No one hurt Made May 11, 2020, sent to the company May 20, 2020, published by CPSC Jun 4, 2020
The product, in the report: Yamaha DR2A17 EF! golf cart
This morning I attempted to back my 2017 Yamaha DR2A17 EF! golf cart out of my garage. I turned on the key, shifted into reverse and pressed on the gas pedal. As the cart attempted to start I heard a loud POP from the engine under the seat. The cart moved backward out of the garage but never really started properly. I then smelled a burning oder coming from the cart. At first I thought it was an electrical issue. I lifted the seat to see if something was melting. I saw smoke coming from the air intake filter. I open the clips and removed the cover. Mores smoke was coming from the air filter. I lifted the filter out of the box and found that it was smoldering. I took it over to an outside faucet and ran water on it to put it out. By the time I got it to the faucet there were actually flames coming from the filter. The foam filter that sits under the main filter had melted in the filter box.
I purchased this vehicle new in 2017 and have not had any problems with it to this point. It has had all regular required service performed by the dealer I purchased it from. I believe that had I not intervened and removed the smoldering filter the entire vehicle would have been consumed by flames.
I have contacted the dealer and they will be looking into repairing the cart. I felt like this is a dangerous situation and needed to be reported and looked into further.
