No one hurt Made Oct 18, 2025, sent to the company Nov 7, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 26, 2025
The product, in the report: It is a model HYPER XP405 Crossbow manufactured by Barnett Crossbows that is patterned in Veil Camo. The product description is as follows: “The Hyper XP 405 is built around the small diameter HyperFlite arrow. Barnett is the first crossbow company to improve the ammo in our category by introducing narrow diameter arrow technology into the crossbow platform. HyperFlite narrow diameter arrows provide numerous advantages. Deeper penetration, less wind drift, increased durability and delivery of maximum kinetic energy. Available in OD green and Veil Camo Flawlessly transfer the skills you have developed shooting rifles into archery with the new Hyper XP 405.” Regarding this product report specifically, there is this feature as well: “The Frictionless Release Technology creates a free-floating roller between the sear and the trigger offering a smoother, lighter trigger unlike anything else on the market. Nock sensors and anti-dry fire give you peace of mind for double the safety, and a three-pound, zero-creep release gives you confidence to make the shot. Once you go TriggerTech, youll never go back. TriggerTech 3lb Zero-Creep Frictionless Release Technology $200 value” Dimensions: 32” x 14” x 7” Length: 32” Height: 7” Axle to Axle: 10” Product Weight: 13 lbs Draw Weight: 213 lbs Kinetic Energy: 138 lbs Power Stroke: 13.4” Speed: 405 FPS Trigger Type: TriggerTech This is the link to the website listing where this was purchased from: https://barnettcrossbows.com/collections/hyper-series-crossbows/products/hyper-xp405%E2%84%A2-od-green?variant=49984018972992
The product is a Barnett HYPER XP405 Crossbow sold from Barnett’s website. While out hunting with said crossbow, I was sitting in a chair in my stand with it cocked and the safety on. I did not have my hand on the trigger, the trigger guard, or any mechanism that should fire the crossbow’s arrow. The safety remained on and was not being tampered with. The crossbow abruptly let loose the arrow in an unsafe manner as it fired via an uncommanded discharge. Had I not been safely resting it on the rail of the stand, with my hand away from the limbs, string, or rail, I might have been injured or maimed (crossbow strings can remove fingers). Had the crossbow not been safely pointed towards a tree nearby, it might have injured or killed myself or someone else.
Following the incident, I investigated the crossbow after insuring it was unloaded, the string was safely to the front and not cocked, and no arrow was loaded. The trigger mechanism had failed, and the crossbow was no longer able to be cocked.
I know previously Barnett has had recalls related to other crossbow models involving triggers or nocking mechanisms failing to properly seat. This crossbow was safely cocked using Barnett’s cranking-device, properly loaded with their hyperflite arrows, and the safety was engaged during the cocking of the crossbow.

No one hurt Made Jan 15, 2021, sent to the company Feb 3, 2021, published by CPSC Feb 18, 2021
The product, in the report: Barnett quad 400 crossbow [REDACTED]
The crossbow was resting on a hanger stand. The crossbow was cooked with an arrow and on safety. The crossbow suddenly discharged the arrow and the broadhead buried itself into the overhead 2x6 rafter. The company already has recalls on other products for the exact same issue and this needs to be included before someone is seriously injured. I was lucky. This is a Barnett Quad 400 crossbow. I was lucky that I wasn’t holding it or that it wasn’t inadvertently pointed in a direction that might have been fatal for someone. The product was used for target practice. I had loaded it then needed to take a break. I hung it on its stand by the front handle. The crossbow suddenly fired the arrow.

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Sep 27, 2020, sent to the company Oct 26, 2020, published by CPSC Nov 10, 2020
The product, in the report: Barnett DRT 385 Crossbow with built in crank cocking device. The crossbow has a draw weight of 185 lbs and shoots at 385 fps. Model DRT 385
On 9-22-2020 I purchased a Barnett DRT 385 crossbow from Dunham Sporting Goods. I put it together per the instructions. The Crank Cocking Device was already installed on the crossbow. On 9-23-2020 I went to cock the crossbow using the crank cocking device. I cranks the bow back to about 3/4 cocked, when the crank cocking device string broke. This allowed the two hard plastic hooks that pull the bow string back to fly forward and into the top of my foot. The two hooks caused puncture wounds to the top of my foot. X-rays revealed no broken bones. I have severe soft tissue damage the size of a baseball to the top of my foot. Dr [REDACTED], Ankle and Foot Specialist has me wearing a compression sock to reduce the chance of a blood clog. I have to wear a Support Boot and keep my foot elevated as much as possible. There are several complaints on the internet of the crank cocking device string breaking while cocking. One person reported that the hooks missed his foot, but hit and ground and then ricocheted up striking him in the forehead The string might not break until the 3rd or 4th time cranking, but it will break. I tried calling Barnett Crossbows. No answer at Customer Service. I stayed on hold for over an hour waiting, while I played a video game. I tried emailing them. No replies to my five (5) emails. Again on9-25-2020 I called and waited on hold for over an hour. Still no answer. Why are they in hiding? What other defective products do they have out in the market place?

The product, in the report: Crossbow made by Barnett - Jackel model
For two years in a row and after having my Barnett Crossbow repaired I suffered from a misfire which lead to having a laceration and a hematoma on the left side of my face. A plastic/teflon piece which is on the crossbow to keep the string from rubbing together broke off the crossbow and hit my face causing the injury. I have attempted to contact the Barnett company by email and by telephone with the response from them.

The product, in the report: Barnett GameStrike Crossbow S/N # 324858
My Barnett Gamestrike crossbow #324858 discharged unexpectedly. My hands were no where near the trigger but the bow was cocked. The bow released while my fingers were in the way, resulting in very painful injuries to 4 of my fingers (see attached). The same bow released in the same manner 2 years earlier. I sent it back to the manufacturer for repair, which didn’t fix the problem. The first incident did not result in injury.

No one hurt Made Sep 24, 2017, sent to the company Feb 12, 2018, published by CPSC Feb 27, 2018
The product, in the report: similar http://www.fieldandstreamshop.com/p/barnett-headhunter-crossbow-bolts-with-field-points-5-pack-15bttuhdhntr20xbwabw/15bttuhdhntr20xbwabw
Purchased a Barnett Raptor FX3 crossbow which came with two 20in Headhunter carbon bolts (arrows).
Upon attempting to shoot one of the bolts for the very first time, it came apart in the process of leaving or shortly after leaving the bow. The front landed about 30 yrds away and the rear landed about 15yrds away.
The shear was fairly clean near the center of the label, approx 9 inches from the rear of the bolt.
Date on the bolt was 2016 10 10
I used 3 other bolts on the bow without incident, so I know it was not the bow.
I have seen others on the internet report similar things with another “brand” but I wonder if both brands were manufactured in the same factory at the same time.
I suspect that the process of putting on the labels at the factory damaged the bolts creating a weak spot.
Obviously a risk of injury to the shooter and bystanders, or risk of property damage from the separated pieces of the bolt. Furthermore, improper resistance from the bolt could cause damage to the crossbow and/or structural failure, which may then cause injury to the shooter or other bystanders/observers.

Emergency room Made Mar 14, 2017, sent to the company Jun 1, 2017, published by CPSC Jun 15, 2017
The product, in the report: crossbow
The consumer used the crossbow during a hunting excursion. He was looking through the sight getting ready to shoot at a deer when the deer moved and he moved to get a better shot. Immediately after the consumer shot he felt a sharp pain in his right thumb and noticed blood dripping from his hand. The consumer had on nylon gloves and believes the gloves protected his thumb from getting torn off at the knuckle. The consumer was taken to St. Barnabas Community Hospital’s emergency room located at [REDACTED]. The consumer had 8 stitches on his thumb and wore a cast because his thumb was fractured.
Approximately 2 weeks later the consumer contacted the firm and asked if they offered a finger or hand guard for his crossbow but they said they did not offer it. The consumer then advised them of the incident and his injuries. The consumer was told he would receive an email with a shipping return label and he was asked to return the crossbow to the firm for examination. He was also told that the firm’s insurance department would contact him.
The consumer decided he did not want to return the crossbow and retained a lawyer because he found 30 complaints online for a similar injury. The consumer also found recalls for newer models but not his model.
The consumer indicated that sometime in 2015 he contacted the firm to replace the string on the crossbow because it was worn out and they replaced it at a Barnett store in FL.

The product, in the report: Product is a Barnett Quad 400 crossbow.
My father, who is now deceased, purchased a Barnett Quad 400 crossbow on November 10, 2012 at Dunham’s. On September 23, 2014, he took it out to his backyard to shoot at a target. When he pulled the trigger, the crossbow fired and inadvertently contacted his thumb, partially amputating it. The string cut through his flesh and bone, with only a small piece of flesh holding the thumb onto his hand. He was taken to the emergency room, where he waited for a hand surgeon to arrive to perform surgery to reattach his thumb. He was kept overnight, and released the next day on September 24, 2014.

The product, in the report: Barnett “jackal”crossbow.
I purchased a Barnett Jackal cross bow for deer hunting. Due to the way the fire stock is built, the shooters thumb rides above the path of the arrow string. While shooting this bow my thumb was caught by the string and cut my thumb half way off requiring medical attention to sew it back on. I have lost feeling in this thumb. I wanted to report to keep other hunters from experiencing what I have had to go through.

While shooting a Barnett Crossbow (Predator), my thumb was struck with the bow cable causing a severe laceration and broken bone which required me to get 11 stitches, miss 6 weeks of work, physical rehab and it is still and may never be the same. Numbness, tingling and pain persist along with drastically reduced range of motion. All could have been prevented with proper guarding!!!

Emergency room Made Jan 23, 2016, sent to the company Feb 2, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 18, 2016
The product, in the report: Barnett Predator crossbow
I was target shooting my Barnett Predator crossbow using a sawhorse as support. I was sighting through the red dot scope trying to acquire the target while holding the forearm of the crossbow with my left hand. Unable to hold steady, I rotated my left hand clockwise to where I was holding the forearm in my left fingers. As I rotated my left hand, my left thumb rotated up above the string rail and into the path of the string. I was unaware of this as I was still looking through the red dot scope towards the target. When I pulled the trigger, the string struck the back of my thumb. The impact exploded my thumbnail, cut off about 1/2 inch of my left thumb, and shattered the bone in my thumb. The Barnett Predator was purchased in 2011 and has no handguards in place. A proper handguard would have prevented my thumb from getting above the rail and into the path of the string.

Was sighting in a Barnett Predator crossbow, and was a first time user not realizing crossbows should have a thumb guard to prevent injury. The third bolt i shot not really thinking my natural instinct was to grab the bow like a shotgun, i got my right thumb up above the rail and took off the top of my right thumb to the bone severing the extensor tendon and breaking the tip of the thumb. This could and should of been prevented by a thumb guard on the product.

On the 28th day of October 2015 I, [REDACTED], was operating a Barnett Predator Crossbow attempting to sight in the scope that’s included. I had received the crossbow as an early birthday gift a couple of days prior to the incident. The crossbow was new in the unopened box. On the day of the incident after taking 3-4 shots with the crossbow, I decided to take one more shot to test it’s accuracy. Upon taking the shot, as the crossbow has no hand guard, my thumb slipped too high and was severed off by the bow string as it came across during the shot. The injury was severe and painful.

I am the owner of a Barnett Jackal Crossbow. On 11/1/2014 I was target shooting my crossbow and when I shot my thumb was to high and the string of the bow took about 1/2 inch of my thumb nearly off. The emergency room was able to attach.
The reason I am doing this is that I would like Barnett to modify the bow so that this does not happen to others. I was well aware of the danger but just simply made a mistake. With this crossbow it is far to easy to make this mistakes. Barnett is ware and still has not made modifications.

The product, in the report: Barnett Quad 400 crossbow.
On Sept 1 2014, my wife and I were at a friends house for Dinner. My friend had just purchased a new Barnett Quad 400 crossbow and ask if I wanted to shoot it. I had never shot a crossbow before. I shot one arrow without incident. When I shot the first arrow, I was trying to get a feel for the equipment, i.e., was it going to kick, things like that. I nocked another arrow but this time I relaxed more trying to make a good shot. I shoot left handed and as I relaxed my right hand, I apparently raised my thumb on the right hand into the flight path of the string. When I squeezed the trigger the string cut off my right thumb at the nail bed.

On April 9th 2015 I purchased a Barnett Jackal Crossbow serial number 629340 through www.Dickssportinggoods.com. On April 14th 2015 I received the crossbow and assembled it. On April 19th 2015 I went to Bullseye Archery and Sporting at 318 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville, NJ 08721, phone number (732) 998-8795 To have my first Crossbow inspected and to sight it in. [REDACTED] the owner inspected the crossbow and agreed that I had been assembled correctly we proceeded to his archery range were he assisted me in how to properly use and sight the crossbow. after we were done [REDACTED] left me to practice. after approximately 15 to 20 minutes I went to take a shot, after cocking the crossbow and loading the bolt (arrow) I brought the crossbow up to my shoulder to take the shot not realizing my left thumb was over the rail that the sting travels down to push the arrow due to the lack of an adequate finger guard. There is a finger guard, however at its widest it is no wider than a penny maybe 1/2in wide. This crossbow has been replaced with another crossbow where the finger guard is about an inch wide on both sides of the stock. when I took the shot the string sliced into my left thumb about a 1/2inch and nearly to the bone. I immediately informed the owner of Bullseye Archery and sporting who helped me clean and dress the wound and then he advised me to go to the hospital for treatment. I proceeded to Community Medical Center at 99 Rt.37w Toms River NJ 08755, phone number (732)557-8080 were I was treated for a laceration to my left thumb. They glued my finger back together and redressed the injury and I was discharged.

while hunting on my propery I attempted to unload my Barnett Penetrator crossbow. To unload this type of crossbow it is necessary to discharge the bolt (arrow) into the ground or a target. While doing this the unguarded bow string caught my left thumb and severed it.
The thumb was recovered but was unable to be re-attached at the hospital. It required two surgeries to repair the amputation.
I believe Barnett is producing a very dangerous product. After making inquiries I have found that I am not the only owner of a Barnett crossbow that has suffered finger injuries. This crossbow does not come with a finger guard as other brands do. I have been bow hunting for 50 yrs without incident. I feel the public should be made aware of this danger.

I went to my sister-in-law’s cabin on 09/02/2012, Labor Day weekend. Her son, my nephew, [REDACTED] had just purchased a crossbow from Amazon. It was Barnett Jackal Crossbow Package (Quiver , 3 - 20-Inch Arrows and Premium Red Dot Sight). When I shot it I felt a sting in my thumb and blood splattered on me. I looked and it had cut the tip of my thumb off and was only hanging by a piece of skin. I had to go to the Emergency Room on Labor Day weekend and have it sewn back on and have x-rays. I am left-handed and the thumb is numb and it hurts to be bumped. I use it for my living and now cannot feel bolts, screws, etc and in the winter it aches so bad. We contacted Amazon and even after all their reviews under their amazon post about thumbs getting cut they will not pull these or pay for our Emergency Room bill. Here is the website: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004IJ1Q1Q/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M2T1_ST1_dp_1 Here are reviews: 1) By [REDACTED] on July 8, 2011 Verified Purchase Not too hard to assemble, and fires very accurately. Just as a warning, this is not a toy obviously, it fires plenty fast enough to kill or seriously injure somebody. AND MAKE SURE WHILE FIRING YOUR FINGERS ON YOUR HAND OPPOSITE OF YOUR FIRING HAND, YOU KEEP YOUR FINGERS LOW SO THE CABLE DOESN’T HIT OUR FINGERS WHEN IT FIRES. This happened to me last week and i needed my thumb nail removed, stitches and the thumb was fractured. 2) oh my GOD By [REDACTED] on February 14, 2013 Verified Purchase PLEASE KEEP YOUR FINGERS OUT OF THE WAY OF THE STRING WHEN FIRING!!!!! my girlfriends son was out with me when i was TRYING to zero in the scope and i showed him how and made him read the shooting instructions well he just happened to raise his thumb up just a little and the string tore off the skin from the bend in the knuckle to the nail. so please keep your fingers in the recess in the handle he got 9 stiches and a very hard and fast lesson so please be carefull like i told him a few times before turning it over to him THIS IS NOT A TOY!!!!!!

The product, in the report: crossbow
I sustained serious and permanent personal injuries while firing a Buck Commander Crossbow designed and manufactured by Barnett Outdoors, LLC. I sustained significant, painful and permanent injuries as a result of this accident. Of significance, I suffered a commuted intra-articular fracture of the right thumb and laceration which required open reduction and pin fixation. I remain under the care and treatment of my orthopedic surgeon as a result of these injuries.

The product, in the report: Barnett Jackal Crossbow. I did not modify the crossbow from its original factory specs.
I was using a Barnett Jackal Crossbow last year at a friends property in Arkansas. After verifying the crossbow was sighted in, and while using the crossbow as directed, I placed two shots with the crossbow from a controlled rest on the back of my trucks tailgate. I decided to move my target back 15 feet further which put the target at an estimated yardage of 45 feet. From the same rest as before I then placed a third shot with the Jackal Crossbow, suddenly and without warning the string of the crossbow severed 1/2 inches of my left thumb.
I immediately grabbed my thumb and put constant pressure on it to stop the bleeding. My two friends and my fiance gave me emergency medical attention. I almost passed out on their front porch due to shock. They rushed me to the hospital where trauma surgeons from a larger city consulted with my ER doctor. Since the string disintegrated 1/2” of my thumb there was nothing to re attached. The ER gave me a tetanus shot, took ex rays, gave me antibiotics, cleaned my wound, gave me a local anesthetic, dressed my wound and refereed me to a plastic surgeon to reconstruct my thumb.
Barnett’s defective and unreasonably dangerous crossbow continues to be manufactured and marketed by Barnett without a thumb guard, and unless you can get them to change their ways, more and more people like myself will continue to suffer similar injuries. In the first few weeks of my injury my thumb was so painful I vomited because the pain would not stop. One year later I continue have flexibility limitations. I cannot button my top button of my dress shirt because my dexterity is compromised. Periodically I have sharp pains that radiate through thumb. I hope you can make them change their ways so others will not suffer as I have.

No one hurt Made Nov 24, 2011, sent to the company Dec 2, 2011, published by CPSC Dec 16, 2011
The product, in the report: Barnett Ghost 400 crossbow. Black in color, used for hunting. Shoots bolt at 400fps. Package bow and game crusher bolts come with crossbow. These bolts have plastic nocks and break off from the force of crossbow.
Bought a Barnett Ghost 400 Crossbow on third shot out of box string broke bow sounded like it exploded and bolt went two feet. The nock on bolt was broke. This bow shoots 400 fps. I tried to talk to Barnett about problem but they would not respond. After a week returned bow and got my money back. If you get on internet others are having same problem with bow string breaking and arrow problems. I believe this bow was rushed to production and needs to be removed from the market until Barnett can solve string and problems on bow. This bow shoots faster than any bow on the market and this is there selling point. But the bow string and the bolts they supply will not holding up to the power the bow produces. Someone is going to get hurt by this bow.
