than the original design. I suspect Ravin has has this same issue (handle slipping out of hand) quite a few times, which lead them to change the design.
