The product, in the report: Under-sink residential instant hot water dispenser heating tank for drinking water.
Incident and Safety Concern. The Waterstone 7000 Series under sink residential hot water tank leaches synthetic organic chemicals into household drinking water under standard heating operation.
Observed Physiological Reaction and Technical Documentation. Both the initial unit and a factory replacement unit produced persistent plastic chemical odors upon dispensing heated water. Consuming the dispensed water caused acute oral numbness. Licensed master plumbing technician [REDACTED} with [REDACTED] Plumbing officially recorded on diagnostic Invoice [REDACTED] that the insta hot has a strong plastic smell whenever it is dispensed.
Certified Laboratory Findings. State certified testing by [REDACTED] Laboratories verified two key facts. First, clean incoming municipal water with zero detected volatile organic compounds under Report [REDACTED]. Second, Total Organic Carbon spiked to 1.16 mg per L in water dispensed from the heated tank under Report [REDACTED}, which is more than double the state reporting level.
Public Safety Impact. The test results demonstrate that the internal components degrade under normal hot water operating temperatures, leaching organic chemicals into residential drinking water. Despite formal notification, the manufacturer has issued no product recall or safety warning.

What happened: On December 4, 2025, at approximately 1:30 AM, my WaterStone Hot Water Tank 5000 (Serial # B-0FB-18021-3) suffered an electrical failure. The unit began emitting a significant volume of smoke, likely caused by a fried internal wire or component. The smoke was severe enough that we had to shut off the main power to our home and call the fire department. The incident left a lingering smoke odor in the affected area.
Product information: Product: WaterStone Hot Water Tank 5000 Serial Number: B-0FB-18021-3 Distributor: WaterStone Faucets (www.waterstoneco.com) Alleged manufacturer: Waste King (per WaterStone’s claim)
Who was using the product: No one was actively using the product at the time. The unit was installed in our home and operating in its normal standby/ready state during nighttime hours.
How the product was being used: The hot water tank was installed and functioning as intended for normal household hot water use. No unusual demands were being placed on the unit at the time of the incident.
Injuries: No physical injuries occurred. However, the incident caused significant distress to our household, and there was exposure to smoke. The situation posed a serious fire risk to our home and family.
Additional notes: I reported this incident to WaterStone, who claimed they are only the distributor and that Waste King is the original manufacturer. They also cited warranty expiration, which may be irrelevant to product safety. I am concerned this may be a systemic defect that could affect other consumers.
