The product, in the report: Rheem Professional Classic tankless electric water heater, model RTEX-27, 27 kW, 240V/60Hz/single phase, 150 psi maximum operating pressure. Wall-mounted whole-house unit with three copper heating chambers, installed in an attached garage. Dark gray metal case. Label states ETL Listed (Intertek), conforms to UL 499, certified to CSA C22.2 No. 64, and Made in China.
On October 3, 2026, our Rheem RTEX-27 tankless electric water heater (27 kW, 240V, serial number G132306550, date code 202313), installed new about 3 years ago in our attached garage, malfunctioned violently. We first heard a loud bang and ran to investigate. When we opened the door from the house to the garage, there were several explosions with sparks shooting across the garage. My husband had to time his movement and duck under the shooting sparks to reach the electrical panel and shut off the breakers to our water heater. The sparks were traveling at head height, and had he not ducked, they would have hit him in the face. There were 2 inch flames coming out of the top of the unit that self extinguished once the breaker was off, so the fire did not spread beyond the unit.
The unit was being used as the whole-house hot water supply under normal household use by our family. Nothing unusual was being done with it.
No one suffered burns or required emergency treatment, but we breathed smoke from the electrical fire. The garage was filled with thick white smoke that we had to ventilate by opening the large garage door. Someone could easily have been seriously hurt. The explosions were violent. Had we been asleep or away from home, the fire could have spread and the outcome could have been much worse.
After the incident, I took photos of the unit. They show scorching around the electrical terminals, and blue-green corrosion and white mineral deposits on one of the three copper heating chambers beside a small brass fitting. I do not know the cause. We are preserving the failed unit for inspection. The manufacturer has told our plumber the unit is out of warranty and will not be replaced. I have contacted them myself to ask for a safety incident review of this product.

## Incident Description My Rheem Performance Platinum 50-gallon electric water heater, model XE50T12EC55U1, experienced an electrical fire in August 2026.
The fire was concentrated in and around the electronic thermostat/control-panel area on the front of the water heater. The control-panel enclosure and components were severely burned and melted, and there is substantial fire and heat damage extending upward on the exterior of the water heater above the control-panel location.
The water heater was installed on January 17, 2017. I have a photograph documenting the water heater immediately after installation, photographs of the fire damage, and a photograph of the manufacturer’s rating plate showing model XE50T12EC55U1, serial number Q511609822, and manufacture date December 16, 2016.
The electrical breaker supplying the water heater has been turned off, and the water heater is no longer being used.
I am preserving the damaged water heater and its burned electronic control components in their post-fire condition in case CPSC, Rheem, my insurance company, or another investigator wishes to inspect the product and determine the origin and cause of the fire.
I am also bringing CPSC Recall 16-177 to the Commission’s attention because of the similarity in product and location of the fire.
Recall 16-177, announced May 26, 2016, involved Rheem Performance Platinum electric water heaters, including the 50-gallon tall model XE50T12EC55U0. CPSC stated that the control panels on the recalled water heaters could overheat, posing fire and burn hazards. CPSC reported that Rheem had received 296 reports of control panels overheating, including one reported fire resulting in property damage.
I understand that my water heater is model XE50T12EC55U1 and therefore is NOT the XE50T12EC55U0 model specifically identified in Recall 16-177. My unit was manufactured approximately six and one-half months after the recall was announced.
I am not claiming that the defect involved in Recall 16-177 caused this fire. I am reporting the prior recall because my successor-model Performance Platinum water heater experienced a significant fire concentrated in the same general electronic control-panel area identified as the overheating hazard in Recall 16-177.
I would like CPSC to evaluate this incident and determine whether the failed water heater or electronic control assembly should be inspected or retained for further investigation.

Purchased new and installed on 05/04/25. Upon powering unit, arcing occurred near lower thermostat. Discovered power wire inappropriately routed under the edge of a sharp metal retention clip. Wire arced to clip . Uninstalled unit and returned to Home Depot. Exchanged for same model. Installed replacement heater. After power up, breaker tripped after short time. Discovered exact same issue as 1st unit, (wire pinched under sharp edge of metal clip) only this time, it was a wire for the top thermostat. Resulted in melting of insulation and smoke/soot staining in unit. Missing metal of metal clip at site of arcing.

I called Rheem customer service on 1/10/25 at 9AM EST about the control panel beeping. I also spoke to many different customer service reps during the day about the same issue. They all told me the same thing, turn the circuit breaker off and then back on to reset the control panel. They checked to see if the control panel part was available to send me to replace it. It wasnt in stock and they didnt have an ETA for getting them back in stock. They told me to check locally and see if any plumbing supply distributors had them in stock. If so they would reimburse me for the cost. I checked multiple places and nobody had that part in stock or were expecting to get any in. I informed them of this and they told me to return the tank to the place of purchase and they would replace it. I contacted a plumber who arrived shortly after. He checked the water heater and told me they wouldnt sell or install this brand of water heater because of all the problems theyve had with them in the past and the unavailability of replacements parts for them. He ordered a different brand water heater that would arrive on January 14, 2025 and scheduled the installation for January 15, 2025.
At approximately 3:30PM on January 10, 2025, I was sitting in the second floor of my home and noticed a strong, burning plastic smell. I went to the lower level and opened one of the doors at the bottom of the landing. Flames were visible 1 foot above the top of my water heater and smoke was banked down at least 1 foot from the ceiling. I yelled for my wife to bring me an extinguisher. I extinguished the fire and opened the windows and exterior doors. The fire department arrived soon after and mechanically ventilated the entire house and documented the fire. The control panel, part number AP23783 had caught fire internally and burned through the housing. The previous model number sequentially for this brand has been recalled for the same reason that we just experienced.

Recently, my Rheem TEXRE-13 caught on fire. I was lucky to be at home at the time or the whole place would’ve gone up in ashes. I heard an unfamiliar buzzing sound and looked up to see bright flashes of light (sparks) coming from the hotwater heater. Then I saw smoke and more sparks. I immediately jumped up and switched off the breaker and hit it with a fire extinguisher. The plastic on the casing had already started to melt (high combusible material). Sitting below the water heater were also highly combusible items. There was no hot water being used at the time (actually no water at all was being used). The water heater was installed in June/July of 2021 by a profession electrician and my contractor. No hot water (or any water) was being used at the time.

On the morning of March 17th, 2024, we went into our acrid, electric-burning, fume-filled, cloudy garage, attached to our home. I located the source of the smell In the water heater and turned off the power. There was soot and evidence of fire on top of the water heater and a melted area on the electrical connection on the side. This Rheem water heater had been under a CPSC Recall since May 26th, 2016. So, for about eight years we lived with an unsafe control panel causing a constant threat of over-heating and posing a fire and burn hazard. If we hadn’t been home on March 17th and had not turned the heater off, the house might very well have burned down. We discovered this recall on the date of the Incident we Just described. There was no previous alert to us from anyone including the CPSC Recall for this Rheem Performance Platinum Water Heater.

My wife smelled smoke and upon investigation in the basement laundry room found the room filled with smoke. She called 911 and the [REDACTED] VFC responded. She called me also as I was at work, I instructed her to turn off all of the electrical breakers and to get out of the house. The fire department determined that the RHEEM ELECTRIC WATER HEATER lower heating element control shorted out and caught on fire. There were no injuries but the water heater is damaged beyond repair and needed to be replaced. There was no other fire damage only smoke damage.

The control has detected a code A108/lower relay stuck on. Which signals that it is over heating/scalding level. I have contacted the Rheem dealer and they said call a plumber.. the plumber says it’s the control board and it can’t be found for replacement...It is a new model XE50M12EC55U1. DID A SEARCH AND IT SAYS IT HAS A RECALL. Rheem performance Platinum..So far, there are no injuries but the response with contact from Rheem are nonresponsive. My family is using this water heater and are unaware of the dangers.

I keep my electric water heater turned off at the breaker box until I use it. I turned it on today and without any warning the wiring going into the water heater caught fire and burned up the wiring, protective cover, and the basement ceiling. I had to put the wire out with a rag I had to stop it from burning and hurting my hand. The correct breaker did not turn off the power which I done after I got the fire close to being put out. This happen within 10 minutes of turning it on if I were sleeping, or away from home I could have lost my life and home. There was no warning from Home Depot where I purchased it, or on the Rheem website.

On August 18, 2019 my Rheem XE50M12EC55U1 electric water heater purchased in July 2018 at Home Depot tripped the circuit breaker. On inspection, the wires inside had completely melted and caught fire. I have spent the past two weeks trimming and re-connecting the wiring, but after about a week of use the wires melt again. I have a 30 di-pole breaker installed with 10 gauge wire, which should provide enough capacity to power the 5500 amp unit. It is simply unsafe, and it appears Rheem has not corrected the issues that caused the XE50M12EC55U0 recall on May 26, 2016.

Very displeased with rheem warranty experience. My water heater burned up and it was apart of a warrant claim. http://www.rheem.com/recalls I called and was sent an email and opened up original case # [REDACTED] where I sent pictures of my burnt up water heater(which I still have my pictures) which this water heater was 4 years old and apart of a recall. After I sent in the pictures I had talked to a lady in regards to getting the pictures. She mentioned that it was really bad and rheem was going to send me an email so then I can go to Home Depot and find an equivalent water heater at no charge. But when I called in the next day no one had any clue what I was talking about and sent me an email but they started a new case [REDACTED]. Which is really odd they would give me a new case number.. they must have gave me a new case number since they didn’t want help out with a recalled product. The second case number I got the email that mentioned I am now getting a new part instead of getting a new electric water heater.. I have yet to see this supposed part that was issued.. there is no way anyone can go this long without a water heater.. literally 1 1/2 months. I am truly disappointed with the customer service and time it is taking for this to get taken care of. I had to go out an buy a brand new water heater because I couldn’t wait that long for the part to come in and this was issued 4/28... I had to spend over $600 dollars on this new unit as well as a $250 labor charge for them to remove and replace the new unit.. it is pretty sad because when I first sent the picture I was told that because it was burnt up badly that I should be getting an email in regards to an approval to go to Home Depot and find an equivalent one at no charge.. but when I called since I didn’t receive the email on the approval to go to Home Depot to get an equivalent one. I called then a new case easy wrote up and they were supposed to send a part. I am very unhappy with the customer service since pretty much nothing has been done to get this fixed fast enough done this went out 4/23.. and it is now 6/15 and I still have not gotten any response back from rheem. No one ever get rheem product since they are not helpful at all. This needs to get straightened out because there is no help at all because I am out a lot of money to get this taken care of when rheem should have taken care of a majority of the expense... It has been 8 months since this happened but nothing has been done by Rheem

We have a Rheem water heater. Model # XE50T 12EC55U0, Serial # Q251402288. My 7 year old son was taking a shower and could not turn off the water. He said the shower handle was shocking him. I went and checked and it most definantley was charged with electricity. Not long after that the water heater started beeping and has an A104 Error Code displayed. There are no visible leaks on the unit but must have a leak inside the tank allowing it to become electrically charged. So I immediately turned the unit off and our shower is no longer charged. The water heater unit is fairly new.

We had an electrical fire - our Rheem Performance Platinum water heater’s control panel started an electrical fire. I have numerous documents on it - fire department report, photos, etc. if needed. It caused smoke damage and carpet damage to our home. We are out a $2500 home insurance deductible due to the faulty appliance. After the incident I searched online regarding the particular make and model of this water heater and found out there is a recall for this very same reason. We were never notified by the manufacturer of this recall/defect. I had sent in my warranty card the day we had the water heater installed, but still did not receive notification. Notification could have prevent this fire at our house. I have tried contacting Rheem several times and have not received a response.

My wife and I noticed a smell of burning electrical wires and noticed smoke coming from inside the water heater. We turned off the breaker and began looking online for a local Rheem repair company. As i typed Rheem into the search a Rheem page popped up talking about recalling these units because of control panels overheating and in some cases starting fires. Our Rheem Performance Platinum water heater’s control unit unexpectedly an spontaneously caught on fire on Sunday, July 9th 2017 at approximately 12:10AM. Significant damage was done to the control unit and water tank. Our fire alarm went off and we smelled a burning smell. After evacuating the family and pets from the house we called 911 and had the fire department come to the house. While waiting for the fire department I grabbed a fire extinguisher and did a quick look through the house. I discovered open flames coming out of the control unit panel of the hot water heater in our basement and was able to use the fire extinguisher to put out the fire and disconnected the electrical from the home power panel. The fire department arrived, inspected the water heater and surrounding area and confirmed that the fire was a direct cause of the water heater control unit.
After looking online, I discovered that our water heater model has a recall. However, the manufacture date of our specific water heater is outside of the date range of the recall. The recall states that it is for manufacture dates from January 2014 to December 2014 and our water heater was manufactured on March of 2015.
I am writing this to make you aware (and hopefully the rest of the public) that the issue described in the recall notice has happened to my water heater which was manufactured outside of the recall date range.

Once in 2014 and now, two Rheem thermostats failed closed on this water heater keeping the element continuously on creating scalding hot water dramatically overheating the thermostat area. In 2014 it was the lower thermostat and now it was the upper thermostat.
I reported the safety concern about this overheating failure mode to Rheem in writing both in 2014 and now and asked whether the thermostats had been redesigned for a safer failure mode e.g. open circuit. Rheem failed to answer those questions and based on this recent second dangerous failure it’s evident that they have not corrected the safety issue.
I have photos of both failures including the charred heating element head in 2014. This time we detected the scalding hot water and I disconnected the upper element fed by the defective thermostat in time to prevent a possible fire.
Today [REDACTED] from Rheem ([REDACTED]) told me that our 2 closed circuit thermostat failures were rare and usually caused by a electrical surge that welded the contacts closed. I told him that was not the case with us because we have a whole house surge supressor and no other device was ever damaged by any surge.
He said Rheem uses the same bimetallic thermostat design everyone else uses with two exceptions for this plastic tank water heater; 1. They use a brass rod to transfer heat from the water to the thermostat 2. The Marathon thermostats are calibrated differently for the plastic tank

One year after we moved in our Rheem 80 gallon water heater failed. It was replaced under warranty with a RH Q361304515 80 gallon unit. 4 years later we have no hot water (5/27/17). After investigating the circuit breakers and the unit, we found that the control panel had caught fire and almost completely melted. Since it is still under warranty, Rheem is replacing it however, they only make 50 gallon residential units now. They would not upgrade us to a commercial unit which is what we need for our size house. Our options were to install a 50 gallon unit an modify it with a mixing valve or upgrade to the commercial 75 gallon unit with $700 out of pocket expense. Their customer service and warranty center were of no help!!! So frustrating.

Troubleshooting, my husband open the heater panel to push the reset button, but found that there were signs of a fire within the walls. Brand New Rheem Water Heater drawing 9000 watts vs rated 4500 watts. Could have burned my house down. My circuit breaker got hot and tripped. I had a brand new out of the box Rheem electric water heater installed 03/23/2017. Only one heating element is supposed to be energized at a time, drawing 4500 watts. Both heating elements were energized on mine drawing 9000 watts or twice the rated current or load. The problem was a defective upper thermostat, which upon replacement was corrected. This Rheem water heater was very unsafe and NEVER SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE FACTORY in this condition. Rheem must not have tested my unit or otherwise have unsatisfactory quality controls

I have a RHEEM 80 gallon water heater not included in the current recall. It began to malfunction, heating water poorly. I opened the cover over the lower heating element and found an actual smoldering fire with sparking and arcing. Upon examination, the thermal insulation material under the cover was burned as well as the hard clear plastic cover over the terminal connection and the insulation over the wiring to the lower element. The product, in the report: Rheem Performance Platinum Water Heater
A breaker in my house blew out. When we reset the breaker, there was a loud boom and a flash of light at the water heater in the garage next to the electric panel. One light and a tv blew out. We opened the slated door where the water heater is and there was smoke rising from the top of the water heater. There was an acrid smell like burning rubber and there was a char mark on the walls behind and above the water heater.

I had A Rheem platnuim 40 gallon electric hot water heater installed in may of 2014. On April29 2016 I got a call from my tenant that the fire dept responded to smoke in the basement it turned out to be a faulty digital control display panel. that had caught fire. It was purchased from home depot.I see thyat this is not the only one to do so.

Rheem Platinum Performance electric water heater was installed on May 4, 2014. On April 17, 2015 I walked into my garage to find it full of smoke from an electrical fire. The control panel was burned through and the element wiring was burnt, along with the internal components of the top heating element.

The product, in the report: 80 gallon water heater with electric and solar heaters
The consumer says the pressure vessel failed causing a leak around the top. He says that it caused the unit to short out,and start a fire in the tank insulation.
The consumer says that the circuit breaker shorted out by itself. The consumer says the pressure vessel of a water heater should never fail. He had his first water heater for 22 years with no issues.
He wrote a letter to the manufacturer via regular mail over a week ago and is awaiting a response. He says one whole side of the heater was blackened. His plumbing contractor took it away and replaced it.

The product, in the report: Rheem Marathon 85 Gallon Electric Water Heater
I recently purchased a Rheem 85 gallon Marathon Water Heater. The thermostats from the factory were defective and had to be replaced because the thermostats when set at 120 degrees would run as high as 135 degrees which caused a burn to my 2 year old. I ahve been four thermostats from the factory and everyone has been defective. The heater will still run in the 135 degree range unless the top thermostat is shut off.
