Emergency room Made Feb 6, 2016, sent to the company Feb 16, 2016, published by CPSC Mar 1, 2016
The product, in the report: Barnett crossbow.Ghost 400 model. black in color
was shooting Barnett Ghost 400 crossbow and string hit my left thumb. Thumb was severely injured. Cut almost completely off. Very small amount of skin and tissue holding thumb on. Was told at the emergency room that they could not repair it. Was given the option to fold skin over it and call it an amputation. I opted to be taken to a larger hospital system where they found a hand surgeon who said he would attempt to save it. After two surgeries, steel pins etc. they were able to save my thumb. Since then it has been almost five months of terrible pain and and life changes that no one else should have to go through. I had to sell my construction company of thirty years because I could no longer do that type of work. Also I can not work outside and expose my thumb to the cold. This could all have been prevented with just a simple safety guard on the forearm of the crossbow preventing anyone from letting their fingers or thumbs from getting into the travel path of the string. Some manufacturers have these guards and some do not. It needs to be a requirement on all crossbows before more people have this same accident. Especially before it happens to a child.
