Emergency room Made Feb 17, 2016, sent to the company Feb 25, 2016, published by CPSC Mar 10, 2016
The product, in the report: Barnett Jackal Crossbow, used for hunting deer. Serial # 355810
I am 50 years old and have been hunting my entire life. On 11/19/2012, I purchased a Barnett Jackal crossbow at Academy Sports. On 10/16/2015 I returned home from a hunting trip and was in the process of dislodging the arrow into the ground; unknowingly I had my right thumb above the fore end (flight track). The string nearly severed my thumb and broke the bone in several small pieces at the knuckle.
I had to have surgery to re-attach my finger at the knuckle. A pin was put into place to align my finger. I also had to wear a prothesis to prevent further injury during my recovery period. I missed 8 weeks of work due to my injury, and my medical bills totalled $23,000.00.
I consider myself to be more safety conscious than most. Up until 10/16/2015, I have dislodged my arrows numerous times in the past successfully. I was fully aware of the injury potential if my fingers were above the flight track when an arrow was dislodged. With that being said, as much as I hunt, dislodging my arrow became routine, whether it was from shooting at a deer, dislodging the arrow into the ground while practicing target shooting or from an unsuccessful hunt.
The bottom line is this; if Barnett had installed finger guards on the Jackal crossbow, it is 100% certain my injury, nor the injury of many others, would have ever occurred, period. Barnett left open room for error when they designed the Jackal with no finger guards in place. I have been told the Jackal Crossbow is NOW being manufactured with finger guards. The “fix” came a little too late for me.

Hospital admission Made Oct 14, 2015, sent to the company Oct 22, 2015, published by CPSC Nov 5, 2015
The product, in the report: Barnett Jackal Crossbow
I was using a Barnett Jackal crossbow when I was injured. I was sighting the bow for the season. I inadvertently allowed my left thumb to be placed in the path of the crossbow cable. When I shot the arrow, the cable struck my thumb resulting in near amputation of my thumb. The Jackal crossbow lacks a finger guard which would prevent this type of injury. The product is defectively designed and needs to be redesigned or removed from the market place. I also believe the existing crossbows that have been sold should be recalled due to their hazard to users.
