The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Jul 15, 2011, published by CPSC Aug 8, 2011

The product, in the report: 50 gal electric hot water heater

Removing cover over hot water heater to find thermostat. To remove bottom cover (metal plate) you must lift up and out to release cover from latch. The cover came into contact with electrical connection, which causes small explosive short, and caused insulation inside of panel to catch on fire. It is almost impossible to remove this cover without coming into contact with electrical connection. The foam inside the panel is extremely flammable and not self-extinguishing. I had to blow out the flames after approximately 10 seconds. Instruction booklet provided with water heater is not model specific and indicates three different options for where the thermostat could be. Thermostat cover should be marked. Electrical connection should be insulated against metal cover in case breaker is not turned off completely as in my case. Foam should be non-flammable. This presents a serious shock and fire hazard to home owners.
