    RE: DEFECTIVE WATER HEATER.

ON MARCH 2, 2012 WE PURCHASED A RELIANCE 30-GALLON WATER HEATER MODEL NO. 630DORT, SERIAL NO. 1142JOOl792 AT JERRY’S SPRINGFIELD STORE. THE WATER HEATER WAS INSTALLED ON MARCH 3, 2012. AT THE FINISH OF THE INSTALLATION I [REDACTED] DISCOVERED THERE WAS NO GROUND CONNECTION HOLE OR SCREW IN THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION AREA (SEE ENCLOSED PHOTOS). I TEMPORARILY ATTACHED THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTION GROUND WIRE TO ONE OF THE ELECTRIC COVER PLATE SCREWS.

I [REDACTED] CALLED RELIANCE’S TOLL FREE NUMBER DURING THE FOLLOWING WEEK AND THEY WERE TOTALLY UNHELPFUL. I WAS ADVISED TO RETURN THE PRODUCT TO THE PLACE OF PURCHASE (COSTLY AND TIME CONSUMING). WHEN I TRIED TO POINT OUT THE POTENTIAL DANGERS I WAS SUBJECTED TO A “CANNED SPIEL” THAT BASICALLY SAID WE DON’T CARE. RELIANCE WAS NOT EVEN INTERESTED IN TAKING ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THIS DEFECT.

I [REDACTED] CONTACTED JERRY’S AND THEY WERE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS MATTER, GOING SO FAR AS TO CHECK THEIR EXISTING STOCK FOR GROUND CONNECTIONS. JERRY’S FURNISHED US A SELF-TAPPING SCREW TO PROPERLY CONNECT THE GROUND WIRE, WHICH WE INSTALLED.

OUR MAJOR CONCERN IS THAT MOST WATER HEATERS ARE INSTALLED BY HOME OWNERS WHO MIGHT NOT NOTICE THE MISSING GROUND CONNECTION. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS SHOULD BE A MAJOR CONCERN TO RELIANCE BECAUSE ALL WATER HEATERS ARE INSTALLED WHERE PLUMBING LEAKS TYPICALLY OCCUR. THIS COULD LEAD TO A POTENTIAL SHOCK OR EVEN DEATH.
